Valmet to Supply a Fine Paper Making Line to Yueyang Forest Paper in China

Valmet will supply a high-capacity fine paper making line with automation, spare parts and consumables packages to Yueyang Forest Paper in China. The delivery is scheduled for the third quarter 2024.

The value of the order will not be disclosed.

The paper machine, with a 11,150 mm wide fabric, will produce woodfree uncoated, offset, and copy paper grades with the basis weight range of 50-120 g/m2. The design speed of the machine will be 1,800 m/min.

“Valmet has been in China for 90 years, witnessed the rapid and healthy development of China’s pulp and paper industry and participated in it. Therefore, we have a strong connection with Yueyang Forest Paper,” said Xiangdong Zhu, Area President, China, Valmet.

Metsä Board’s Kemi mill increases white kraftliner production capacity to 465,000 tonnes

The development programme for Metsä Board’s white kraftliner mill in Kemi has been completed in parallel with Metsä Fibre’s new bioproduct mill. Metsä Board and Metsä Fibre are part of Metsä Group. In addition to increasing the mill’s capacity by 40,000 tonnes per year, the development programme will reduce the mill’s energy consumption by 5% and water consumption by around 40% per tonne produced.

The Kemi paperboard mill is the world’s largest producer of coated white top kraftliner and its products are used as a surface material for corrugated packaging worldwide. The development programme will increase Kemi’s annual production capacity of white kraftliners to 465,000 tonnes, with the majority being sold in Europe and North America.

Xin Shun Cui joins BTG as new President

BTG, a leading global supplier of integrated process solutions for the pulp and paper industry, is pleased to announce the appointment of Xin Shun Cui as the new President and CEO of the BTG  Group. Andritz starts up extra-wide carding machine for Italian nonwovens producer

The international technology group, Andritz, has achieved a successful startup of the newly delivered carding machine and opening/blending line at Albis in Roasio, Vercelli, Italy. UPM Specialty Papers now offers compostable label face papers for fruit and vegetable stickers

UPM Specialty Papers now offers a compostable solution for paper-based food stickers. UPM LabelCoatTM and UPM LabelCoatTM Prime label face papers are certified as both industrially and home compostable, helping customers and brand owners meet EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation proposal (PPWR) requirements.

PPWR aims to ensure that all packaging in the EU must be reusable or recyclable by 2030. It also sets out the requirements that sticky labels attached to fruits and vegetables need to be compostable in industrially controlled conditions.

“We are happy to provide a compostable solution, which helps our customers to meet this regulatory change as well as their sustainability targets,” says Juhani Ylikoski, Sales Director at UPM Specialty Papers.

In addition to fruit stickers, UPM LabelCoatTM and UPM LabelCoatTM Prime can be used for a variety of other pressure-sensitive labelling applications.

Georgia-Pacific to close Foley cellulose facility

Georgia-Pacific informed employees at its Foley Cellulose mill in Perry, Florida, that the company plans to permanently close the facility.

All the approximately 525 jobs at the mill will be impacted by this closure.

The Foley mill produces specialty and fluff pulp.

According to Georgia-Pacific, various factors influenced this difficult decision. Ultimately, GP does not believe that the mill can competitively serve its customers in the long term despite the significant investments and commitment by GP Cellulose since the site was acquired in 2013.

Weyerhaeuser announces approval of first forest carbon project

Weyerhaeuser Company recently announced it has received approval from the American Carbon Registry for its Improved Forest Management (IFM) carbon credit project in Maine. Covering approximately 50,000 acres and verified through a third-party auditor, the Kibby Skinner IFM Project is the first issuance of credits for Weyerhaeuser through the voluntary carbon market. The project has an estimated initial credit issuance of nearly 32,000 mtCO2e, with one credit equal to one metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent. Over the lifetime of the project, it is expected to generate 475,000 credits.

Weyerhaeuser is currently in the early stages of developing several IFM projects on select areas within its 11-million-acre land base in the U.S., including two in the South slated for completion in late 2023 or early 2024. As it develops these projects, the company is working with experts at Carbon Direct to ensure that all credits offered will generate real, additional carbon absorbed and stored in project areas.

Total U.S. Printing-Writing Paper Shipments Decreased 20 Percent in August 2023

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has released the August 2023 Printing-Writing Monthly report. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 20% in August compared to August 2022.

U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers decreased 33% in July compared to the same month last year.

Total printing-writing paper inventory levels decreased 5% when compared to July 2023.

Hans Sohlström appointed new CEO of Stora Enso

The Board of Directors of Stora Enso Oyj has appointed Hans Sohlström (58), M.Sc. (tech.) and M.Sc. (econ.), as the new President and CEO of Stora Enso as of today. Hans Sohlström is currently a member of Stora Enso’s Board of Directors from which position he is stepping down today. Stora Enso’s Board of Directors will now have eight members.

