Graphic Packaging Holding Company, a leading provider of consumer packaging, today named Mark Connelly Senior Vice President, Investor Strategy and Development. This new role augments Graphic Packaging’s outreach capability with an aim to expand and diversify the company’s investor network globally.
Connelly brings more than 20 years of experience as a securities analyst and strategy consultant. He will report to Graphic Packaging’s Chief Financial Officer Stephen Scherger and work closely with Melanie Skijus, who will continue to lead the company’s investor relations function.

PM 3 successfully passed the tests in only three weeks and achieved a record-breaking start-up time of only one hour from stock on wire to the first saleable paper roll. With the start-up of the two state-of-the-art XcelLine machines from Voith, Sun Paper consolidates its leading position in the global paper industry and sets another milestone in the long-standing cooperation between the two companies. The daily exchange of knowledge and thorough project preparation led to significantly reduced downtimes during project implementation.

Metsä Group and industrial maintenance service provider Quant Finland have agreed to halve the consumption of fossil hydraulic oil together in Metsä Group’s plywood and Kerto LVL mills by 2027 compared to 2022.
Quant is Metsä Group’s maintenance service partner at its Kerto LVL and plywood mills located in Lohja, Punkaharju, Suolahti, Äänekoski and Pärnu. Hydraulic oil is widely used in production machinery and equipment. Oil consumption can be reduced through close monitoring, systematic maintenance and investments.
Large industrial players have significant potential to reduce the environmental impact of the forest industry when working together.

Sappi Limited, a leading producer of dissolving pulp sold under the brand name Verve, continues to reach new milestones by completing the Higg Facility Environmental Management (FEM) verification audit at its Cloquet mill. Based in Northern Minnesota, USA, the mill is one of the leading dissolving pulp facilities to complete this external verification process. A final score of 91.5% was achieved which reinforces and demonstrates the sound environmental practices employed by the mill. Supporting the call to accelerate transparency in the textile and apparel sector, a detailed performance report will be made available to all key stakeholders on request.
Developed by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), the Higg FEM is part of a suite of tools that enables manufacturing facilities of all sizes to measure and score their environmental performance against a standard set of criteria, allowing for meaningful and credible performance benchmarking in the apparel and textile sector. Across topics such as water use, carbon emissions and waste management, the Higg Index can be used by consumer goods brands, retailers, manufacturers, governments, NGOs and consumers to inform their individual sustainability strategies and drive collective industry transformation.

During 2022, Lessebo Paper launched Lessebo Colours, a new series of environmentally friendly papers in a palette consisting of 48 carefully curated shades, specially designed to create high-quality packaging, for maximum expression with minimal footprint.

The share of paper packaging in the estimated US$74 billion overall packaging market in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) continues to see an exponential growth with e-commerce boom and consumer preference veers to sustainable and environment-friendly solutions.
Industry experts participating at the upcoming leading B2B exhibition, Propaper 2023, said that in line with this demand growth, investments in kraft paper mills have also risen in the region in the post-Covid era, with enhanced use of paper packaging across industry verticals such as food, catering hygiene, pharma and cosmetics driving up demand

WestRock today announced it will permanently cease operating its paper mill in Tacoma, Washington, and will conclude production by September 30, 2023.
WestRock is committed to improving its return on invested capital as well as maximizing the performance of its assets. The combination of high operating costs and the need for significant capital investment were the determining factors in the decision to cease operations at the mill.

Bracell recently announced the start of civil works for the largest tissue mill in Latin America. The unit is being built next to Bracell’s pulp mill in Lencois Paulista (SP). In all, the company is investing R$ 5 billion in the city, R$ 2.5 billion of which in the construction of the tissue mill, which is expected to start operating in 2024, and the other half of the amount for investment in a plant production of sodium chlorate and hydrogen peroxide, chemical components used in the pulp production process.

Finnish sustainable textile pioneer Spinnova and the world’s largest pulp producer Suzano have officially opened their first commercial-scale facility producing wood-based SPINNOVA® fibre. Operated by Woodspin – Spinnova and Suzano’s joint venture – the plant will produce 1,000 tonnes of sustainable, recyclable and fully biodegradable textile fibre from responsibly-grown wood each year. This facility marks the first industrial operations Suzano has outside of Brazil. Woodspin has also announced plans to open a second site to scale production further. Their aim is to build one million tonnes of wood-based SPINNOVA® fibre annual production capacity by 2033.

This project has successfully achieved its goal to reduce Kappa variability by 50% and maintain controls running at 92% of the time.
