Runtech Systems receives repeat order for vacuum systems to Shanying Suzhou Paper, China

Runtech Systems delivers two RunEco vacuum systems to Shanying Suzhou Paper, at its site in Suzhou, Anhui Province, China. The delivery consists of 14 EP Turbo Blowers and parts for the concrete water separators. RunEco systems will provide vacuum for the two new linerboard machines PM71 and PM72 with design speed of 1,300 m/min and reel width of 8,600 mm. The total production capacity of the corrugating medium machines is around 800,000 tons per year.

Mondi’s TankerBox revolutionises sustainable shipping for Aromsa’s flavourful products

Industry-leading Turkish flavour company Aromsa, whose products include sauces, toppings, extracts and seasonings, was faced with a challenge. The company was fully committed to its sustainability strategy, but it had also started to work with a new customer who wanted to use stainless-steel containers for shipping. This would require an investment into approximately 250 stainless-steel containers, which is a costly packaging solution. In addition to high price, there are also the logistical costs of storage and maintenance, washing and sterilising the containers.

Walki Group inaugurates production line at its Valkeakoski plant

The next-generation production line in Walki’s Valkeakoski plant was officially inaugurated today with a festive ceremony that brought together customers and other stakeholders from various parts of the world.

The 13 MEUR investment – one of the most significant in Walki’s history – is an important step forward in the company’s strategy to transform materials towards a circular future.

“With this milestone investment, we are expanding our technology base to secure the recyclability of our fiber-based products to meet the strictest requirements of expected future regulations”, says Leif Frilund, President and CEO.

New Leaf Paper acquires Arnold Grummer’s

New Leaf Paper, Inc has acquired Arnold Grummer’s LLC. The Wisconsin-based company distributes nationwide as the preferred supplier of hand papermaking kits.

Arnold Grummer’s will remain in Wisconsin, with headquarters moving to New Leaf Paper in Appleton. Oversight of Arnold Grummer’s will move forward with Paul Bradshaw as President and Sabrina Schwietzer as Executive Vice President, both from New Leaf Paper, with transition support from Kim Grummer.

Shree Ajit Pulp and Paper invests in new headbox and refiners

Valmet has been selected to supply an OptiFlo Layering Fourdrinier headbox with Aqua layering technology, Valmet Conical Refiners Pro and Conflo to Shree Ajit Pulp and Paper Limited for their Unit 2 Mill at Vapi, Gujarat in India. The start-up is planned for the first quarter 2024.

Musser Biomass and Wood Products to invest $7.5 million in expansion project

Musser Biomass and Wood products, a division of family-owned and -operated Musser Lumber Company based in Virgina, US, will invest $7.5 million (€۶.8m) and create ten new jobs to expand its operation in Wythe County.

The expansion will more than double production of dried hardwood chips and sawdust the company supplies to composite decking manufacturers, plastic extrusion companies, and BBQ and heating wood pellet companies.

UPM Sells Recovered Paper Sorting Plant in Germany to Fisel Holding

UPM has signed an agreement on the sale of the recovered paper sorting plant ASK Kinsau in Germany to Fisel Holding GmbH & Co. KG, a recovered logistics and municipal waste disposal company.

The sale and purchase agreement includes the site and buildings. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

All employees of ASK Kinsau will be transferred to the new owner.

UPM Biomedicals’ FibDex Wound Dressing in Clinical Trials for Superficial Dermal Burns

UPM Biomedicals’ innovative wound dressing FibDex is undergoing a clinical investigation of performance and safety in patients with superficial dermal burns. The clinical investigation will be conducted by the Burn Centre of Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden, and is estimated to be completed in the beginning of the year 2025.

UPM Biomedicals has previously prepared all the required protocols and other documents and received the regulatory and ethical approvals. The clinical investigation has started with Fredrik Huss (MD, PhD, Assoc. Professor) as the principal investigator and is enrolling patients since May 2023.

DS Smith to install Europe’s largest FibreFlow drum pulper at Porcari paper mill in Italy

International technology group Andritz has received an order from DS Smith to supply a complete stock preparation line and an innovative reject treatment system for the mill in Porcari, Italy, that produces new packaging papers from 100% recycled paper. The stock preparation line includes Europe’s largest FibreFlow drum pulper.

The equipment provided by Andritz will be used on the new paper machine, due to start up mid-2025, that will provide a range of paper grades for the FMCG and e-commerce sectors serviced by DS Smith.

Metsä Fibre Says Kemi Mill Construction On Schedule; Testing, Trials Underway

Metsä Fibre said construction of its Kemi bioproduct mill is progressing on schedule. Mill test run and trials are currently underway, as is installation work.

Wood deliveries to the new mill began in April, transported by road and rail. The mill’s new electrified private track allows wood to be brought right up to the mill by electric locomotive. The first train carrying a wood load arrived at the mill on 21 April, 2023.

New EU Rules Risk Flood of New Plastic Packaging and Contradict Years of Progress to Curb Plastic in the EU

The EU is close to agreeing new rules around packaging and packaging waste, but amendments proposed to the Commission’s proposal risk flooding the market with millions of tonnes of new plastic and rolling back a decade of measures to curb plastic use, according to DS Smith, the FTSE 100 leader in sustainable packaging, paper products and recycling.

Amendments to the Commission’s proposal for a Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) are being debated by MEPs and Member States, and proposed changes include introducing mandatory reuse targets for all materials.

Albany International to Acquire Heimbach Group for EUR 153 Million

Albany International on June 14 announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire privately held Heimbach Group, a leading supplier of paper machine clothing, in an all cash transaction valued at approximately EUR 153 million, including the assumption of EUR 21 million net debt.

The transaction has been unanimously approved by the Albany Board of Directors and Heimbach’s shareholders, and is expected to close in the second half of 2023, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

Albany will fund the transaction with cash held outside the United States.

PaperWorks acquires The Standard Group in Louisville, Kentucky

PaperWorks Industries Inc. has completed the acquisition of The Standard Group. Founded in 1932, The Standard Group is a converter of custom printed paperboard packaging with a manufacturing location in Louisville, Kentucky.

By integrating The Standard Group’s folding carton facility in Louisville and welcoming 120 team members, PaperWorks will operate an integrated folding carton business including two mills and six converting facilities employing over 1,400 team members.

Rengo to achieve zero use of coal at manufacturing sites by 2027

The Rengo Group will achieve zero use of coal at manufacturing sites in Japan by 2027. Currently, the Paperboard Production Group’s Kanazu Mill and Marusan Paper Mfg. Co., Ltd. use a total of approximately 125,000 tons of coal each year. Kanazu Mill will convert to the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for fuel in 2026 and Marusan Paper Mfg. in 2027 to fully abolish the use of coal. This will move the Group significantly closer toward achieving the stated target for reduction in CO2 emissions derived from fossil energy.

The Group has also declared in Rengo Group Environment Action 2050 that it is taking on the challenge of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In addition to the plan for zero use of coal, the Group will implement further environmental countermeasures to achieve carbon neutrality.
