Feb. 19, 2024 – Valmet’s Board of Directors has appointed Thomas Hinnerskov President and CEO of Valmet. He will start in the position during the second half of 2024 — by the end of September at the latest.

Valmet and Saipem signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop integrated solutions to support decarbonization

Valmet and Saipem have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop joint solutions to decarbonize the industrial sectors that face significant challenges in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, also known as hard-to-abate industries.

The companies will collaborate to offer effective solutions combining Saipem’s technologies for CO2 management with the heat recovery and flue gas treatment units engineered and produced by Valmet for the pulp, paper and energy segments, thus bringing integrated and flexible options to their customers in both existing and new facilities.

Both Saipem and Valmet are committed to supporting customers along their Net Zero journey and ensure effective end-to-end CO2 management for emission-intensive industries.

Valmet to Acquire Brazilian Wood Handling Equipment Company, Demuth

Valmet on December 21 entered into an agreement to acquire Demuth, a Brazilian company specializing in wood handling solutions for the pulp industry. This acquisition will strengthen Valmet’s wood handling technology offering and services presence in South America.

The value of the acquisition will not be disclosed.

The acquisition is subject to relevant competition authority approvals and is estimated to be completed during the second or third quarter of 2024.

Demuth is a family-owned company established in 1981. The company operates two manufacturing facilities in southern Brazil in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The net sales of Demuth is around EUR 20-30 million annually and the company employs around 300-400 people.

Valmet has been included in the DJSI World and Europe indices for the tenth consecutive year

Valmet has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for the tenth consecutive year. The company was listed both in the Dow Jones Sustainability World and Europe indices.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index evaluates companies’ ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) performance and the capability to continuously improve. Valmet scored high especially in innovation management as well as resource efficiency, circularity, emissions and water reporting.

Valmet invests in roll cover production in the Columbus service center in the United States

Valmet is investing in state-of-the-art process equipment at its roll service center in Columbus, Mississippi, United States to broaden the scope of process covers being manufactured.

The value of the new investment will not be disclosed. Main equipment installations and commissioning took place during the third quarter 2023 and the new process is currently fully operational.

“This strategic investment shows our commitment to enhance our rubber, composite and polyurethane manufacturing capabilities and strengthens Valmet’s position as an industry leader for roll covers. It also responds to the growing demand for roll services that we have seen with the investments our customers continue to make in North America. Being close to our customers is one of our core commitments,” says Jonathan Demers, Director, Roll Services, North America, Valmet.

Valmet to supply automation and quality control systems to Union Paper Mills in Dubai

Valmet will supply Valmet DNA Distributed Control System (DCS) and Valmet IQ Quality Control System (QCS) with the latest web-based Valmet DNA User Interface to Union Paper Mills’ paper machine PM 2 in its Dubai facility, in the United Arab Emirates.

Union Paper Mills selected Valmet’s automation systems based on a successful previous project conducted in 2017 for the automation of paper machine PM 3 in its Al Dhafra facility in Abu Dhabi. The new systems will replace the existing DCS and QCS from another supplier and enable the mill to improve the operating efficiency and optimize the end-product quality with the latest automation technology.

The order was included in Valmet’s orders received of the third quarter 2023. The delivery and start-up will take place in 2024. The value of the order is not disclosed.

DS Smith announces a €90m investment at Rouen paper mill.

DS Smith, a world leader in sustainable packaging solutions, recently unveiled a major investment to transform the paper mill’s energy supply at its site in Normandy, near Rouen. The project includes replacing the coal-fired boiler with a new biomass boiler that will reduce the site’s emissions by 99,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

 

The 56 MW Valmet high-tech boiler will supply at least 80% of the site’s heat demand and will be fully operational by the first quarter of 2025. It will be fuelled by 94,000 tonnes of biofuel, 30% of which will come from plant by-products (pulper waste) and 70% from waste wood sources such as furniture and demolition waste.

Engie Solutions will operate the boiler, which will allow for the possibility for the future installation of a steam turbine capable of producing around 10 MW of electricity with a maximum steam supply of 65 t/h.

Metsä Group and Quant Finland agree on a common goal to reduce fossil oil consumption

Metsä Group and industrial maintenance service provider Quant Finland have agreed to halve the consumption of fossil hydraulic oil together in Metsä Group’s plywood and Kerto LVL mills by 2027 compared to 2022.

Quant is Metsä Group’s maintenance service partner at its Kerto LVL and plywood mills located in Lohja, Punkaharju, Suolahti, Äänekoski and Pärnu. Hydraulic oil is widely used in production machinery and equipment. Oil consumption can be reduced through close monitoring, systematic maintenance and investments.

Large industrial players have significant potential to reduce the environmental impact of the forest industry when working together.

Metsä Group and Valmet to develop a joint sustainability model for industrial investment projects

Metsä Group and Valmet are jointly developing a comprehensive operating model to ensure sustainability in technology and maintenance investments. The model will address various aspects of sustainability related to the environment, social responsibility and governance (ESG). It will be used to verify the sustainability of the process technology projects delivered by Valmet to Metsä Group and the related supply chains. Metsä Group and Valmet have set up a joint working group to develop and deploy the sustainability model. The goal is to adopt the model by 2027.

