Nippon Paper announces liquid-packaging carton price revision

Nippon Paper Industries Co has announced price revision for liquid-packaging cartons for milk and beverages.

Product subject to price revisions includes all liquid-packaging cartons.

The markup will be 10% or more.

Timing of implementation is deliveries from April 1, 2024.

In a press release, Nippon Paper states:

“We implemented a price revision in April 2023. Since then, production costs, including labor, energy and material prices, have increased significantly, logistics costs have risen sharply associated with the 2024 problem, and the cost of imported materials has deteriorated markedly, caused by the further rapid and persistent depreciation of the yen. The future outlook is therefore expected to remain uncertain.

“We have been working harder than ever to reduce fixed costs, review our operating structure, and improve logistics. However, it has become extremely difficult to absorb the recent cost increases solely through self-help efforts, and we have decided that we have no choice but to revise our prices again”.

New paper recycling plant to be built in South East Queensland, Australia

One of Australia’s biggest paper recycling facilities will be built in South East Queensland with plans to turn 220,000 tonnes of waste paper and cardboard from across Queensland and northern New South Wales into pulp annually for export.

The Albanese and Queensland Labor Governments have partnered with Brisbane-based national company AusWaste Recycling to build a $137 million waste paper recycling facility at Brendale.

The Australian Recycled Pulp and Paper Project (ARPPP) is supported by a joint investment of $40 million from the Commonwealth and state Labor governments through the Recycling Modernisation Fund. Industry is also playing a key role, contributing $97 million to the total project cost.

This project will support approximately 195 construction jobs and 58 ongoing jobs.

The ARPPP will process waste including used packaging, newspaper, coffee cups, milk cartons and office paper into value-added paper pulp for paper mills.

It will elevate Australia’s position in the global waste paper and cardboard recycling market and it will contribute to the achievement of Queensland’s waste recovery and recycling targets.

Construction of the ARPPP is expected to begin in mid 2024 and be completed in mid 2025.

Why printed receipts still matter

Printed receipts are important for consumers and retailers alike. Here’s why.

Holiday spending is expected to increase as much as 4 percent this year. That may not sound like much, but Americans are on track to spend a record $960 billion celebrating the December holidays. For retailers and consumers alike, printed receipts can help make the season brighter.

Traditionally, Black Friday heralds the start of the holiday season, but for many, holiday spending is already in full swing, and it won’t stop until January, after the last gifts have been opened and any returns have been made. And despite what some anti-receipt advocates say, consumers overwhelmingly prefer to receive printed receipts with their purchases instead of digital receipts.

“In our recent consumer survey, we found that 76 percent of folks want some form of a printed receipt, or at least the option to choose a printed receipt,” says Andrea Forehand, Domtar’s director of sales for thermal POS. “Skip the Slip legislation has come up twice in California, and we’ve been successful in lobbying to prevent that legislation from becoming law because people do want the choice.”

Metsä Board Husum folding boxboard capacity expansion starts up

The project to expand folding boxboard production capacity has been completed at the Husum integrated pulp and paperboard mill in Sweden. With the modernisation of the board machine 1 (BM1), the annual production capacity of folding boxboard (FBB) will be increased by 200,000 tons to reach 600,000 tons. Mondi collaborates with partners to replace PolyStyrene (EPS)

Expanded PolyStyrene (EPS) microplastics are widely recognised as a significant contributor to marine plastic pollution, making up over 40% of plastic debris on Asian beaches.1 Bans on EPS packaging have gained tremendous momentum recently, particularly in the European Union and the wider Caribbean region.2,3 Legislation banning the use of EPS packaging has also been introduced in Fiji, the Philippines, and regions in the United States, just to name a few.4,5,6

With the ongoing development of the United Nations Treaty on Plastic Pollution, governments from over 170 nations are working toward policy measures to combat the negative environmental impacts of hard-to-recycle plastics. The introduction of bans, levies, and increased disposal fees for EPS packaging materials will continue to be on trend for the foreseeable future, especially in regions lacking recycling infrastructure.

Corrugated packaging solutions are 100% recyclable and 100% compostable, making them the ideal packaging material. What’s more, Mondi’s corrugated packaging solutions include a wide portfolio of corrugated boxes made of recycled fibers. Paper-based packaging boasts an impressive 82.5% recycling rate in Europe, outperforming the combined recycling rates of all other packaging materials.7 The recycling value of corrugated packaging has enormous potential worldwide. Paper fiber can be recycled with good quality many times, keeping fibers in circulation.8,9

Higher wood fiber costs for pulpmills worldwide in 2023

Global pulp prices have fallen steadily since late 2022, when they reached record highs. The most significant decline has been for hardwood pulp, traded at a substantial discount to softwood pulp. Global pulp inventories were down during the summer, and there were signs that the market tightened, and pulp producers were starting to see opportunities to move prices upward in the fourth quarter of 2023 following almost 12 months of declining pulp prices.

Despite declines in pulp prices over the past year, wood fiber costs have not experienced the same downward trend. On the contrary, tighter residual supply resulting from lower lumber production has kept wood chip prices high in many markets.

4evergreen alliance moves from guidance to action at Annual Conference: “The Pathway to Circularity”

More than 150 people joined in Brussels and online to celebrate the 3-year anniversary of 4evergreen at a conference recognizing the alliance’s achievements so far and exploring how to maximize industry uptake of 4evergreen’s circularity toolbox.

“After three years of intense work, we have a set of resources that is open to everyone”, said Hans Wortman, 4evergreen Chair. “It is now the turn of companies, partners, and public authorities to use them and continue paving the way to Europe’s green future”.

With the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation being voted on the same week in the European Parliament, a highlight of the conference was a policy panel exploring how fiber-based packaging can continue to lead on sustainability and circularity in the new policy landscape.

“We are optimistic that, upon the adoption of the proposal for the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), we can collectively make it work. Acknowledging that we don’t possess all the solutions, our commitment is to stay engaged with the industry and environmental organizations. Together, we aim to identify economically efficient solutions that align with the sustainability expectations of consumers,” said Aurel Ciobanu Dordea, Director, European Commission, Directorate-General for Environment, Circular Economy.
