Runtech rebuilds vacuum system at Enstra Paper, South Africa

Runtech Systems rebuilds vacuum system and improves dewatering at Enstra Paper (Pty) Ltd PM6, South Africa. The delivery includes two low vacuum blowers, three EP600 Turbo Blowers with EcoDrop and EcoSep water separators and an EcoFlow dewatering measurement system for couch save-all and full press section. The new RunEco system replaces 16 liquid ring pumps, which significantly reduces both energy and water consumption. Delivery also includes new double doctor for 1st press bottom roll and suction roll save-all with integrated double doctoring.

“We selected Runtech because their vacuum system is compact, simple and flexible. Runtech understands full paper making process so they were capable of offering a total solution that includes doctors and dewatering measurements in addition to turbo blowers. Measuring water flow accurately is essential for optimizing vacuum levels,” says Nic Campher, Head of Paper, Enstra Paper.

Combining dewatering improvement and EcoFlow system with vacuum system rebuild often brings very significant benefit. We have seen up to 1.5% increase in dryness after press and 20-30 m/min increase in machine speed. Optimized vacuum level will reduce vacuum system power consumption even further as well as press section drive loads,” says Jussi Lahtinen, Sales Director, Runtech Systems.

UPM Timber invests in modernization of Korkeakoski sawmill

UPM invests nearly 10 million euros in the modernization of the Korkeakoski sawmill. A new split saw supplied by USNR will start operating at the sawmill in 2025. This is a very significant investment in the efficiency and competitiveness of the Korkeakoski sawmill.

“The sawmill industry has a long history of over 60 years in Korkeakoski. Great work has been done here for a long time, and this investment is an excellent continuation of that. The Korkeakoski sawmill has been a model example of excellent production efficiency, and this investment will further strengthen our position”, says Korkeakoski Sawmill Director Janne Klaavuniemi.

In the modernization of the sawmill, the split saw in the second stage of sawing will be renewed, along with automation and other equipment. The investment enables more efficient use of raw materials, as the same amount of logs convert to more end product. Modern equipment also increases energy efficiency.

“We aim to develop our sawmills more efficient and responsible in the long term. This investment is a great milestone and very much in line with our goals, as we aim to be a forerunner in sustainability in the industry”, says Thomas Westerback, UPM Timber’s Director, Sustainability and Investments.

Lumber operations to be curtailed in Chapman, Alabama, US

Boise Cascade announced an indefinite curtailment of its lumber production in Chapman, AL. The curtailment will affect approximately 80 positions. The plywood operations at the Chapman location are not part of the curtailment.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notification was provided to impacted employees and specifies that operations will cease on January 28, 2024.

“The team has worked diligently every day; however, a combination of challenges, including required future investments and overall profitability, has led to this decision,” said Chris Seymour, Senior Vice President of Manufacturing Operations. “It was a difficult and unfortunate decision, but after evaluating a number of factors over the past year, it is not feasible to continue operating at an efficient level.”

“We understand the impact that this shutdown has on our employees and their families,” continued Seymour. “We are communicating about job opportunities within the Company as well as resources that are available to assist them.”

“We will work with our Chapman Lumber customers to manage the transition between now and the eventual curtailment,” said Mike Brown, Executive Vice President, Wood Products. “We continue to focus on growing our engineered wood products business and supporting the remainder of our manufacturing locations.”

Higher wood fiber costs for pulpmills worldwide in 2023

Global pulp prices have fallen steadily since late 2022, when they reached record highs. The most significant decline has been for hardwood pulp, traded at a substantial discount to softwood pulp. Global pulp inventories were down during the summer, and there were signs that the market tightened, and pulp producers were starting to see opportunities to move prices upward in the fourth quarter of 2023 following almost 12 months of declining pulp prices.

Despite declines in pulp prices over the past year, wood fiber costs have not experienced the same downward trend. On the contrary, tighter residual supply resulting from lower lumber production has kept wood chip prices high in many markets.

Canfor announces extended curtailment at Polar sawmill

Canfor Corporation recently announced it will curtail operations at its Polar Sawmill located in Bear Lake British Columbia, north of Prince George, following an orderly wind-down.

The curtailment is the result of a shortage of economically available fibre in the region and is expected to be in place for a period of approximately six months. The Company will continue to evaluate market conditions and fibre availability in the region and adjust operations accordingly.

“Unfortunately, BC is amongst the highest-cost operating jurisdictions in the world. With persistent weak market conditions and a shortage of cost-competitive fiber in the region, we simply don’t have enough economic fiber to support both of our Prince George-area mills through this winter. As a result, we are making the difficult decision to curtail operations at Polar to ensure continued operations at our other facilities in the region,” said Stephen Mackie, Executive Vice President, North American Operations.

“We know this will significantly impact our Polar employees, their families, our suppliers and the local community, who all rely on a healthy forest industry. We regret having to take this action and are committed to supporting our employees and their families during this difficult time. We will also continue to encourage government to work with industry, Indigenous partners and communities to address the challenges and uncertainty the industry is facing in accessing fiber in BC – the fiber that supports thousands of manufacturing jobs and creates the low-carbon products the world wants.”

The curtailment will remove approximately 140 million board feet of production over six months.

Stora Enso increases mixed forests by decreasing spruce density in Finland

Stora Enso has launched a new operating model at its logging sites in Finland to improve the vitality and biodiversity of forests. In practice, this is done by reducing the density of planted spruce from 1,800 seedlings per hectare to 1,600 seedlings per hectare. This will increase mixed-species forests, which is one of the overarching objectives of Stora Enso’s biodiversity programme and part of the actions both in Finland and Sweden.

A mixed forest is defined as a forest in which the main tree species does not exceed 75% of the growing stock. It may consist of coniferous trees (such as spruce or pine), broadleaved trees (such as birch), or a mixture of both. These kinds of forests are the environments where biodiversity prospers: especially broadleaved trees create vital habitats for many endangered species. Currently, broadleaves are a minority in boreal forests, which is why concrete actions are needed.

OptiCept enters agreement with a forestry company in Brazil

OptiCept Technologies has entered an agreement with a world-leading forestry company in Brazil. Cuttings will now be boosted with nutrients using a unique vacuum impregnation technology called OptiBoost. The focus is on treating high-yielding cutting clones and maximizing their use in production.

The collaboration was initiated in early 2023 when the company evaluated the method on selected clones. The results achieved motivated the Brazilian company to enter a long-term partnership with OptiCept Technologies and for the implementation of the OptiBoost technology for cuttings.

The OptiBoost technology is a symbiosis of two technologies. Vacuum impregnation and nanotechnology. Cuttings are impregnated with a functionalized nutrient solution based on the third generation of patented nanotechnology. The process is executed in a small vacuum chamber that can manage up to 15,000 cuttings per hour.

The OptiBoost vauum impregnation (VI) is done with the purpose to improve the rooting and growth of cuttings and thereby decreases losses of eucalyptus and tropical clone cuttings propagation.
