Albany International completes acquisition of Heimbach Group

Albany International Corp. announced it has completed its acquisition of Heimbach Group (Heimbach). Headquartered in Düren, Germany, Heimbach is a global supplier of paper machine clothing for the production of all grades of paper and cardboard on all machine types as well as high-tech textile products used in a variety of sectors, such as the food processing, chemicals, construction materials and automotive industries.

Daniel Halftermeyer, President of Machine Clothing, said, “We are excited about the opportunities to create additional value for our shareholders and customers through the increased scale, complementary technologies and broader geographic footprint this transaction provides. Together we will effectively combine the strengths of each company to set a new standard in customer value delivery as the industry’s partner-of-choice.”

Paper Excellence Crofton mill extends shutdown

Members of Unifor Local 1132 at the Crofton mill in British Columbia, Canada, received notice that the scheduled restart of the mill, slated for the end of the month, has been delayed by at least another 30 days, leaving workers and their families in the lurch.

The company advised members that the current plan is to restart production at the kraft mill and the paper mill at the end of September, contingent on the ‘recovery of market prices for its paper products’ – a target that was not clearly defined. This is the third time Paper Excellence has announced a shutdown extension since May 2023, when a 30-day curtailment was planned.

ANDRITZ to Deliver and Install New Shoe Press at Lee & Man Paper Mill in Malaysia

ANDRITZ has received the ninth order for a PrimePress X shoe press from Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Ltd.

According to ANDRITZ, the new shoe press will help the paper producer save energy and further improve paper quality at its Best Eternity Recycle Technology mill in Banting, Malaysia.

The newly ordered shoe press will be installed in PM26, a containerboard machine that runs at a design speed of 1,000 m/min and produces high-quality Testliner of 70 – 160 gsm basis weight.

The PrimePress X shoe press will replace the existing conventional third nip in the center roll-based concept.

Valmet to Supply Key Pulp and Paper Technologies to Naini Papers in India

Valmet will deliver key technologies, automation and services to Naini Papers’ cooking and fiberline rebuild and new specialty paper machine PM 3 at their mill in Kashipur, India. The delivery will increase the mill’s capacity and support meeting the market demand of specialty coated paper.

The delivery is scheduled for the first quarter 2025.

The value of the order will not be disclosed, but a delivery of this size and scope is typically valued between EUR 40 and 60 million, Valmet said.

Average Recycled Content of Canadian-Made Paper Packaging Is More Than 80%

The latest research results from the Paper and Paperboard Packaging Environmental Council (PPEC) show the success of the paper packaging circular economy and continue to confirm that the feedstock used for the production of boxboard and containerboard in Canada is made of primarily recycled content fibres.

The latest report represents the results of the 17th biennial Recycled Content survey, which is conducted to determine the average recycled content contained in the major paper packaging grades made by Canadian mills.

The 2022 results show that the average recycled content of domestic shipments for the top two major packaging grades was 80.2%. The average recycled content for domestic shipments of boxboard was 86.2%, while the average recycled content for domestic shipments of containerboard was 81%.

Sappi Saiccor signs long-term service agreement with Andritz

Dissolving pulp producer Sappi Saiccor signed a three-year service contract with technology group Andritz for two recovery boilers operating at the mill in Umkomaas, South Africa.

The two Andritz boilers producing 230 tph of steam at 490°C and 86 bar have been operating since 2008 and 2021 respectively. The service agreement will help the Saiccor mill maintain safe and efficient operation while improving the reliability and availability of the boilers.

The scope includes operation support, engineering support, pre-shutdown services and annual shutdown services such as mechanical and process inspection, as well as an advisory service for boiler washing and boiler repair and replacement works.

Saiccor mill, situated 50 km south of the port of Durban, produces elemental chlorine free (ECF) dissolving pulp (DP), mostly for the export market. It is one of the production facilities of Sappi group, a leading global provider of everyday materials made from wood fiber-based renewable resources.

Greif buys 51% stake in paper partitions supplier ColePak, LLC

Greif, Inc. has acquired 51% of the ownership interest in ColePak, LLC in an all-cash transaction funded through Greif’s existing credit facility.

ColePak is the second largest supplier of paper partitions in North America and has a compelling future growth path in that unique product niche. As partners, ColePak adds a completely new product offering to the Greif paper converting portfolio, which provides integration to the Greif mill system in both containerboard and URB grades. Additionally, the ColePak margin profile is immediately accretive to the Greif portfolio.

The ColePak financial results will be reported within the Greif Paper Packaging & Services segment as part of its Q4 2023 results.

Greif is a global leader in industrial packaging products and services.

SCA becomes wholly owner of Gällö Timber AB

SCA and Persson Invest began their collaboration around Gällö Timber and the sawmill in Gällö, Jämtland in 2010. Since 2010, significant investments have been made in the sawmill to develop its operations and strengthen its competitiveness. Today, the sawmill has 115 employees and a capacity of 370,000 cubic meters of sawn timber.

SCA is Europe’s largest private forest owner with 2.7 million hectares and, with its forest holdings at its core, has developed a well-invested industrial operation with sawmills, pulp mills, and manufacturing of packaging paper. By acquiring Persson Invest’s share in Gällö Timber, SCA strengthens its position as one of Sweden’s leading producers of sawn timber.

