West Fraser Timber and Atlas Holdings recently announced the signing of a definitive agreement for the sale of West Fraser’s Quesnel River Pulp mill in Quesnel, British Columbia and its Slave Lake Pulp mill in Slave Lake, Alberta to Atlas. Mitsubishi HiTec Paper announces price increase for thermal papers

As of 1.10.2023 Mitsubishi HiTec Paper will increase the prices for thermoscript thermal papers by up to 10%.

The aim is in particular to counteract the price decline of recent months, which has had varying effects in the different regions and application areas, while costs remain at a high level.

UK food market first as Mondi launches new recyclable paper-based packaging with Veetee

Sandra Sundbäck leaves the job as CEO of Paper Province

On 1 January 2024, Sandra Sundbäck will take on a new assignment where she will continue to develop the business sector – as the new CEO of the Chamber of Commerce in Värmland.

Sandra Sundbäck has been the leader of Paper Province since 2020. Now, she takes her commitment and network further to the Chamber of Commerce to drive business issues in an even broader context. The recruitment of a new CEO for Paper Province will start immediately.

“Sandra has achieved a lot during these years. She joined the cluster organisation in a phase when Paper Province faced a strategic choice. With energy and commitment, together with the staff and the board, she started the change journey in an exemplary way. This means that we now have a clear direction forward and great conditions for her successor to continue leading that work,” says Anders Brolin, chairman of Paper Province’s board.

Kipas Kagit orders order two forming fabric cleaners from ProJet

ProJet received an order for 2 Forming Fabric Cleaners (ProCleanersTM) from Kipas Kagit Paper for their Paper Machine # 1 in Turkey. The order was received in September 2023 and the value of the order will not be disclosed. Delivery will be in Q2 of 2024.

PM1 produces Fluting and Testliner on a 8.6 meter wide machine, using 100% OCC. OCC is known for its extreme contamination on the Paper Machine Clothing. The ProCleanerTM with the “ProPlusModeTM” is highly effective in maintaining cleanliness and permeability of Forming Fabrics which is exactly the reason that Kipas Kagit continues to choose for ProJet. The “۲.۰” head is equipped with more nozzles for continuous cleaning and enhanced cleaning during sheet breaks, the “ProPlusModeTM”. Cleaning water and contamination is effectively evacuated by a vacuum system.

The environmental impact assessment procedure for Kaskinen paperboard mill project completed

The South Ostrobothnia Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment issued its statement on the EIA report for the Kaskinen paperboard mill of Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, on 22 September 2023. This concludes the mill project’s environmental impact assessment procedure.

The results of the impact assessment will be considered in the ongoing planning and decision-making process. The EIA process does not make decisions on the project but aims to provide information to support decision-making and to increase public access to information and influence.

Metsä Board started pre-engineering for the new paperboard mill in Kaskinen in autumn 2022. The pre-engineering is based on fossil free production and world-class resource, production and environmental efficiency. Metsä Board estimates that a possible investment decision can be made in 2024 at the earliest.

PulPac launches the world’s first injection molding machine for fiber-based products

PulPac makes good on its promise to make Dry Molded Fiber more accessible to people worldwide. With the launch of a new machine platform, the PulPac Scala, the company takes a significant step in the Dry Molded Fiber revolution. Sappi’s Kirkniemi paper mill switches to bioenergy

Sappi Europe’s Kirkniemi Mill in Lohja, Finland, has successfully made the switch from using fossil fuels to renewable energy to fuel the production of the Galerie paper range. A €۱۶.۵ million investment into state-of-the-art facilities and machinery for the reception, storage and handling of biofuels is the latest in a string of efforts by Sappi in meeting its Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)-approved emissions reduction goal across all its regions.

The official inauguration of the new facilities for reception, storage and handling of biofuels on August 30, 2023, was attended by Kai Mykkänen, the Finnish Minister for Climate and the Environment, who spoke about how the multiple environmental investments by Sappi at Kirkniemi fit with Finland’s ambitious goals for carbon neutrality and leadership in the new energy sector.

