The 8th Paper Week Symposium in Izmir, Çeşme an unprecedented success

The 8th Paper Week Symposium in Izmir, Çeşme, held from 18-20 September 2023, was an unprecedented success, bringing together paper industry experts from around the world. The event saw over 200 distinguished participants from 27 countries establish connections, strengthen cooperation and exchange fundamentally important information on the state and prospects of the international paper industry.

For three engaging days, paper business leaders from different corners of the world came together for a unique blend of negotiations, entertainments and friendship. The Symposium served as a hub for sharing knowledge, exploring innovations and cultivating long-term relations.

Metsä Board’s Kemi mill increases white kraftliner production capacity to 465,000 tonnes

The development programme for Metsä Board’s white kraftliner mill in Kemi has been completed in parallel with Metsä Fibre’s new bioproduct mill. Metsä Board and Metsä Fibre are part of Metsä Group. In addition to increasing the mill’s capacity by 40,000 tonnes per year, the development programme will reduce the mill’s energy consumption by 5% and water consumption by around 40% per tonne produced.

The Kemi paperboard mill is the world’s largest producer of coated white top kraftliner and its products are used as a surface material for corrugated packaging worldwide. The development programme will increase Kemi’s annual production capacity of white kraftliners to 465,000 tonnes, with the majority being sold in Europe and North America.

Mondi puts the fizz into Coca-Cola HBC Austria’s functional packaging solution

Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, is delighted to launch a new more sustainable sleeve packaging, created to replace conventional plastic shrink wrap around 1.5 litre sparkling soft drink multipacks produced by Coca-Cola HBC in Austria and keep them secure. Mondi’s Hug-IT, which keeps six bottles together during transportation, is made of Mondi’s Advantage SpringPack Plus, crowned by Guinness World Records as the strongest paper in the world.

The Hug-IT sleeve has high tensile strength and incomparable stretchability, so it can be trusted to wrap around the six bottles tightly, keeping them upright and held together during transit – from factory site, to retailer, to the consumer’s home. It will secure 1.5-liter PET multi-packs of the Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite and Mezzo Mix brands and will be sold in retail outlets throughout Austria. Lessebo Paper signs new agreement with Swedish company Addbrand

Lessebo Paper, one of the world’s most environmentally friendly boutique paper mills, now enters into a new wholesale agreement with the Swedish company Addbrand, a graphic reseller in the Nordics for graphic products and services.

Lessebo Paper, one of the world’s most environmentally friendly boutique paper mills, has inked a new wholesale contract with the Swedish firm Addbrand, a distributor specialising in selling graphic products and services aimed at printers, branding companies, and packaging producers in the Nordic graphic intermediary sector.

During 2022, Lessebo Paper launched Lessebo Colours, a new series of environmentally friendly papers in a palette consisting of 48 carefully curated shades, specially designed to create high-quality packaging, for maximum expression with minimal footprint.

Smurfit Kappa and Westrock merger deal would create the largest containerboard producer in the world

Smurfit Kappa Group CEO Tony Smurfit said that the combination of Smurfit Kappa and WestRock is a promising and complementary deal.

The two companies signed a definitive agreement to combine in what would create a $34 billion company with 23 million tons of mill capacity and 500 converting plants focused on containerboard, as well as a large consumer packaging business. The combined companies would be the largest containerboard and boxmaking company in the world.

If the deal is finalized, the new combined company is to be called Smurfit WestRock.

“(This) combination has a lot of merit,” said Smurfit from Ireland on Sept. 12.

Sonoco completes acquisition of RTS Packaging

Sonoco Products Company announced the completion of its acquisition of the remaining equity interest in RTS Packaging, LLC from joint venture partner WestRock and one WestRock paper mill in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The acquisition will further strengthen and expand Sonoco’s 100% recycled fiber-based packaging solutions to serve growing consumer wine, spirits, food, beauty and healthcare markets. Prior to closing the transaction, Sonoco was a 35% owner in the joint venture with WestRock.

With this acquisition, Sonoco adds a network of 15 operations and 1,100 employees in the U.S., Mexico, and South America. The purchase price for this acquisition was $۳۳۰ million, subject to customary price adjustments. The Company funded the acquisition with borrowings under its existing credit facilities and cash on hand. After the transaction, the Company’s net debt to adjusted EBITDA ratio is less than 2.9x. The acquisition is expected to be immediately accretive to earnings per share, excluding the impact of purchase accounting adjustments.

