The pulp and paper industry is taking significant steps toward a low-carbon future, according to a new report released today by ABB.

Following the start-up of a Toscotec’s TADVISION® tissue machine, Hengan International Group has launched on the Chinese market premium quality structured tissue with excellent bulk, softness and absorbency properties. Installed at their Xiaogan mill, the new line is the first of two TAD machines that Hengan ordered from Toscotec to launch pioneering tissue products in the demanding Chinese market.
Hengan’s second TAD machine will be installed at their headquarters production base in Fujian province, and it is scheduled for start-up in 2024.

According to Sappi, prices for Coated and Uncoated Fine papers were increased during January and February but not to the levels necessary to maintain a viable business. Cost levels, particularly for pulp and transport have continued to increase heavily and are expected to escalate further in the coming months.

Model acquired the Eilenburg mill from Stora Enso in 2021 and converted the newsprint machine to recycled corrugated case material production. Model Sachsen Papier, which is the official name of the Eilenburg paper mill site, will sell containerbaord to third parties as well.

US packaging producer Berry Global Group signed a definitive agreement with fellow US Glatfelter Corporation on 7 February for the spin-off and merger of the majority of Berry’s Health, Hygiene ad Specialties segment, including nonwovens and films (“HHNF”), with Glatfelter. The merger reportedly aims to create a leading, publicly-traded company in the specialty materials industry.

The situation in many paper markets in Germany remains challenging as February starts. Suppliers of packaging papers and boards see the necessity for price hikes, while the pressure on the publication paper market remains high.

Recently, Sun Paper’s two state-of-the-art packaging paper machines PM 2 and PM 3 were successfully commissioned at the Nanning, China site within one month.
