Metsä Group and Sweco have signed an agreement for the design of Kerto LVL mill

Metsä Group and Sweco, a specialist in the built environment and industry, have signed an agreement for the implementation planning of the new Kerto LVL mill in Äänekoski, Finland.

“We have strong confidence in Sweco’s expertise and resources from our previous collaboration projects. It is therefore natural that we continue our cooperation in this project to develop the Äänekoski mill area,” says Jaakko Anttila, Executive Vice President at Metsä Wood.

Sweco is responsible for the complete implementation planning of the mill project, including structural, process and plant design. Sweco was also responsible for the design of Metsä Group’s Äänekoski bioproduct mill, which started operations in 2017, and the planned wood product mill will apply the synergy benefits offered by the mill area.

Metsä Group’s Kuura textile fibre gained important recognition in sustainability matters

Kuura textile fibre, which is made from Metsä Group’s softwood pulp, received a ‘Green Shirt’ rating based on the evaluation arranged by not-for-profit environmental organisation Canopy. Their annual Hot Button Ranking is a well-established tool used in the global textile and fashion industries to assess the sustainability of wood-based textile fibres.

 

Metsä Group’s Kuura textile fibre has achieved high scores based on the Hot Button Ranking evaluation arranged by the Canadian not-for-profit environmental organisation Canopy (see “MI Demo”, which is the subsidiary that owns and operates the Kuura demo plant in Äänekoski, Finland). The Kuura textile fibre, made out of softwood pulp from the Äänekoski bioproduct mill, was awarded for the third consecutive year with a ‘Green Shirt’ rating, the requirements of which are a risk-free, transparent supply chain and traceable raw materials. Leading brand owners, in terms of environmental sustainability, exclusively source fibre from ‘Green Shirt’ producers.

Metsä Group and Quant Finland agree on a common goal to reduce fossil oil consumption

Metsä Group and industrial maintenance service provider Quant Finland have agreed to halve the consumption of fossil hydraulic oil together in Metsä Group’s plywood and Kerto LVL mills by 2027 compared to 2022.

Quant is Metsä Group’s maintenance service partner at its Kerto LVL and plywood mills located in Lohja, Punkaharju, Suolahti, Äänekoski and Pärnu. Hydraulic oil is widely used in production machinery and equipment. Oil consumption can be reduced through close monitoring, systematic maintenance and investments.

Large industrial players have significant potential to reduce the environmental impact of the forest industry when working together.

Metsä Board commences change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs in Finland

Metsa Board, part of Metsa Group, will initiate change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs for its paperboard and BCTMP mills in Finland. The negotiations involve a total of approximately 1,100 employees at the Joutseno, Kaskinen, Kemi, Kyro, Tampere, Simpele and Äänekoski mills.

The possible layoffs would last a maximum of 90 days and could be implemented in several instalments during 2024.

The change negotiations will start in week 45 and are estimated to last two weeks. With the change negotiations, Metsä Board is preparing for a possible continuation of the adjustment of production to match the low delivery volumes, if the demand situation for paperboards does not improve in 2024. The allocation and amount of layoffs will be specified during 2024.

Metsä Board has announced on similar layoffs on May 17, 2023, which may continue until the end of 2023. The possible layoffs announced now would be scheduled for 2024, and will therefore have no impact on Metsä Board’s operating result for January–September 2023 and January–December 2023.

Metsä Group and Andritz plan a lignin product demonstration plant at Äänekoski

Metsä Fibre, part of Metsä Group, is planning to build a demonstration plant for a modified lignin product in cooperation with ANDRITZ . The aim is to develop the process to separate lignin from black liquor in pulp production and to further process it for new end-uses.