Valmet is a large technology and service provider in the forest industry’s value chain, and its operations and procurement cover an extensive geographical area. Valmet has received a major order of multiple technologies from Liansheng Pulp & Paper in China

Valmet has received a major order from Liansheng Pulp & Paper (Zhangzhou) in Fujian Province in China covering multiple technology deliveries for the customer’s Zhangpu site. Valmet will supply a coated board making line (BM 2) with related automation systems, bleached chemi-thermo mechanical pulp (BCTMP) technology and two small size tissue machines (TM 5 and TM 6). In addition, Valmet will supply four tissue machine headboxes for tissue machines TM 7, TM 8, TM 9 and TM 10 at the same site.

The order of the coated board making line, BCTMP technology, two tissue machines and four tissue machine headboxes were included in Valmet’s orders received of the third quarter 2023. The value of the order will not be disclosed.

The start-up of the coated board machine and BCTMP technology are scheduled for the third quarter of 2025, the tissue machines for the fourth quarter of 2024, and tissue machine headboxes for the third quarter of 2024.

Valmet has signed a EUR 175 million loan with EIB

Valmet has signed a EUR 175 million loan agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB). The loan will support Valmet’s Research and Development (R&D) activities to help finance technologies that replace fossil fuels with renewables. The loan agreement is linked to company’s R&D activities in 2023-2026.

The financing aims to enhance the resource and energy efficiency as well as the performance of Valmet’s technology, promote the use of recyclable raw materials and to improve the sustainability of Valmet’s operations. The financing is part of the EIB’s dedicated package of support to REPowerEU – the EU plan to eliminate dependence on fossil fuel imports.

Valmet to Supply a Fine Paper Making Line to Yueyang Forest Paper in China

Valmet will supply a high-capacity fine paper making line with automation, spare parts and consumables packages to Yueyang Forest Paper in China. The delivery is scheduled for the third quarter 2024.

The value of the order will not be disclosed.

The paper machine, with a 11,150 mm wide fabric, will produce woodfree uncoated, offset, and copy paper grades with the basis weight range of 50-120 g/m2. The design speed of the machine will be 1,800 m/min.

“Valmet has been in China for 90 years, witnessed the rapid and healthy development of China’s pulp and paper industry and participated in it. Therefore, we have a strong connection with Yueyang Forest Paper,” said Xiangdong Zhu, Area President, China, Valmet.

The ranking was published in Universum’s annual survey, which is the biggest employer attractiveness survey in Finland. Pixelle Invests $1.4 Million in Safety at Spring Grove Mill with Industry First Robotics

Pixelle Specialty Solutions said that it has improved safety and productivity at its specialty paper mill in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania, by installing a smelt spout robot manufactured by Valmet. The smelt robot is essential for keeping recovery boiler spouts open and improving efficiencies in the liquor recovery cycle.

The first smelt robot installation of its kind in North America, the robot regularly cleans the recovery boiler smelt spouts ensuring stable smelt flow, optimum cleaning and safer boiler operation, without manual intervention.

Valmet to deliver an electrostatic precipitator to Shandong Huatai Paper in China

Valmet is set to supply an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) for Shandong Huatai Paper’s ambitious 700,000-tonne chemical pulp project in Shandong province, China. The ESP delivery is scheduled for January 2025 and is part of Valmet’s order portfolio for the third quarter of 2023, with the order’s value remaining confidential.

Valmet to Supply Key Pulp and Paper Technologies to Naini Papers in India

Valmet will deliver key technologies, automation and services to Naini Papers’ cooking and fiberline rebuild and new specialty paper machine PM 3 at their mill in Kashipur, India. The delivery will increase the mill’s capacity and support meeting the market demand of specialty coated paper.

The delivery is scheduled for the first quarter 2025.

The value of the order will not be disclosed, but a delivery of this size and scope is typically valued between EUR 40 and 60 million, Valmet said.

Valmet to Deliver Seventh Tissue Production Line to Papel San Francisco in Mexico

Valmet will supply an Advantage DCT 100TS tissue production line to Papel San Francisco in Mexico. The new TM 10 machine will be installed at the company’s mill in Mexicali and the start-up is planned for the second quarter 2025.

Valmet’s scope of delivery will comprise an Advantage DCT 100TS tissue machine. The machine will be equipped with an OptiFlo headbox and cast alloy Yankee cylinder. The machine will also feature Valmet’s Advantage tissue technology including a ViscoNip press, an AirCap hood and the WetDust dust system.

Start-up and commissioning are included in the delivery.

Valmet to deliver mill-wide optimization to Mercer Rosenthal in Germany

Valmet has secured a contract to provide Mercer Rosenthal, a kraft pulp mill in Germany, with a Mill-Wide Optimization solution. This comprehensive solution involves a mill-wide production planning application, as well as change management services, designed to streamline decision-making and enhance production optimization across the fiber line, recovery line, and pulp dryer. Notably, the package includes a two-year performance agreement for ongoing remote support via the Valmet Performance Center, ensuring sustained results over the long term.
