Cardway Cartons Installs BOBST Folder-Gluer at Alsager Facility in the UK

Staffordshire-based designer and manufacturer of corrugated packaging, Cardway Cartons Ltd, has boosted production capacity and expanded its offering with the installation of the BOBST EXPERTFOLD 165 at its 55,000 sq ft Alsager facility.

Installed earlier this year, the EXPERTFOLD 165 offers exceptional reliability and folding precision and is ideally suited to the demands of modern high-speed, high-output packing lines.

Bracell Begins Site Work for New Tissue Mill in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Bracell recently announced the start of civil works for the largest tissue mill in Latin America. The unit is being built next to Bracell’s pulp mill in Lencois Paulista (SP). In all, the company is investing R$ 5 billion in the city, R$ 2.5 billion of which in the construction of the tissue mill, which is expected to start operating in 2024, and the other half of the amount for investment in a plant production of sodium chlorate and hydrogen peroxide, chemical components used in the pulp production process.

Billerud Sees Lower Second Quarter Result than Current Market Expectations

Billerud expects the EBITDA for the 2023 second quarter to be SEK 100-200 million. The lower result is mainly due to significantly lower sales volume and revaluation of finished goods inventory. Billerud also announces a raised ambition for its efficiency program and a changed financial reporting structure.

Norske Skog Bruck is Now Producing Strato Testliner and Strato Fluting on PM 3

Norske Skog announced that the newly converted paper machine, PM 3, at Bruck Mill in Styria, Austria, is now producing Strato Testliner and Fluting.

Norske Skog said PM 3 ‘Emma’ produced her first reel of recycled containerboard at the end of May following a conversion that not only transformed the paper machine, but the entire site of Norske Skog Bruck. The project included the installation of a new multifuel boiler, the construction of a new OCC plant, and an expansion of the facility’s wastewater treatment plant.

Stora Enso is planning to restructure actions to strengthen the Group’s long-term competitiveness, improve profitability and focus capital allocation in strategic growth markets. Stora Enso is also taking the next step in driving a decentralised operating model targeting increased customer centricity, business focus and cost reductions.

The planned restructuring actions, combined with previously initiated negotiations in the Packaging Materials division, would result in total reductions of approximately 1,150 employees.

Kadant starts up OCC systems for Shandong Hechuang Paper in China and Lee & Man in Malaysia

Kadant Fiberline (China) Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Kadant Inc., started up new fiber processing lines at Shandong Hechuang Paper’s facility in Linyi, China, and Lee & Man’s mill in Malaysia.

The new system installed at Shandong Hechuang Paper is a 650 BDMT per day OCC line designed to efficiently produce high-quality containerboard. The new pulping system for Lee & Man’s PM26 in Malaysia features Kadant Foundations fiber processing product line with advanced technologies enabling the mill to yield high quality stock with reduced energy consumption. It is the fourth recycled containerboard machine installed at the facility using Kadant’s fiber process technologies.

Suzano makes a 4 per cent cut in pulp production

Brazilian company Suzano (SUZB3) has announced a 4 percent reduction in market pulp production volume for 2023 compared to its nominal capacity and historical volumes.

According to the company, this move is based on the fact that this volume production would not bring adequate returns for the company during a more complex pulp market period.

Essity to Sell Its Operations in Russia

Essity has signed an agreement with a buyer and the transaction has been approved by the Russian authorities, it said, adding that the deal was expected to be finalised during the second quarter of 2023.

The world’s second-biggest consumer tissue maker began work on exiting the Russian market in April, after taking a writedown of about 1.7 billion crowns ($157.25 million) on its assets in the country, the statement added.

Huhtamaki to close packaging production facility in Prague, Czech Republic

Huhtamaki has made the decision to consolidate the production footprint of its Flexible Packaging segment in Europe and will be closing its Flexible Packaging production facility in Prague, Czech Republic. All production and supporting activities at the facility will be scaled down during the second half of the year, with the closure of the operations completed by March 31, 2024. Production will gradually be transferred to Huhtamaki’s other manufacturing sites. The decision affects all 198 employees in the site.

Valmet introduces Valmet Brown Stock Analyzer for high yield and brown pulp

Valmet has developed Valmet Brown Stock Analyzer to complement its online pulp quality analyzer family. The analyzer provides high analysis frequency for digester and brown stock washing control in kraft pulping. It is the most robust Kappa measurement for high yield and brown pulp, designed to measure the coarsest pulp starting from cooking blow line.

The pulp sample handling principle minimizes water consumption, ensuring effective opera­tion even with high shive content pulps. A low number of moving and wearing parts minimizes the need for maintenance.

Valmet to Supply Ahlstrom’s Aspa Mill with IQ Web Inspection System

Valmet will supply a Valmet IQ Web Inspection System for pulp dirt count to Ahlstrom’s Aspa mill in Sweden. The dirt measurement will cover the full width of production.

According to Valmet, the target is to improve the line efficiency of pulp drying and to achieve high quality of the pulp.

Valmet’s delivery is scheduled for October 2023.

Voith to rebuild PM 4 at DS Smith mill in Portugal

DS Smith has commissioned Voith to rebuild its PM 4 at the company’s Viana site in Northern Portugal. Producing around of 400,000 tons of kraftliner and high-performance top kraftliner per year, the mill is a market leader in Southern Europe. The extensive rebuild will increase production and improve overall efficiency. Production will expand to around 428,000 tons per year with a machine design speed of 1,100 m/min. Elopak to build new manufacturing plant in US

Elopak has announced that it will build a new plant in the USA to better serve its customers in the Americas and accelerate growth in the region.

Elopak will invest around $50 million (including lease liability) in the new plant over the period 2023 – ۲۰۲۴. The investment will be financed by utilizing Elopak’s existing Revolving Credit Facility. The plant is expected to commence production in the fourth quarter of 2024 and will create more than 100 new jobs.