Valmet has signed a EUR 175 million loan with EIB

Valmet has signed a EUR 175 million loan agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB). The loan will support Valmet’s Research and Development (R&D) activities to help finance technologies that replace fossil fuels with renewables. The loan agreement is linked to company’s R&D activities in 2023-2026.

The financing aims to enhance the resource and energy efficiency as well as the performance of Valmet’s technology, promote the use of recyclable raw materials and to improve the sustainability of Valmet’s operations. The financing is part of the EIB’s dedicated package of support to REPowerEU – the EU plan to eliminate dependence on fossil fuel imports.

Valmet to Supply a Fine Paper Making Line to Yueyang Forest Paper in China

Valmet will supply a high-capacity fine paper making line with automation, spare parts and consumables packages to Yueyang Forest Paper in China. The delivery is scheduled for the third quarter 2024.

The value of the order will not be disclosed.

The paper machine, with a 11,150 mm wide fabric, will produce woodfree uncoated, offset, and copy paper grades with the basis weight range of 50-120 g/m2. The design speed of the machine will be 1,800 m/min.

“Valmet has been in China for 90 years, witnessed the rapid and healthy development of China’s pulp and paper industry and participated in it. Therefore, we have a strong connection with Yueyang Forest Paper,” said Xiangdong Zhu, Area President, China, Valmet.

Xin Shun Cui joins BTG as new President

Andritz starts up extra-wide carding machine for Italian nonwovens producer

The international technology group, Andritz, has achieved a successful startup of the newly delivered carding machine and opening/blending line at Albis in Roasio, Vercelli, Italy. This strategic investment marks a significant milestone for Albis as it positions itself to address evolving market demands and manufacture innovative nonwoven products tailored for applications in hygiene and medical sectors.

The newly installed machine, boasting an impressive working width of 5.10 meters, enables the production of customized nonwoven fabrics designed to meet precise customer specifications while upholding exceptional properties and consistent quality standards. A prime example is the Albis Curacell®, a multilayer composite nonwoven fabric with a weight range spanning 35 to 70 gsm. This remarkable material is crafted using a patented water-free process and possesses the remarkable ability to absorb liquid flows exceeding seven times its weight. Obbola paper mill inaugurated: Increased capacity for better business and increased climate benefit

“This marks a significant stride in enhancing the competitiveness of SCA and Obbola, empowering us to better serve a market that is transitioning away from fossil packaging materials,” notes Gustaf Nygren, Mill manager at SCA Obbola.

The capacity for kraftliner production is poised for a notable increase, soaring from 450,000 tons to an impressive 725,000 tons annually. The standout transformation at the facility is the addition of the world’s largest machine, courtesy of German company Voith, specifically designed for kraftliner production. This colossal machine spans an impressive 250 meters in length and boasts an estimated weight of approximately 11,000 tonnes.

As part of this ambitious project, involving an investment of approximately SEK 7.5 billion, several enhancements have been implemented. These encompass improvements in the work environment, the installation of a high-capacity recycled fiber line, and the introduction of a brand-new lime kiln.

Heinzel Group postpones rebuild of PM 11 at its Laakirchen plant

Austrian paper producer Heinzel will continue to produce SC Paper on PM 11 at its Laakirchen mill in Austria until the first quarter of next year and then start the planned the rebuild of the machine. The postponement to September 2024 enables Heinzel to serve its SC paper customers for two more quarters. According to the company, this solution is the the best course of action in view of the current situation.

Originally, the restart was planned for Q2 2024.

With the conversion to packaging papers, the capacity of the rebuilt production line will be increased from 350,000 tpy of SC paper to 500,000 tpy of recycled fluting and testliner.

New TMP Line at Norske Skog Skogn

At the beginning of the year, Norske Skog announced plans for a significant investment in a new TMP (thermomechanical pulping) line at the Skogn mill.

A TMP line, in simple terms, consists of several refiners that turn wood chips into wood fibres using pressure and energy. After the wood fibres have been diluted with water and washed, they are ready to be stored in towers before they go to the paper machine and become high-quality newsprint paper.

The new TMP line replaces recycled fibres. The availability of recycled fibres has declined in recent years while procurement and transportation costs have increased.
