Metsä Group’s Kemi bioproduct mill moves towards full capacity production

Kemi bioproduct mill is ramping up towards full capacity production and pulp deliveries to customers have started. It is planned to take approximately one year to reach full production capacity at the mill.

“When starting up a mill of this size, it is already clear that the production process must be optimised and the right process conditions must be sought to ensure continuous efficient production and high product quality. We have been actively working on this with our equipment suppliers and the work has paid off. Production continuity, production volumes and product quality have developed in the right direction. Full production capacity will be reached as planned in autumn next year,” says Tomi Seppä, mill manager of the bioproduct mill.

Metsä Board commences change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs in Finland

Metsa Board, part of Metsa Group, will initiate change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs for its paperboard and BCTMP mills in Finland. The negotiations involve a total of approximately 1,100 employees at the Joutseno, Kaskinen, Kemi, Kyro, Tampere, Simpele and Äänekoski mills.

The possible layoffs would last a maximum of 90 days and could be implemented in several instalments during 2024.

The change negotiations will start in week 45 and are estimated to last two weeks. With the change negotiations, Metsä Board is preparing for a possible continuation of the adjustment of production to match the low delivery volumes, if the demand situation for paperboards does not improve in 2024. The allocation and amount of layoffs will be specified during 2024.

Metsä Board has announced on similar layoffs on May 17, 2023, which may continue until the end of 2023. The possible layoffs announced now would be scheduled for 2024, and will therefore have no impact on Metsä Board’s operating result for January–September 2023 and January–December 2023.

Metsä Board’s Kemi mill increases white kraftliner production capacity to 465,000 tonnes

The development programme for Metsä Board’s white kraftliner mill in Kemi has been completed in parallel with Metsä Fibre’s new bioproduct mill. Metsä Board and Metsä Fibre are part of Metsä Group. In addition to increasing the mill’s capacity by 40,000 tonnes per year, the development programme will reduce the mill’s energy consumption by 5% and water consumption by around 40% per tonne produced.

The Kemi paperboard mill is the world’s largest producer of coated white top kraftliner and its products are used as a surface material for corrugated packaging worldwide. The development programme will increase Kemi’s annual production capacity of white kraftliners to 465,000 tonnes, with the majority being sold in Europe and North America.

The logistics solution for Metsä Group’s Kemi bioproduct mill is ready

The new logistics solution designed for Metsä Group’s bioproduct mill in Kemi is ready to serve the mill’s transport needs. The solution includes a new logistics road on Sahansaarenkatu leading to the mill site, an electrified private track to the mill and the warehouse in port of Kemi in Ajos.

“The new logistics solution is based on ensuring safety, delivery reliability and quality. Together with our partners, we have built a complete logistics solution to ensure a seamless supply chain from the forest to the mill and from the mill to the customers,” says Pasi Pulkkinen, Logistics Director of the Kemi bioproduct mill project.

Two thirds of the new mill’s wood will be transported by rail, using the new private track. The transports are powered by VR’s latest engines. Vectron electric locomotives can handle loads as heavy as 2,500 tonnes, which means approximately 20–۲۵ per cent more wood per train. All in all, more than 400 wagons will be used for the Kemi bioproduct mill’s rail transports, and the fleet is assigned exclusively to these transports. Traffic infrastructure and related improvements have been addressed from the project’s outset, and they have been designed jointly with the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency and VR. The mill’s private track enables wood transports with electric locomotives all the way to the mill.
