Rottneros invests in Blue Ocean Closures

Rottneros AB, one of the world’s leading suppliers of first-class market pulp, is now investing inBlue Ocean Closures and becomes a co-owner of the Swedish start-up, developing proprietaryfiber-based packaging materials.

Since just two years, Blue Ocean Closures AB has developed technology to produce fiber-based closures for consumer packaging at large scale, aiming to replace current plastic solutions on a global market. The innovative technology and material have potential for many more high volume use cases and making an impact in terms of reducing plastic pollution and its climate effects.

EIB signs SEK 1.3 billion loan agreement with Billerud for bioproduct mill upgrade

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a SEK 1.3 billion (approximately €۱۱۰ million) loan agreement with Swedish company Billerud, a world-leading paper and packaging materials supplier. The loan supports investments in the modernisation and upgrade of a bioproduct mill, including the replacement of a recovery boiler. The upgrades are well anchored in Billerud’s sustainability strategy and will secure high environmental performance for the mill, with increased energy and resource efficiency.

Materials made at Frövi mill are used in various packaging applications, with a particular focus on food and beverage packaging — an area that has strict requirements in terms of durability and hygiene standards. Fibre-based packaging has the advantage of being fossil-free, recyclable, and biodegradable — features that set it apart from fossil-based types of packaging. Materials produced by Billerud can be recycled many times and made into recycled board, before finally being used for energy production.

New measurement method for determining the price and quality of wood chips and sawdust

The Swedish greentech company Mantex develops and sells industrial measuring equipment for the analysis of wood raw materials in the paper and pulp industry, wood pellets production and in the bioenergy industry.

Now the company’s product Biomass Analyzer has received type approval from Swedish Biometria regarding the determination of dry matter content in wood chips and sawdust. The type approval means that it may officially be used as a measurement method to determine price and quality on the existing market for wood chips and sawdust.

The Mantex Biomass Analyzer has, after extensive tests and evaluations by Biometria and Skogforsk (the Swedish forestry research institute), received a type approval from Biometria regarding the determination of dry matter content in wood chips and sawdust.

PulPac receives three new US patents

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted innovative Swedish company, PulPac, three new US patents, two of which concern the divisional applications from PulPac’s original applications filed in 2016/2017, where one is related to the basic process of Dry Molded Fiber, and the second is related specifically to bottle forming. The third patent concerns the layering of the cellulose web in the Dry Molded Fiber process.

Essity to Sell Its Operations in Russia

Essity has signed an agreement with a buyer and the transaction has been approved by the Russian authorities, it said, adding that the deal was expected to be finalised during the second quarter of 2023.

The world’s second-biggest consumer tissue maker began work on exiting the Russian market in April, after taking a writedown of about 1.7 billion crowns ($157.25 million) on its assets in the country, the statement added.