Metsä Group to draw up biodiversity plans for its mill areas – Kemi the first in line

Metsä Group plans to boost biodiversity on its land areas in Kemi. Covering more than 650 hectares, the designated site encompasses Metsä Group’s mill area and other areas in the Kemi urban environment. Metsä Group’s operations in Kemi include a bioproduct mill, currently under construction, and a paperboard mill. The company aims to increase regional biodiversity at all its mill locations across Europe, which number more than 20.

The goal is to modify land use on the Metsä Group Kemi site to improve the state of nature in the industrial environment. The special features of local nature will be taken into account in the project, and the living conditions of endangered species will be improved. Biodiversity in the area will be increased experimentally and by adopting new operating methods.

April Group invests in paperboard packaging mill in Indonesia

Leading sustainable fibre and product producer Asia Pacific Resources International Limited has strengthened its commitment to supporting the growth of the green economy in Indonesia. The company is set to expand its product portfolio in the downstream sector by investing IDR33.4 trillion in a sustainable paperboard production facility.

 

The construction of the new facility – which will be located at APRIL’s operations in Pangkalan Kerinci, in Riau province, Sumatra – is one of the largest manufacturing investments in Sumatra in the last decade. The investment is expected to support Indonesia’s continued economic development and recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic through the diversification of sustainable downstream fibre products with added value.

Nordic Paper decides on strategic investments for Bäckhammar

The Board of Directors of Nordic Paper has today decided to invest approximately SEK 850 m at the Bäckhammar mill. The investment will further improve sustainability performance and strengthen the competitiveness of the plant. An important component of the investment is a new wood room providing for both strategic flexibility in raw material sourcing and efficiency gains in the production. The emissions of dust to air will be reduced by more than two thirds through an installation of a new electrostatic filter. The investments are expected to add about SEK 100 m annually to Nordic Paper EBITDA. Further, the investments set the foundation for future growth in production output.

 

The investments of today’s decision are approved under the current, existing, production permit. A new production permit was granted for the Bäckhammar mill on 31 January 2023. The new production permit was appealed by a third party and has as of today not gained legal force.

Velvet Care to halve tissue factory’s carbon footprint with PLN 63 million heat and power plant

Velvet CARE, the consumer tissue producer owned by ESG transformation specialist private equity fund Abris Capital Partners, will slash its CO2 emissions by 46% with an investment of PLN 63 million ($15 million) in a gas-fired combined heat and power plant (CHP).

Central Europe’s fastest-growing consumer tissue maker will build the cogeneration unit at its flagship factory in Klucze, southern Poland. The investment will save 69,000 tonnes of annual CO2 emissions, compared with 151,000 tonnes in Scope 1 + 2 emissions in 2022. That figure includes both direct emissions and indirect emissions related to purchased energy.

Nippon Paper Industries started cooperative marine transport between the capital region and the Kansai area, Japan, in cooperation with Daio Paper Corporation.

Nippon Paper Industries has provided long distance truck transport to supply the business communication paper produced at the Nakoso Mill to the Kansai region.

Daio Paper uses the RORO ships of Daio Kaiun Co., Ltd. to transport the paper and board products produced at its Mishima Mill from Mishima-Kawanoe Port (via Sakai Senboku Port to Chiba Chuo Port) to supply the products to the capital region and the Tohoku region.

Valmet to Deliver Seventh Tissue Production Line to Papel San Francisco in Mexico

Valmet will supply an Advantage DCT 100TS tissue production line to Papel San Francisco in Mexico. The new TM 10 machine will be installed at the company’s mill in Mexicali and the start-up is planned for the second quarter 2025.

Valmet’s scope of delivery will comprise an Advantage DCT 100TS tissue machine. The machine will be equipped with an OptiFlo headbox and cast alloy Yankee cylinder. The machine will also feature Valmet’s Advantage tissue technology including a ViscoNip press, an AirCap hood and the WetDust dust system.

Start-up and commissioning are included in the delivery.

Mercer International Inaugurates New Lignin Center at Rosenthal Pulp Mill in Germany

Mercer International  inaugurated the Mercer Lignin Center, which is located on the site of Mercer’s Rosenthal pulp mill in Germany.

“Our focus is on the full utilization of wood resources,” said Juan Carlos Bueno, CEO of Mercer International. “It is therefore only logical to exploit the often untapped potential of lignin.”

Mercer Rosenthal produces kraft pulp and has an annual production capacity is 360,000 ADMTs. In addition, the mill operates the largest solid biomass-based power plant in Thuringia (a state of central Germany), with a thermal capacity of more than 400 megawatts and an electrical capacity of 57 megawatts. An important biobased by-product of mill’s pulp production is tall oil, which replaces fossil products in the chemical industry. Lignin joins the mill’s existing portfolio of bioproducts.

UPM announced the appointment of Aki Temmes as Executive Vice President responsible for UPM Fibres Business Area, effective December 1, 2023. He will report to Jussi Pesonen, President and CEO, and be based in Helsinki, Finland.

Temmes is currently Senior Vice President, Business Control and Finance Operations. Prior to that he was responsible for UPM’s Timber business and UPM Fibres Business Area Business Control.

Temmes joined UPM in 2003 and has held multiple roles in number of business finance positions in Finland and France. He holds a master’s degree in accounting and finance?and an Executive MBA. He is a Finnish citizen.

More than 70 organisations along the entire value chain – from producers, brand owners and retailers to recycling and waste management companies, including big supermarket groups like Aldi, Coop, Denner, Lidl and Migros – have signed on to the initiative.
