DS Smith box plant reduces energy use by 20 per cent

DS Smith, a leading provider of sustainable, fiber-based packaging worldwide, recently completed the installation of new steam recycling technology that will reduce energy consumption by 20% in its Columbia, S.C. corrugated packaging facility. This investment is part of DS Smith’s ambitious sustainability commitments to its North American customers.

The new multi-million-dollar Baviera Steam Systems technology installed at the specialty coated box manufacturing plant efficiently recovers condensate typically lost in the corrugation process. Energy savings created through condensate recovery reduces DS Smith’s carbon footprint in Columbia, and the new technology also increases productivity by reducing maintenance downtime at the plant.

“Our South Carolina facility makes water-resistant, fully recyclable Greencoat® boxes for fresh poultry and produce providers – agribusinesses that recognize decarbonization as a key factor to their continued success,” said Steven Rose, Managing Director, Packaging, for DS Smith North America Packaging and Paper (NAPP). “With this investment, we are decreasing the amount of natural gas consumed at the facility by 20%, substantially reducing CO2 emissions while also enabling faster throughput.”

Elopak Selects Little Rock, Arkansas for Its New Liquid Carton Production Plant

Elopak has announced plans to build its first U.S. production plant with the latest state-of-the-art technology for the production of Pure-Pak® cartons for liquid dairy, juices, plant-based products and liquid eggs.

The new production facility will be located in Little Rock, Arkansas and is expected to start production in the first half of 2025. It represents a significant investment for the region of around USD 70 million including the land, the building and the equipment.

In a statement, Elopak said, “Following the investment announcement in June 2023, the company has evaluated different financing opportunities and concluded to own and fully finance the plant on the balance sheet. Hence, the nominal cost of the investment will be recognized in the balance sheet instead of the discounted value of the lease payments, increasing the reported investment by around USD 15 million.”

This is economically more profitable for Elopak compared to partly leasing, which was assumed in June.

EIB signs SEK 1.3 billion loan agreement with Billerud for bioproduct mill upgrade

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a SEK 1.3 billion (approximately €۱۱۰ million) loan agreement with Swedish company Billerud, a world-leading paper and packaging materials supplier. The loan supports investments in the modernisation and upgrade of a bioproduct mill, including the replacement of a recovery boiler. The upgrades are well anchored in Billerud’s sustainability strategy and will secure high environmental performance for the mill, with increased energy and resource efficiency.

Materials made at Frövi mill are used in various packaging applications, with a particular focus on food and beverage packaging — an area that has strict requirements in terms of durability and hygiene standards. Fibre-based packaging has the advantage of being fossil-free, recyclable, and biodegradable — features that set it apart from fossil-based types of packaging. Materials produced by Billerud can be recycled many times and made into recycled board, before finally being used for energy production.
