Average Recycled Content of Canadian-Made Paper Packaging Is More Than 80%

The latest research results from the Paper and Paperboard Packaging Environmental Council (PPEC) show the success of the paper packaging circular economy and continue to confirm that the feedstock used for the production of boxboard and containerboard in Canada is made of primarily recycled content fibres.

The latest report represents the results of the 17th biennial Recycled Content survey, which is conducted to determine the average recycled content contained in the major paper packaging grades made by Canadian mills.

The 2022 results show that the average recycled content of domestic shipments for the top two major packaging grades was 80.2%. The average recycled content for domestic shipments of boxboard was 86.2%, while the average recycled content for domestic shipments of containerboard was 81%.

Canadian manufacturing sales down 2.1% in June

Advance results indicate that total manufacturing sales in Canada decreased ۲.۱% in June 2023. The largest declines were in the petroleum and coal product, chemical, and food product industries, as Statistics Canada reports.

This estimate was calculated based on a weighted response rate of ۶۶.۹%. The average final response rate for the survey over the previous ۱۲ months has been ۹۴.۵%.

Canadian lumber production down 6.1% in April

Lumber production in Canada decreased ۱۴.۹% from March to ۴ ۰۷۴.۰ thousand m3 in April. Production was down ۶.۱% from April ۲۰۲۲, reports Statistics Canada.

Sawmills shipped ۳ ۹۳۵.۰ thousand m3 of lumber in April, down ۸.۲% from March and down ۷.۹% from April ۲۰۲۲.

According to Analytics, in April 2023, Canada decreased exports of lumber to the United States by 4.4% year-on-year. Supplies to China increased by 54.9%, supplies to Japan decreased by 39%. The average price of lumber was set at $200.7 per m3.

Manitoba Government supports exploring greener technology at Canadian Kraft Paper Industries’ mill

The Manitoba government and the Community Economic Development Fund are partnering with Canadian Kraft Paper Industries Ltd. (CKP) to explore opportunities for transitioning to a greener economy in northern Manitoba, Natural Resources and Northern Development Minister Greg Nesbitt announced.

“Our government continues to invest in the north, creating and maintaining sustainable jobs,” said Nesbitt. “The use of forest biomass in the north can benefit both the environment and the local economy. It is a potential win-win that is well worth exploring further.”

Despite a slight decline in the overall manufacturing sector in February, Canadian wood products manufacturing demonstrated resiliency in March 2023. According to Statistics Canada, the capacity utilization rate of the wood product manufacturing industry was 80.8% in March 2023, a significant rebound from 76.8% in February 2023. However, this represents a decrease when compared to the same period last year, where the rate stood at 85.6%.
