Jessica Nordin is taking up the role as new Director of Sustainability at Södra with responsibility for leading and developing Södra’s overall sustainability agenda moving forward. A major focus will lie on strengthening efforts and knowledge concerning biodiversity and sustainable forestry, which are important topics for Södra.
Jessica Nordin most recently served as Environmental Manager at Södra Skog, with responsibility for driving and developing Södra’s nature conservation and consideration activities, a position she has held since 2021. She was previously Climate and Land use Strategist at Sveaskog and expert adviser on issues concerning the climate benefits of forests and sustainable forestry. She has also led several projects related to the development of markets for ecosystem services.

Södra reported second quarter 2023 net sales of SEK 7,322 million (8,953). Operating profit totaled SEK 464 million (2,325), representing an operating margin of 6 percent (26). Return on capital employed was 13 percent (39) and the equity ratio was 61 percent.
During the quarter, the World-class Efficiency project achieved annual efficiency gains of SEK 500 million.

Södra has long had a reputation for sustainable innovation in the pulp industry, from driving the introduction of totally-chlorine free (TCF) bleaching in the 1990s to its recent ground-breaking new textile pulp giving new life to post-consumer textile, OnceMore® and the world’s first pulpable bale strap, FiberSafe®. The latest innovation combines agricultural residues with softwood pulp to produce a new product which is resource-efficient, sustainable and performance-enhancing for papermakers.

The energy and chemicals business plays a key role in Södra’s strategy and is an area that will grow and further contribute to a fossil-free future. As a result, the Södra Bioproducts product area is now being formed to further strengthen the customer offering through a more coherent business structure and sales.