Hans Sohlström has over 30 years of experience in business leadership, including over 10 years as CEO predominantly in the forest and renewable materials industries. Most recently he led Ahlstrom Corporation, Ahlström Capital and Rettig Group. Prior to that, for over 20 years, he held several leadership positions at UPM-Kymmene Corporation, such as Mill Director, Business Unit Vice President and was a member of the Group Executive Team responsible for Marketing, New Businesses and Biofuels, and Corporate Relations and Development.

Moelven challenges innovators to find sustainable packaging

Moelven Wood and Paper Province are working together to find a sustainable packaging solution to replace the fossil-based plastics that currently surround Moelven’s interior panels. To do so, they invite to an international innovation competition.

To contribute to the annual reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by five percent, Moelven seeks a sustainable solution through an international BioBoosters innovation challenge. They now invite startups, companies, innovators, and researchers to propose a smart packaging solution for their wood-based interior panels.

Moelven is a Scandinavian industrial group that produces building products and systems for the construction industry. Among their products are wood panels for indoor use, which can be found in several of the country’s major DIY retail chains.

Valmet ranked as the most attractive employer in Finland among engineering professionals

Valmet has been ranked as the most attractive employer among engineering professionals in Finland according to a new study by Universum. The ranking was published in Universum’s annual survey, which is the biggest employer attractiveness survey in Finland. Earlier this year, Valmet was ranked as the second most attractive employer among engineering students in Finland.

 

Being recognized as the most attractive employer among engineering professionals is a great achievement for Valmet in Finland, but according to Macharey, the work done in other 40 operating countries carries equal weight.

Mondi puts the fizz into Coca-Cola HBC Austria’s functional packaging solution

Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, is delighted to launch a new more sustainable sleeve packaging, created to replace conventional plastic shrink wrap around 1.5 litre sparkling soft drink multipacks produced by Coca-Cola HBC in Austria and keep them secure. Sofidel Investing $185 Million to Increase Capacity of Its Circleville, Ohio Tissue Mill

Sofidel announced that it is investing $185 million to increase production capacity at its tissue mill in Circleville, Ohio. The project involves the construction of a new building that will house a new Valmet DCT 200 tissue machine. The new machine will have the capacity to produce 70,000 metric tons per year.

The Circleville plant, which started-up in October of 2018, currently operates two Valmet Advantage NTT tissue machines. Each machine has the capacity to produce 70,000 metric tons per year.

Smurfit Kappa and Westrock merger deal would create the largest containerboard producer in the world

Smurfit Kappa Group CEO Tony Smurfit said that the combination of Smurfit Kappa and WestRock is a promising and complementary deal.

The two companies signed a definitive agreement to combine in what would create a $34 billion company with 23 million tons of mill capacity and 500 converting plants focused on containerboard, as well as a large consumer packaging business. The combined companies would be the largest containerboard and boxmaking company in the world.

If the deal is finalized, the new combined company is to be called Smurfit WestRock.

“(This) combination has a lot of merit,” said Smurfit from Ireland on Sept. 12.

Liquid-cooled drives: turning a new page for pulp and paper

The pulp and paper industry has long used variable speed drives (VSDs) to achieve greater energy efficiency and precise motor control. However, some places within a mill present challenges for air-cooled VSDs.

In some cases, especially in older mills, dust regularly clogs the air intakes, or corrosive gas damages them. In others, the heat given off by the drive during operation is undesirable.  Meanwhile, the larger footprint of an air-cooled VSD may be an issue for facilities with limited floor space.

Sweden Says Back-To-Basics Schooling Works on Paper

Since young children went back to school across Sweden recently, many of their teachers have been putting a new emphasis on printed books, quiet reading time and handwriting practice, and devoting less time to tablets, independent online research and keyboarding skills.

The return to more traditional ways of learning is a response to politicians and experts questioning whether Sweden’s hyper-digitalised approach to education, including the introduction of tablets in nursery schools, had led to a decline in basic skills.

Sweden’s minister for schools, Lotta Edholm, who took office 11 months ago as part of a centre-right coalition government, was one of the biggest critics of the all-out embrace of technology.

Georgia-based Pratt Industries Plans New Manufacturing Facility in Peach County

Governor Brian P. Kemp announced that Pratt Industries, Inc., a Georgia-based recycled paper and packaging company, will build a new production facility in the portion of Warner Robins located in Peach County.

The new location will create more than 125 jobs and over $120 million in investment.“We’re proud of great Georgia-based companies like Pratt Industries and grateful for their continued growth here in the No. 1 state for business,” said Governor Brian Kemp. “Expansions like this account for more than 70 percent of last year’s economic development projects and are a testament to our business-friendly and partnership approach as we bring more opportunity for hardworking Georgians.”Based in Atlanta, Pratt Industries is the fifth-largest corrugated packaging company in the United States and the largest privately owned producer of 100 percent recycled containerboard in the world.

“We’re very honored to be coming to Warner Robins and we’re committed to the great State of Georgia – in fact, Georgia is where our company began,” said Anthony Pratt, Global Executive Chairman for Pratt Industries. “This will bring Pratt’s total workforce in Georgia to over 2,100 employees and 11,700 nationwide.”
