Paper Excellence Canada extends curtailment of paper operations at Catalyst Crofton mill

While market conditions continue to support the restart of our pulp operations and employment of more than 300 workers, the curtailment of paper operations at Crofton is being extended to the end of November.

The continued curtailment means that approximately 70 paper operations employees will not return to work in November. Paper Excellence Canada continues to work with our employees to mitigate the impact of the ongoing paper production curtailment.

The sales team continues to work with customers to provide alternative products from Catalyst Alberni mill or other mills within the Paper Excellence Group family of companies where possible.

West Fraser to sell two pulp mills in Western Canada to Atlas Holdings

West Fraser Timber and Atlas Holdings recently announced the signing of a definitive agreement for the sale of West Fraser’s Quesnel River Pulp mill in Quesnel, British Columbia and its Slave Lake Pulp mill in Slave Lake, Alberta to Atlas. Atlas owns and operates several pulp, paper and wood products businesses in Canada and the United States.

Paper Excellence Canada to restart pulp operations at Catalyst Crofton

Paper Excellence Canada is pleased to announce the resumption of kraft pulp operations at its Catalyst Crofton mill, bringing more than 300 workers back to their jobs. While market conditions allow for the restart of our pulp operations, the curtailment of paper operations at Crofton is being extended to the end of October.

Canfor to build new state-of-the-art mill in Houston, Canada

Canfor Corporation announces a substantial investment of approximately $200 million in the construction of a cutting-edge manufacturing facility in Houston, British Columbia. This state-of-the-art facility, characterized by its cost-efficiency and high productivity, is set to boast an impressive annual production capacity of approximately 350 million board feet.

Paper Excellence Crofton mill extends shutdown

Members of Unifor Local 1132 at the Crofton mill in British Columbia, Canada, received notice that the scheduled restart of the mill, slated for the end of the month, has been delayed by at least another 30 days, leaving workers and their families in the lurch.

The company advised members that the current plan is to restart production at the kraft mill and the paper mill at the end of September, contingent on the ‘recovery of market prices for its paper products’ – a target that was not clearly defined. This is the third time Paper Excellence has announced a shutdown extension since May 2023, when a 30-day curtailment was planned.

Paper Excellence Canada permanently curtails Catalyst Paper Tiskwat

Paper Excellence Canada announced today the permanent curtailment of Catalyst Paper tiskwat, its paper mill in Powell River, BC.

In the 18 months since the indefinite curtailment, the majority of employees took voluntary severance, and a small number chose to transfer to another Paper Excellence Canada mill. When fully operating, Catalyst Paper tiskwat employed approximately 200 people.

The mill is secured and has been de-risked in terms of removing all major chemicals, fibre and fuels from the site.

Canfor Pulp Reports Results for Second Quarter of 2023

Canfor Pulp Products Inc. (CPPI) today reported its second quarter of 2023 results.

The Company reported an operating loss of $37.9 million for the second quarter of 2023, compared to an operating loss of $25.2 million for the first quarter of 2023. After taking into consideration a net $6.9 million inventory write-down in the current period, the Company’s adjusted operating loss was $31.0 million for the second quarter of 2023, compared to an adjusted operating loss of $21.6 million for the first quarter of 2023. These results, for the most part, reflect the impact of substantial global pulp pricing declines in the current quarter driven by elevated global market pulp producer inventory levels and weak global softwood pulp demand.

Canfor Pulp’s Northwood Pulp Mill Resuming Production after BC Port Strike Ends

Canfor Pulp Products said that production will resume at its Northwood Pulp Mill in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada, this week.

On July 13, Canfor Pulp curtailed production at the Northwood Pulp Mill due to limited storage space for pulp products that could not be transported overseas as a result of the labour dispute at B.C. ports.

The downtime could have reduced the mill’s production capacity by about 11,000 tonnes of market kraft pulp per week.

Canfor Pulp Temporarily Curtailing Northwood Pulp Mill Due to Ongoing Labour Dispute at B.C. Ports

Canfor Pulp Products is announcing the curtailment of its Northwood Pulp Mill in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada, effective July 13, 2023.

The curtailment is due to limited storage space for pulp products that cannot be transported overseas as a result of the ongoing labour dispute at B.C. ports.

The downtime is expected to remain in place for the duration of the labour dispute and will remove approximately 11,000 tonnes of market kraft pulp per week.

Western Forest Products announces temporary production curtailments in British Columbia

Western Forest Products Inc. recently announced plans to temporarily reduce its lumber production over the next month by approximately 19 million board feet due to weak market conditions.

The temporary reduction in lumber production will be spread across certain sawmills in the Company’s British Columbia manufacturing platform through the remainder of June and into early July. Remanufacturing and shipping operations will continue uninterrupted. Lumber production at impacted sites is expected to resume in mid-July  depending on market conditions and available log supply.