Founded in 1899, Sonoco is a global provider of packaging products.

Visa Moilanen has been appointed as Head of Pulp & Paper, Process Industries Division at AFRY.

Visa has a strong background in the Pulp & Paper sector globally and he has been working for AFRY (previously Pöyry) also earlier in several roles. He has held many leading positions within the industry, and he knows well global markets having strong experience for example, in Singapore, France, Germany and Finland.

Visa will coordinate the Global Pulp & Paper business sector sales and key accounts, competence development and ensure that our Pulp & Paper sector clients get the best possible competencies and the latest technology know-how.

Labelexpo Global Series announces new Managing Director

Since joining the Labelexpo Global Series team in 2004, Grace has held a number of positions including event director and most recently, portfolio director before her promotion to managing director. She has been instrumental in the growth of Labelexpo Europe, and the portfolio in Asia, opening the India office and relaunching the Group’s presence in Southeast Asia.

Smurfit Kappa and WestRock in discussions regarding merger

Smurfit Kappa Group confirms that the boards of directors of Smurfit Kappa and WestRock Company are discussing the key terms of a potential combination to create Smurfit WestRock, a global leader in sustainable packaging.

The potential combination would be expected to involve the creation of a new holding company, Smurfit WestRock. Smurfit WestRock would be incorporated and domiciled in Ireland with global headquarters in Dublin, Ireland and North and South American operations headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The potential combination would be effected through an Irish scheme of arrangement involving Smurfit Kappa and a merger of a subsidiary with WestRock.

DS Smith divests four UK recycling depots to Veolia

DS Smith has carried out a strategic review of its UK recycling operations, with the sale of four depots to Veolia.

According to letsrecycle.com, the depots in Avonmouth, Birmingham, Bolton, and Leeds have now been sold to Veolia ES (UK) Limited. The fee has not been disclosed.

DS Smith has been in consultation over six of its recycling facilities since May 2023.

The sale is anticipated to include the baling equipment and other infrastructure. The future of DS Smith’s remaining recycling sites in the UK remains uncertain.

Daio Paper to reconstruct damaged boiler

Japanese Daio Paper Corp. will spend approximately 19 billion yen to reconstruct the boiler at its subsidiary, Iwaki Daio Paper Corp., based in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, according to a press release from the company.

The accident occurred on September 6, 2022.

Daio’s Board of Directors, at its meeting held recently, voted to approve a boiler reconstruction plan calling for  the adoption of recurrence-preventing measures addressing multiple presumed causes of the explosion based on the accident investigation report.

The Daio Group is working to realize, through business activities, its management philosophy, “Shaping an  abundant and affable future for the world.” In its business activities, the company will continue making efforts to ensure stability in product quality and reduce the environmental load through the effective use of natural resources while giving top priority to safety.

Stora Enso announces restructuring actions

Stora Enso has progressed with its restructuring actions, announced on 15 June 2023, aimed at strengthening the Group’s long-term competitiveness and creating a decentralised and more customer centric operating model. These actions would reduce the number of employees by approximately 1,150. The parts of the change negotiations completed so far, will result in a reduction of 710 employees.

Stora Enso has concluded the change negotiations at its Sunila site and decided to permanently close pulp production and lignin extraction. The Sunila site has an annual capacity of 375,000 tonnes of long fiber and 50,000 tonnes of lignin. Production at the site has been at a standstill since May and will not be ramped up. The closure will impact 240 employees. The pilot plant for bio-based battery material will, as previously communicated, continue its operations at the Sunila site.

Stora Enso has, during the third quarter permanently, closed down one of the four containerboard production lines at its Ostrołęka site in Poland. The production line had an annual capacity of 120,000 tonnes of recycled containerboard. The closure impacts 50 employees locally.

ANDRITZ to Deliver and Install New Shoe Press at Lee & Man Paper Mill in Malaysia

ANDRITZ has received the ninth order for a PrimePress X shoe press from Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Ltd.

According to ANDRITZ, the new shoe press will help the paper producer save energy and further improve paper quality at its Best Eternity Recycle Technology mill in Banting, Malaysia.

The newly ordered shoe press will be installed in PM26, a containerboard machine that runs at a design speed of 1,000 m/min and produces high-quality Testliner of 70 – 160 gsm basis weight.

The PrimePress X shoe press will replace the existing conventional third nip in the center roll-based concept.

