In an effort to address ongoing cost inflation Sappi Europe will increase prices for its Fine Paper grades by 7-10% from January 2024. This increase is necessary to maintain viability of Sappi’s business, the actual amount will depend on the product and market circumstances.

Due to uncompetitive wood prices from the Polish State Forests’ monopoly and low market demand across paper and board products, the company decided to significantly reduce the planned multiannual strategic investment project at MM Kwidzyn relating to energy, further pulp integration and the product range, which was announced end of April 2023. Instead, MM Kwidzyn will focus its investments on increasing its already high share of renewable energy of currently 69 % even further.
In addition, the company has entered in consultations with trade unions and work council on a potential closure of the small packaging kraft paper machine (PM 3) and a reorganisation, which may include collective dismissal of around 110 employees.
MM Kwidzyn will continue with unchanged production of pulp and virgin fibre-based cartonboard. Regarding the paper production, paper machines PM 1 and PM 2 will continue to produce up to 360 kt/year uncoated fine paper and 40-80 kt/year “IPACKTM Strong Pro” (packaging kraft paper). Since the rebuild of one of the uncoated fine paper machines has been put on hold, sack kraft paper will not be produced in Kwidzyn.
MM Kwidzyn is a leading cartonboard, paper and pulp producer in Poland. Since mid-2021 it has been owned by Austrian MM Group and is one of six European mills of MM Board & Paper. It produces virgin fibre-based cartonboard, uncoated fine paper, packaging kraft paper and pulp. The Company is selling a large share domestically and exporting its products mainly in the EU.
Valmet has received a major order from Liansheng Pulp & Paper (Zhangzhou) in Fujian Province in China covering multiple technology deliveries for the customer’s Zhangpu site. Valmet will supply a coated board making line (BM 2) with related automation systems, bleached chemi-thermo mechanical pulp (BCTMP) technology and two small size tissue machines (TM 5 and TM 6). In addition, Valmet will supply four tissue machine headboxes for tissue machines TM 7, TM 8, TM 9 and TM 10 at the same site.
The order of the coated board making line, BCTMP technology, two tissue machines and four tissue machine headboxes were included in Valmet’s orders received of the third quarter 2023. The value of the order will not be disclosed.
The start-up of the coated board machine and BCTMP technology are scheduled for the third quarter of 2025, the tissue machines for the fourth quarter of 2024, and tissue machine headboxes for the third quarter of 2024.
As Asia Symbol Group, one of the biggest wood pulp producers in China, expands its pulp and paper business into tissue manufacturing, it has selected long-term strategic partner ABB to deliver the ABB Ability™ Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and system integration at three of its tissue mills in China.
This latest contract for mills in Guangdong, Shandong and Jiangxi affirms the strong, long-standing relationship between ABB and Asia Symbol, part of the global RGE Group (Royal Golden Eagle).
In recent years, this has seen the provision of paper machine drives and quality control system (QCS) products, and the successful extension of ABB’s MES service to Asia Symbol’s three fine paper production lines in Guangdong.

Andritz will relocate and upgrade a fiberline for Yueyang Forest & Paper to produce premium quality fibers for its new paper machine. The P-RC APMP (Pre-Conditioning Refiner Chemical Alkaline Peroxide Mechanical Pulp) line was originally supplied by Andritz in 2011 to the mill in Yuanjiang city, Hunan province. Andritz will now transfer it to Yueyang city, Hunan province, where it will process mixed hardwood for the production of printing and writing papers.
By adding new high-efficiency equipment and refurbishing existing machines, the upgrade will raise the line’s minimum design capacity to 650 admt/d and improve fiber quality while saving energy and chemicals. Start-up is scheduled for the second half of 2024.
