The ecological transformation project of the Grand-Couronne paper manufacturing site in France, formerly Chapelle-Darblay, has reached a new stage in its implementation with the takeover of the operational management of the site by Fiber Excellence.
Veolia, a major partner in the project, is committed to ensuring the supply of recycled paper and cardboard for the stationery industry, in a dynamic local and circular economy.
Since acquiring the site from the Rouen Normandy Metropolis in May 2022, Veolia has been keen to take over to make possible the project to strategically reposition the newsprint factory into a cardboard production site.
Kyoto Group announces that it has signed a term sheet for delivering a Heatcube to one of Germany’s major paper and packaging manufacturers—Klingele. The designated site for installing a first Heatcube is at Klingele’s facility in Werne, a corrugated board plant in Germany.
Klingele Paper and Packaging Group, a global manufacturer with 13 corrugated board plants worldwide, 8 processing plants and 3 paper mills, aims to achieve a reduction of CO2 emissions by the year 2030. At the plant in Werne a reduction of 55% of CO2 emissions is planned by 2030. This goal will be accomplished through the utilization of off-grid wind and solar energy, coupled with the replacement of the existing gas boilers for steam production. To address the intermittent nature of renewables, Klingele plans to install Kyoto Group’s molten salt thermal energy storage solution, Heatcube. This innovative system will capture electricity when available and supply steam as needed. The recently announced AI-powered back end of Heatcube will also ensure state-of-the-art preventive and predictive maintenance for Klingele.

Toscotec will supply an entire dryer section rebuild to Hamburger Turkey, part of the Hamburger Containerboard Group, at their paper mill in Çorlu in Northern Turkey. The project focuses on their containerboard machine (PM3) and is planned for the end of 2024.
The rebuild has two main targets. Firstly, the replacement of the existing cast-iron dryer cans with Toscotec’s custom-sized TT SteelDryers will increase the sheet drying width by 90 mm while maintaining the same face length and using the existing machine frame. This will lead to an increase of PM3’s production capacity.
The second target is to expand the basis weight range and produce lower grammages to enter a new market for lighter testliner products through an improvement in the wet section.
Andritz has received an order from Papel Prensa S.A. to supply a complete old corrugated containers (OCC) line including a reject handling system to its mill in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In its initial production phase, the new line will process 180 t/d of local OCC. The line’s processing capacity can be easily increased through a minor adjustment to configuration to support the expected rise in pulp demand for the production of corrugated paper. The new line will provide high pulp quality at cost-efficient and resource-saving operation, with the latest technology available.
Diego Colabardini, CEO of Papel Prensa S.A., says: “Our goal is to produce top-quality paper while reducing our environmental footprint through the efficient use of energy and natural resources, based on our strategy of promoting circular economy in a sustainable business. ANDRITZ’s advanced technology and extensive experience in pulping will help us achieve this goal.”
ANDRITZ’s scope of supply comprises
Start-up of the new line is scheduled for 2024.

Moelven Wood and Billerud are joining forces to examine the possibility of developing a new sustainable packaging solution for Moelven’s interior panels. The goal is to create a paper-based solution to replace the current plastic shrink wrap. The collaboration stems from an innovation competition organized by Paper Province.
In September, 19 companies submitted 22 solution proposals to Moelven Wood’s packaging challenge — to find a more sustainable packaging for their wooden interior panels.
Out of these, Ahlstrom, Billerud, Boxon, Lignin Industries, and T-Emballage were selected to work on the challenge during Moelven Hackathon. The innovation competition was arranged by the forestry bioeconomy cluster Paper Province and held in Karlstad, Sweden, on December 11 and 12.
During the competition, the companies fine-tuned their solutions with support from mentors in business and product development, communication, value proposition, and materials. At the final, the companies pitched their proposals to Moelven’s jury who announced Billerud and their fiber-based packaging solution as the winner.

ProJet b.v. received an order from Grünewald Papier for 1 ProCleaner for the Forming Wire of their PM1 Paper Machine. The value of this order will not be disclosed. The ProCleaners is scheduled to be delivered in Q1, 2024 with commissioning later in 2024.
The ProJet b.v. cleaning head is equipped with ProMax chemical spraying capability to enhance cleaning efficiency even further. ProMax can be added continuously or intermittently for the Forming Fabrics. The ProJet b.v. are furthermore equipped with PLUS-mode, which guarantees highest possible cleaning capacity if and when required. Contact Claus Robberts or Max Robberts to learn more details about ProMax and PLUS-mode.
Grünewald justifies the investment based on improvement in sheet quality and reduction in water consumption: the ProCleaner use a single traversing head that cover the wires as fast as the existing conventional oscillating showers. The conventional HP Showers can be eliminated completely. Users of the ProCleaner achieve substantial water savings because the ProJet Cleaner uses only 1.3gpm (5.0 ltr/min) of water; a conventional shower consumes over 40gpm (100ltr/min)
ProCleaners for the Wire Section will provide the following enormous benefits:
– Water savings of up to 95%
– Electrical power savings up to 90%
– Improved dewatering capacity of the Wires
– Reduced number of sheet breaks, improved sheet quality
Nordic Paper, a leading specialty paper producer with its base in Scandinavia, has selected AFRY as its engineering and project management partner for the strategic investment projects at its Bäckhammar mill in Sweden. The projects include a new wood room and a new electrostatic filter.
Nordic Paper has decided to invest approximately MSEK 850 to enhance the sustainability performance and competitiveness of the Bäckhammar mill, which produces kraft paper for various applications. An important component of the investment is a new wood room providing for both strategic flexibility in raw material sourcing and efficiency gains in the production. The emissions of dust to air will be reduced by more than two thirds through the installation of a new electrostatic filter.
Adding “biosolids” along with conventional fertilizer may reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving soil, according to a new study from University of Alberta.
Pulp mill waste destined for the landfill could instead be useful as an organic fertilizer to help reduce the environmental impact of using conventional fertilizers while improving soil and tree growth, University of Alberta research shows.
A two-year study conducted on a hybrid poplar tree plantation in northern Alberta showed that compared with using conventional fertilizers alone, adding biosolids — wood and other fibres left over from pulp and paper production — reduced harmful greenhouse gas emissions from the soil.

Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has introduced its Advantage StretchWrap, a paper wrapping solution that replaces plastic stretch film and enables a more efficient logistics process, to Sentrex, a European manufacturer of paper bags.
Advantage StretchWrap is a fully recyclable kraft paper that is made from responsibly sourced materials. Mondi developed it to stretch and resist punctures, making it ideal for replacing the plastic stretch film that has traditionally been used for pallet wrapping and transportation. Advantage StretchWrap has 62% lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions when compared to virgin plastic stretch film, and 49% lower GHG emissions when compared to plastic film made with 50% recycled content, according to a peer-reviewed independent life cycle assessment.*
