International Paper announces the appointment of Santiago Arbelaez as the Chairman of the Paper and Packaging Board (P+PB) Board of Directors. This leadership appointment was made by USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack and marks a pivotal moment for the organization.
As the Chairman, Arbelaez will collaborate closely with the P+PB leadership team and the eight-member Board of Directors responsible for funding the Paper & Packaging – How Life Unfolds® campaign. The campaign is a national promotion program centered around sustainability within the paper and packaging sectors.
In addition to this appointment, Arbelaez will continue serving as the Vice President of Strategy for International Paper’s Industrial Packaging business, bringing a wealth of experience and strategic insight to his role as Chairman of the P+PB Board.

In an effort to address ongoing cost inflation Sappi Europe will increase prices for its Fine Paper grades by 7-10% from January 2024. This increase is necessary to maintain viability of Sappi’s business, the actual amount will depend on the product and market circumstances.

Progroup will acquire the site of the Stockstadt mill from Sappi and redevelop it for corrugated case material production, EUWID reports.
Representatives of Progroup AG and Sappi Stockstadt GmbH signed a contract to take over the site of the paper and pulp mill.
The traditional paper site offers the successful family business Progroup the opportunity to design another site for the circular economy. The intention is to develop a concept step by step so that the company can use a closed material loop to manufacture containerboard in a sustainable and innovative way.
The local market town, district and the Free State of Bavaria strongly supported the negotiations. The establishment of the site was overseen by Invest in Bavaria, the state government’s business development agency.

Sappi Europe’s Kirkniemi Mill in Lohja, Finland, has successfully made the switch from using fossil fuels to renewable energy to fuel the production of the Galerie paper range. A €۱۶.۵ million investment into state-of-the-art facilities and machinery for the reception, storage and handling of biofuels is the latest in a string of efforts by Sappi in meeting its Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)-approved emissions reduction goal across all its regions.
The official inauguration of the new facilities for reception, storage and handling of biofuels on August 30, 2023, was attended by Kai Mykkänen, the Finnish Minister for Climate and the Environment, who spoke about how the multiple environmental investments by Sappi at Kirkniemi fit with Finland’s ambitious goals for carbon neutrality and leadership in the new energy sector.

Sappi, a leading manufacturer of speciality papers, is expanding its portfolio of wet-glue label papers with the new wet-strength, alkali-resistant Parade Label Pro WS, produced at the Gratkorn site in Austria. Exactly one year ago, Sappi announced the investment of tens of millions of euros in a state-of-the-art technical infrastructure at this site to be able to produce wet-strength, alkali-resistant label papers in the future and to establish itself as a full-range supplier of label papers in the long term.

Dissolving pulp producer Sappi Saiccor signed a three-year service contract with technology group Andritz for two recovery boilers operating at the mill in Umkomaas, South Africa.
The two Andritz boilers producing 230 tph of steam at 490°C and 86 bar have been operating since 2008 and 2021 respectively. The service agreement will help the Saiccor mill maintain safe and efficient operation while improving the reliability and availability of the boilers.
The scope includes operation support, engineering support, pre-shutdown services and annual shutdown services such as mechanical and process inspection, as well as an advisory service for boiler washing and boiler repair and replacement works.
Saiccor mill, situated 50 km south of the port of Durban, produces elemental chlorine free (ECF) dissolving pulp (DP), mostly for the export market. It is one of the production facilities of Sappi group, a leading global provider of everyday materials made from wood fiber-based renewable resources.

In an effort to address prevalent supply chain uncertainties and to maintain the commercial viability of its Graphic Paper business, Sappi Europe will keep prices for its Woodfree Coated Paper grades stable at today’s level for the remainder of 2023.

Sappi Europe announced an upgrade and modernization project at its Gratkorn mill in Austria. The project will focus on Paper Machine 11 (PM11), which will undergo extensive modernization of automation and electrical equipment including drives, control systems, quality control and inspection systems as well as upgrades to the coating profile and other areas.
