Spanish Saica Group has increased its participation in Italian company Lic Packaging. In September 2023, exports of toilet paper from Italy contracted to 10K tons, reducing by -5.8% compared with the month before. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 with an increase of 27% month-to-month. In value terms, toilet paper exports reduced to $23M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023.
Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2023 with an increase of 23% m-o-m.

ABB and the European Investment Bank (EIB), the lending arm of the European Union, have signed a €۵۰۰ million financing agreement to support ABB’s research and development in its Electrification business area.
Global demand for electricity is growing 10 times faster than other energy sources.1 Addressing this increasing demand in the context of the energy transition, ABB plans to use the EIB funding to design and develop next generation electrical distribution solutions. Development efforts will include solid-state circuit breakers, eco-friendly switchgear, and technology that enhances building efficiency and automation.
ABB’s solutions are used for example in commercial buildings, industrial operations or microgrids. The funding will support R&D projects in Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Finland, Norway, Poland, Switzerland and several other European countries.

Toscotec started up a packaging paper machine at Cartiera Pirinoli after the complete rebuild of the press section at their Roccavione facility in Italy.
Toscotec installed a first nip with double felted press roll and a second nip with a Voith NipcoFlex shoe press designed for a maximum load of 1,600 kN/m. The project also included a fully automatic tail feeding system, felt runs, showers, rolls, doctors, as well as guide and stretcher systems.

Sofidel announced that it is investing $185 million to increase production capacity at its tissue mill in Circleville, Ohio. The project involves the construction of a new building that will house a new Valmet DCT 200 tissue machine. The new machine will have the capacity to produce 70,000 metric tons per year.
The Circleville plant, which started-up in October of 2018, currently operates two Valmet Advantage NTT tissue machines. Each machine has the capacity to produce 70,000 metric tons per year.

Prinzhorn Group’s Dunapack Packaging has completed the take-over of the corrugated packaging plant Scatoloficio La Veggia s.p.a. located in Roteglia, Italy. The plant has a production capacity of 200 million sqm annually with around 140 employees. Prinzhorn Group had announced its strategic long-term interest in Italy in 2022.
Max Hölbl, Managing Director for Prinzhorn Holding and the Division Packaging, said: “With the entry into the 2nd largest corrugated market in Europe, we are adding an important piece to our strategic goals. At a groundbreaking in Pickaway County, just south of Circleville, on July 11, 2016, Sofidel committed to employing 300 Ohioans. Today, under a proposed expansion of their Circleville facility, that number could grow to nearly 600. Sofidel, a tissue paper manufacturer from Italy, first established operations in the United States in 2012. It was in Ohio where they’ve found incredible success.

International technology group Andritz has received an order from DS Smith to supply a complete stock preparation line and an innovative reject treatment system for the mill in Porcari, Italy, that produces new packaging papers from 100% recycled paper. The stock preparation line includes Europe’s largest FibreFlow drum pulper.
The equipment provided by Andritz will be used on the new paper machine, due to start up mid-2025, that will provide a range of paper grades for the FMCG and e-commerce sectors serviced by DS Smith.

Albany International on June 14 announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire privately held Heimbach Group, a leading supplier of paper machine clothing, in an all cash transaction valued at approximately EUR 153 million, including the assumption of EUR 21 million net debt.
The transaction has been unanimously approved by the Albany Board of Directors and Heimbach’s shareholders, and is expected to close in the second half of 2023, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
Albany will fund the transaction with cash held outside the United States.
