Klingele signs term sheet with Kyoto Group for Heatcube installation

Kyoto Group announces that it has signed a term sheet for delivering a Heatcube to one of Germany’s major paper and packaging manufacturers—Klingele. The designated site for installing a first Heatcube is at Klingele’s facility in Werne, a corrugated board plant in Germany.

Klingele Paper and Packaging Group, a global manufacturer with 13 corrugated board plants worldwide, 8 processing plants and 3 paper mills, aims to achieve a reduction of CO2 emissions by the year 2030. At the plant in Werne a reduction of 55% of CO2 emissions is planned by 2030. This goal will be accomplished through the utilization of off-grid wind and solar energy, coupled with the replacement of the existing gas boilers for steam production. To address the intermittent nature of renewables, Klingele plans to install Kyoto Group’s molten salt thermal energy storage solution, Heatcube. This innovative system will capture electricity when available and supply steam as needed. The recently announced AI-powered back end of Heatcube will also ensure state-of-the-art preventive and predictive maintenance for Klingele.

DS Smith box plant reduces energy use by 20 per cent

DS Smith, a leading provider of sustainable, fiber-based packaging worldwide, recently completed the installation of new steam recycling technology that will reduce energy consumption by 20% in its Columbia, S.C. corrugated packaging facility. This investment is part of DS Smith’s ambitious sustainability commitments to its North American customers.

The new multi-million-dollar Baviera Steam Systems technology installed at the specialty coated box manufacturing plant efficiently recovers condensate typically lost in the corrugation process. Energy savings created through condensate recovery reduces DS Smith’s carbon footprint in Columbia, and the new technology also increases productivity by reducing maintenance downtime at the plant.

“Our South Carolina facility makes water-resistant, fully recyclable Greencoat® boxes for fresh poultry and produce providers – agribusinesses that recognize decarbonization as a key factor to their continued success,” said Steven Rose, Managing Director, Packaging, for DS Smith North America Packaging and Paper (NAPP). “With this investment, we are decreasing the amount of natural gas consumed at the facility by 20%, substantially reducing CO2 emissions while also enabling faster throughput.”

Liquid-cooled drives: turning a new page for pulp and paper

The pulp and paper industry has long used variable speed drives (VSDs) to achieve greater energy efficiency and precise motor control. However, some places within a mill present challenges for air-cooled VSDs.

In some cases, especially in older mills, dust regularly clogs the air intakes, or corrosive gas damages them. In others, the heat given off by the drive during operation is undesirable.  Meanwhile, the larger footprint of an air-cooled VSD may be an issue for facilities with limited floor space.
