EIB signs SEK 1.3 billion loan agreement with Billerud for bioproduct mill upgrade

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a SEK 1.3 billion (approximately €۱۱۰ million) loan agreement with Swedish company Billerud, a world-leading paper and packaging materials supplier. The loan supports investments in the modernisation and upgrade of a bioproduct mill, including the replacement of a recovery boiler. The upgrades are well anchored in Billerud’s sustainability strategy and will secure high environmental performance for the mill, with increased energy and resource efficiency.

Materials made at Frövi mill are used in various packaging applications, with a particular focus on food and beverage packaging — an area that has strict requirements in terms of durability and hygiene standards. Fibre-based packaging has the advantage of being fossil-free, recyclable, and biodegradable — features that set it apart from fossil-based types of packaging. Materials produced by Billerud can be recycled many times and made into recycled board, before finally being used for energy production.

4evergreen alliance moves from guidance to action at Annual Conference: “The Pathway to Circularity”

More than 150 people joined in Brussels and online to celebrate the 3-year anniversary of 4evergreen at a conference recognizing the alliance’s achievements so far and exploring how to maximize industry uptake of 4evergreen’s circularity toolbox.

“After three years of intense work, we have a set of resources that is open to everyone”, said Hans Wortman, 4evergreen Chair. “It is now the turn of companies, partners, and public authorities to use them and continue paving the way to Europe’s green future”.

With the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation being voted on the same week in the European Parliament, a highlight of the conference was a policy panel exploring how fiber-based packaging can continue to lead on sustainability and circularity in the new policy landscape.

“We are optimistic that, upon the adoption of the proposal for the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), we can collectively make it work. Acknowledging that we don’t possess all the solutions, our commitment is to stay engaged with the industry and environmental organizations. Together, we aim to identify economically efficient solutions that align with the sustainability expectations of consumers,” said Aurel Ciobanu Dordea, Director, European Commission, Directorate-General for Environment, Circular Economy.

UPM Specialty Papers now offers compostable label face papers for fruit and vegetable stickers

UPM Specialty Papers now offers a compostable solution for paper-based food stickers. UPM LabelCoatTM and UPM LabelCoatTM Prime label face papers are certified as both industrially and home compostable, helping customers and brand owners meet EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation proposal (PPWR) requirements.

PPWR aims to ensure that all packaging in the EU must be reusable or recyclable by 2030. It also sets out the requirements that sticky labels attached to fruits and vegetables need to be compostable in industrially controlled conditions.

“We are happy to provide a compostable solution, which helps our customers to meet this regulatory change as well as their sustainability targets,” says Juhani Ylikoski, Sales Director at UPM Specialty Papers.

In addition to fruit stickers, UPM LabelCoatTM and UPM LabelCoatTM Prime can be used for a variety of other pressure-sensitive labelling applications.

Maximising the recyclability of paper sacks

The proposed EU Regulation on Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR) aims to tackle the problem of growing packaging waste. One of the targets is to make all packaging recyclable by 2030. To support sack kraft paper producers, paper sack converters and fillers to maximise the recyclability of all paper sacks placed on the market, EUROSAC and CEPI Eurokraft have published Paper Sacks – Design for Recyclability Guidelines. These guidelines provide recommendations for the materials used and for the physical construction of paper sacks.

New EU Rules Risk Flood of New Plastic Packaging and Contradict Years of Progress to Curb Plastic in the EU

The EU is close to agreeing new rules around packaging and packaging waste, but amendments proposed to the Commission’s proposal risk flooding the market with millions of tonnes of new plastic and rolling back a decade of measures to curb plastic use, according to DS Smith, the FTSE 100 leader in sustainable packaging, paper products and recycling.

Amendments to the Commission’s proposal for a Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) are being debated by MEPs and Member States, and proposed changes include introducing mandatory reuse targets for all materials.
