Metsä Group and Sweco have signed an agreement for the design of Kerto LVL mill

Metsä Group and Sweco, a specialist in the built environment and industry, have signed an agreement for the implementation planning of the new Kerto LVL mill in Äänekoski, Finland.

“We have strong confidence in Sweco’s expertise and resources from our previous collaboration projects. It is therefore natural that we continue our cooperation in this project to develop the Äänekoski mill area,” says Jaakko Anttila, Executive Vice President at Metsä Wood.

Sweco is responsible for the complete implementation planning of the mill project, including structural, process and plant design. Sweco was also responsible for the design of Metsä Group’s Äänekoski bioproduct mill, which started operations in 2017, and the planned wood product mill will apply the synergy benefits offered by the mill area.

Metsä Board commences change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs in Finland

Metsa Board, part of Metsa Group, will initiate change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs for its paperboard and BCTMP mills in Finland. The negotiations involve a total of approximately 1,100 employees at the Joutseno, Kaskinen, Kemi, Kyro, Tampere, Simpele and Äänekoski mills.

The possible layoffs would last a maximum of 90 days and could be implemented in several instalments during 2024.

The change negotiations will start in week 45 and are estimated to last two weeks. With the change negotiations, Metsä Board is preparing for a possible continuation of the adjustment of production to match the low delivery volumes, if the demand situation for paperboards does not improve in 2024. The allocation and amount of layoffs will be specified during 2024.

Metsä Board has announced on similar layoffs on May 17, 2023, which may continue until the end of 2023. The possible layoffs announced now would be scheduled for 2024, and will therefore have no impact on Metsä Board’s operating result for January–September 2023 and January–December 2023.

One Equity Partners to sell Walki to Japan’s Oji Group

One Equity Partners announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell Walki Holding Oy, a pan-European supplier of sustainable and high-performing packaging and engineered materials solutions, to Oji Holdings Corporation, a Japanese paper products technology company.

 

Founded in 1930 and headquartered in Espoo, Finland, Walki is a specialty packaging materials manufacturer, offering consumer and industrial packaging for food and specialty consumer products, as well as engineered materials, such as insulation and fire-retardant facings, sustainable membranes, and protective clothing applications. The Company has 17 production facilities worldwide and employs more than 1,700 people. OEP’s acquisition of Walki closed in July 2018.

Metsä Group is looking into the construction of the first mill producing Muoto packaging in Rauma

Metsä Group is conducting a pre-study related to the construction of a first commercial mill for producing Muoto™ packaging products on its Rauma mill site, Finland. The goal is to determine the mill’s technical feasibility and economic profitability.

 

It is envisioned that the mill will produce Muoto fibre-based packaging tailored to various uses in people’s daily lives. Muoto is a wood-based alternative to plastics and aluminium in food packaging, for example. In addition to being easy to mould in different shapes, Muoto is lightweight, strong and recyclable.

Metsä Tissue chooses Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire for planned landmark UK investment

Metsä Tissue announces that it has chosen Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire as the site for its planned new state-of-the-art tissue paper mill in the UK. This landmark investment of several hundreds of millions of pounds will deliver the largest tissue mill in the UK and significantly reduce the quantity of tissue products that are currently imported into the UK and Ireland each year. The new mill will create 400+ jobs at the facility, as well as thousands more across the supply chain and the local economy.

Sappi’s Kirkniemi paper mill switches to bioenergy

Sappi Europe’s Kirkniemi Mill in Lohja, Finland, has successfully made the switch from using fossil fuels to renewable energy to fuel the production of the Galerie paper range. A €۱۶.۵ million investment into state-of-the-art facilities and machinery for the reception, storage and handling of biofuels is the latest in a string of efforts by Sappi in meeting its Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)-approved emissions reduction goal across all its regions.

The official inauguration of the new facilities for reception, storage and handling of biofuels on August 30, 2023, was attended by Kai Mykkänen, the Finnish Minister for Climate and the Environment, who spoke about how the multiple environmental investments by Sappi at Kirkniemi fit with Finland’s ambitious goals for carbon neutrality and leadership in the new energy sector.

Valmet ranked as the most attractive employer in Finland among engineering professionals

Valmet has been ranked as the most attractive employer among engineering professionals in Finland according to a new study by Universum. The ranking was published in Universum’s annual survey, which is the biggest employer attractiveness survey in Finland. Earlier this year, Valmet was ranked as the second most attractive employer among engineering students in Finland.

 

Being recognized as the most attractive employer among engineering professionals is a great achievement for Valmet in Finland, but according to Macharey, the work done in other 40 operating countries carries equal weight.

UPM Appoints Aki Temmes as Executive Vice President of UPM Fibres

UPM announced the appointment of Aki Temmes as Executive Vice President responsible for UPM Fibres Business Area, effective December 1, 2023. He will report to Jussi Pesonen, President and CEO, and be based in Helsinki, Finland.

Temmes is currently Senior Vice President, Business Control and Finance Operations. Prior to that he was responsible for UPM’s Timber business and UPM Fibres Business Area Business Control.

Temmes joined UPM in 2003 and has held multiple roles in number of business finance positions in Finland and France. He holds a master’s degree in accounting and finance?and an Executive MBA. He is a Finnish citizen.

Change in the Andritz Executive Board

Jarno Nymark (M.Sc. Eng.) has been appointed to the ANDRITZ AG Executive Board as of October 1, 2023, assuming responsibility for the Pulp & Paper Business Area.

Previously, the business area was led by Joachim Schönbeck for the capital business and Humbert Köfler for the service business. In the future, Joachim Schönbeck will focus on his role as President and CEO of ANDRITZ, while Humbert Köfler will retire after 36 years with the company.

Jarno Nymark currently works as Senior VP and Global Division Manager for Fiber Technologies. He assumed this role in 2022, prior to which he successfully held various global management positions in Finland, Germany and China.

“I warmly welcome Jarno Nymark to our Executive Board. Jarno has worked in the company for his entire career, and his extensive experience in demanding global positions at ANDRITZ gives him an excellent background to lead and grow our pulp & paper business. I would also like to thank Humbert Köfler for his dedicated long-term leadership and his many contributions to the ANDRITZ GROUP,” says Joachim Schönbeck, President and CEO of ANDRITZ.

Koskisen to invest in new log yard in connection with sawmill

The wood products company Koskisen will continue to develop Sawmill Industry’s production and has decided to invest in an eight-hectare log yard in connection with the new sawmill in Järvelä. The investment includes a log sorting yard and line with control rooms, as well as a stormwater treatment system. In addition, a new access route to the factory area, a gate environment, access control and a vehicle scale will be built.

The value of the investment is approximately EUR 15 million and the majority of it will be allocated to 2024. The new log yard and related operations are expected to be completed at the beginning of 2025.

 

Today, logs are sorted in the Koskisen Tehdastie industrial area and transported by trucks to a sawmill about four kilometres away on Mäntsäläntie. The new log yard will significantly reduce transport costs and the carbon footprint of transports.
