Kemira announces a multi-million euro investment in water treatment chemicals production in the UK

Kemira, a global leader in sustainable chemical solutions for water-intensive industries, announces a significant capacity extension of its ferric sulfate water treatment chemicals production line in Goole, UK. The additional 70 000 tons capacity investment helps meet the growing demand for coagulants due to the new and stricter Asset Management Plan 7 and 8 regulation on phosphorus and other nutrient discharge from wastewater treatment set out in the Water Industry National Environment Programme in the UK. The new capacity is planned to be in operation in Q3 2025.

“We support our customers in meeting the tighter regulations and help them to optimize the chemistries used in every part of the water treatment process. This investment will increase our flexibility to utilize different types of iron raw materials which will further secure our strong supply service when demand increases. We are well placed to meet the growing future needs of the UK water treatment industry,” says Wido Waelput, Senior Vice President, Commercial, EMEA & APAC, Industry & Water segment at Kemira.

Kemira produces currently over 350 000 tons of water treatment and other chemicals annually at its four UK manufacturing sites in Goole, Ellesmere Port, Teesport and Bradford. Kemira has invested significantly in the Goole site in recent years. The latest expansion program was completed in 2021.

Why printed receipts still matter

Printed receipts are important for consumers and retailers alike. Here’s why.

Holiday spending is expected to increase as much as 4 percent this year. That may not sound like much, but Americans are on track to spend a record $960 billion celebrating the December holidays. For retailers and consumers alike, printed receipts can help make the season brighter.

Traditionally, Black Friday heralds the start of the holiday season, but for many, holiday spending is already in full swing, and it won’t stop until January, after the last gifts have been opened and any returns have been made. And despite what some anti-receipt advocates say, consumers overwhelmingly prefer to receive printed receipts with their purchases instead of digital receipts.

“In our recent consumer survey, we found that 76 percent of folks want some form of a printed receipt, or at least the option to choose a printed receipt,” says Andrea Forehand, Domtar’s director of sales for thermal POS. “Skip the Slip legislation has come up twice in California, and we’ve been successful in lobbying to prevent that legislation from becoming law because people do want the choice.”

4evergreen alliance moves from guidance to action at Annual Conference: “The Pathway to Circularity”

More than 150 people joined in Brussels and online to celebrate the 3-year anniversary of 4evergreen at a conference recognizing the alliance’s achievements so far and exploring how to maximize industry uptake of 4evergreen’s circularity toolbox.

“After three years of intense work, we have a set of resources that is open to everyone”, said Hans Wortman, 4evergreen Chair. “It is now the turn of companies, partners, and public authorities to use them and continue paving the way to Europe’s green future”.

With the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation being voted on the same week in the European Parliament, a highlight of the conference was a policy panel exploring how fiber-based packaging can continue to lead on sustainability and circularity in the new policy landscape.

“We are optimistic that, upon the adoption of the proposal for the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), we can collectively make it work. Acknowledging that we don’t possess all the solutions, our commitment is to stay engaged with the industry and environmental organizations. Together, we aim to identify economically efficient solutions that align with the sustainability expectations of consumers,” said Aurel Ciobanu Dordea, Director, European Commission, Directorate-General for Environment, Circular Economy.

Sustainable packaging fuels growth and innovation in specialty papers, new Smithers data reveal

Demand for more greener packaging is aligning with innovation in industrial applications to future drive sales of specialty papers, according to the latest Smithers research.

Data from its new study – The Future of Specialty Papers to 2028 – show  production of these engineered premium paper grades will reach 26.52 million  tons in 2023, up from 24.23 million tons in 2018. Despite challenging economic conditions in several core markets, an overall positive growth trajectory is forecast by Smithers expert data modeling. Consumption of specialty papers is forecast to increase at a +2.1% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) across 2023-2028, adding an extra 2.97 million tons of demand, globally, over the five[۱]year period.

The specialty paper market remains febrile, recent changes in paper sales  patterns, in particular declining demand for office and printing grades, has seen several graphic paper assets retooled to make specialty grades. Modern papermaking innovations allow these to produce specialty grades on larger more efficient paper machines, threatening the margins of smaller established  specialist paper converters.

Oxygen reactor feed MC pump improves O2 delignification

An Indian pulp and paper customer noticed that their MC pump was not up to par and sought help in reaching the targets on their production line. They suffered from low kappa reduction and high chemical consumption in the oxygen delignification stage. This was mainly due to the O2 stage feed pump limiting the pulp consistency. Their existing, ill-performing MC pump was not able to pump a consistency higher than 7%. Because of this, the steam capacity of the mill was not able to heat the pulp flow to the target temperature. Also, the desired top pressure in the oxygen reactor was not achieved.

The customer contacted Sulzer to analyze the O2 stage, calculate the pumping head at predetermined reactor pressures, and select more suitable and efficient MC equipment to reach the target process conditions. Sulzer’s experts visited the mill site, analyzed the whole pumping system, and calculated the required pump duty point. As a result of the thorough research, the client’s old pump was replaced by Sulzer’s MCE22-100-V, a high-quality MC pump with internal degassing.

Iberpapel Gestión reports a net profit of €۳۴.۹۶ million

Iberpapel reported operating profit of €۱۳.۷۷ million in the first nine months of the year, compared to €۶.۲ million in the same period of 2022. Having successfully defended its sales prices and margins, the company managed to eke out growth of 122% in a complicated environment marked by slowing demand in Europe and growing imports (especially from Asia), driving a drop in sales volumes and lower capacity utilisation.

Adding in the gain on the sale of forest land in Uruguay, total reported net profit rises to €۳۴.۹۶ million, year-on-year growth of 463.4%.

In 2023, the company expects to invest over €۲۲.۵ million 2023 in Papelera Guipuzcoana de Zicuñaga. Sappi concludes consultation process at Stockstadt mill

The persistent global economic downturn is proving to be much tougher than anticipated with depressed markets, geopolitical instability and weak economic growth combining to put significant pressure on Sappi, particularly in Europe.

“In response we announced on 6 July 2023 the start of a consultation process on the possible closure of Stockstadt Mill. We have completed this process and agreed on the social plan for the employees. In addition, an agreement has been signed for the sale of the site. The closure of the site should be completed during the first calendar quarter of 2024. Once all closure elements are taken into account, the impact is expected to be cash neutral”, Sappi writes.

Sappi continues to be faced with significant overcapacity in graphic paper forcing us to take extended periods of costly commercial downtime. As the recent over-stocking by customers reduces it has become very clear that demand will not return to previous levels. Combined with input cost pressure, we do not see this situation, caused by factors beyond our control improving in the foreseeable future.
