Higher wood fiber costs for pulpmills worldwide in 2023

Global pulp prices have fallen steadily since late 2022, when they reached record highs. The most significant decline has been for hardwood pulp, traded at a substantial discount to softwood pulp. Global pulp inventories were down during the summer, and there were signs that the market tightened, and pulp producers were starting to see opportunities to move prices upward in the fourth quarter of 2023 following almost 12 months of declining pulp prices.

Despite declines in pulp prices over the past year, wood fiber costs have not experienced the same downward trend. On the contrary, tighter residual supply resulting from lower lumber production has kept wood chip prices high in many markets.

Sustainable packaging fuels growth and innovation in specialty papers, new Smithers data reveal

Demand for more greener packaging is aligning with innovation in industrial applications to future drive sales of specialty papers, according to the latest Smithers research.

Data from its new study – The Future of Specialty Papers to 2028 – show  production of these engineered premium paper grades will reach 26.52 million  tons in 2023, up from 24.23 million tons in 2018. Despite challenging economic conditions in several core markets, an overall positive growth trajectory is forecast by Smithers expert data modeling. Consumption of specialty papers is forecast to increase at a +2.1% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) across 2023-2028, adding an extra 2.97 million tons of demand, globally, over the five[۱]year period.

The specialty paper market remains febrile, recent changes in paper sales  patterns, in particular declining demand for office and printing grades, has seen several graphic paper assets retooled to make specialty grades. Modern papermaking innovations allow these to produce specialty grades on larger more efficient paper machines, threatening the margins of smaller established  specialist paper converters.

Daio Paper to reconstruct damaged boiler

Japanese Daio Paper Corp. will spend approximately 19 billion yen to reconstruct the boiler at its subsidiary, Iwaki Daio Paper Corp., based in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, according to a press release from the company.

The accident occurred on September 6, 2022.

Daio’s Board of Directors, at its meeting held recently, voted to approve a boiler reconstruction plan calling for  the adoption of recurrence-preventing measures addressing multiple presumed causes of the explosion based on the accident investigation report.

The Daio Group is working to realize, through business activities, its management philosophy, “Shaping an  abundant and affable future for the world.” In its business activities, the company will continue making efforts to ensure stability in product quality and reduce the environmental load through the effective use of natural resources while giving top priority to safety.

Rengo to achieve zero use of coal at manufacturing sites by 2027

The Rengo Group will achieve zero use of coal at manufacturing sites in Japan by 2027. Currently, the Paperboard Production Group’s Kanazu Mill and Marusan Paper Mfg. Co., Ltd. use a total of approximately 125,000 tons of coal each year. Kanazu Mill will convert to the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for fuel in 2026 and Marusan Paper Mfg. in 2027 to fully abolish the use of coal. This will move the Group significantly closer toward achieving the stated target for reduction in CO2 emissions derived from fossil energy.

The Group has also declared in Rengo Group Environment Action 2050 that it is taking on the challenge of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In addition to the plan for zero use of coal, the Group will implement further environmental countermeasures to achieve carbon neutrality.

In January 2023, the imports of wood pellets to Japan expanded 42% year-on-year to 456 thousand tonnes.
the average price for wood pellets imported to Japan expanded 7% compared to the previous month and amounted to $242 per tonne. This is 30% more than a year ago when it was $187.