Nordic Paper decides on strategic investments for Bäckhammar

The Board of Directors of Nordic Paper has today decided to invest approximately SEK 850 m at the Bäckhammar mill. The investment will further improve sustainability performance and strengthen the competitiveness of the plant. An important component of the investment is a new wood room providing for both strategic flexibility in raw material sourcing and efficiency gains in the production. The emissions of dust to air will be reduced by more than two thirds through an installation of a new electrostatic filter. The investments are expected to add about SEK 100 m annually to Nordic Paper EBITDA. Further, the investments set the foundation for future growth in production output.

 

The investments of today’s decision are approved under the current, existing, production permit. A new production permit was granted for the Bäckhammar mill on 31 January 2023. The new production permit was appealed by a third party and has as of today not gained legal force.

Mercer International Inaugurates New Lignin Center at Rosenthal Pulp Mill in Germany

Mercer International  inaugurated the Mercer Lignin Center, which is located on the site of Mercer’s Rosenthal pulp mill in Germany.

“Our focus is on the full utilization of wood resources,” said Juan Carlos Bueno, CEO of Mercer International. “It is therefore only logical to exploit the often untapped potential of lignin.”

Mercer Rosenthal produces kraft pulp and has an annual production capacity is 360,000 ADMTs. In addition, the mill operates the largest solid biomass-based power plant in Thuringia (a state of central Germany), with a thermal capacity of more than 400 megawatts and an electrical capacity of 57 megawatts. An important biobased by-product of mill’s pulp production is tall oil, which replaces fossil products in the chemical industry. Lignin joins the mill’s existing portfolio of bioproducts.

Saica Group acquires minority share of Pacapime in Belgium

Saica Group has reached an agreement to acquire a minority share of Pacapime, the Belgian corrugated cardboard company. Pacapime generated revenues of Euro 61 million in 2022, and provides direct employment to 109 people.

The company also shares Saica’s focus on sustainability, with a heavy use of recycled paper, its own solar panels that cover a third of its annual energy needs, and numerous water and energy efficiency measures in place.

One of Saica’s 2025 strategic priorities is focused on sustainable growth, developing its business model across Europe.

Moorim P&P, South Korea, invests in HERB recovery boiler from Andritz

Andritz has received an order for a new HERB recovery boiler including advanced digitalization solutions to be installed at Moorim P&P’s pulp and paper mill in Ulsan, South Korea.

The delivery will increase the economic and environmental sustainability of the mill’s operations.

The contract signed with power plant supplier SGC eTEC E&C includes the engineering and main equipment supply for the boiler, digitalization solutions (ANDRITZ autonomous recovery boiler solutions) for maximum use of the boiler’s potential, and an ash treatment system.

Replacing two existing boiler units, the new HERB boiler will enable more efficient chemical recovery from the black liquor at lower emissions. Together with a new steam turbine, it will also significantly increase the mill’s renewable energy production. Thus, the delivery will make mill operations more self-sufficient, economical and sustainable. HERB recovery boilers are part of ANDRITZ’s broad portfolio of sustainable products that the company keeps advancing and expanding.

This order is a result of a long-lasting cooperation – ANDRITZ has provided process upgrades to Moorim P&P’s boilers for several years. “Our collaboration with ANDRITZ has already brought valuable continuous improvements to our Ulsan mill,” says Kim Sangwoo, Executive Director, Moorim P&P.

“This order is taking our relationship with Moorim P&P to the next level. We at ANDRITZ are grateful for the trust placed in our team and our technology,” said Henrik Wikstedt, Vice President, Recovery Boilers at ANDRITZ.

Moorim P&P’s Ulsan mill produces bleached kraft pulp and different types of high-quality paper. Established in 2011, it is Korea’s first and only integrated pulp and paper mill.

Australia’s most advanced paper and cardboard recycling facility comes online

Visy recently unveiled a major $42.5 million upgrade to its paper recycling and remanufacturing campus in Coolaroo with Premier Daniel Andrews and Federal Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek.

The upgrade is part of Visy Executive Chairman Anthony Pratt’s commitment to invest $2 billion over the next decade to reduce landfill, cut emissions and create thousands of green collar Australian manufacturing jobs.

“This is a very important day for our company because we’re not only manufacturers,” said Pratt.

“We’re actually in the landfill avoidance business which is good for greenhouse gas reduction as well because as things decay in landfill they produce methane gas which is 84 times worse for climate change than carbon dioxide.
