Södra Reports Lower Second Quarter Results on Weaker Market Conditions

Södra reported second quarter 2023 net sales of SEK 7,322 million (8,953). Operating profit totaled SEK 464 million (2,325), representing an operating margin of 6 percent (26). Return on capital employed was 13 percent (39) and the equity ratio was 61 percent.

During the quarter, the World-class Efficiency project achieved annual efficiency gains of SEK 500 million.

Mondi completes sale of Russian packaging converting plants

Following the announcement on 15 December 2022 of plans to sell three Russian packaging converting operations to the Gotek Group for a total consideration of RUB1.6bn, Mondi confirms that Gotek Group received all requisite approvals and the sale has now been closed.

Mondi has received net proceeds of €۳۰.4m from this disposal into its Austrian bank account.

However, the proposed disposal of Mondi Syktyvkar, Mondi’s most significant facility in Russia, is not connected with the disposal of the three packaging operations and is still pending as Mondi cancelled the sale of Mondi Syktyvkar to Augment at the start of June 2023.

The company’s Board remains committed to divest Syktyvkar and continues to assess all alternative divestment options.

The net proceeds from the sale of all of Mondi’s Russian assets will be distributed to shareholders as soon as reasonably practicable following receipt, once the company has completed the exit from Russia.

DS Smith to install Europe’s largest FibreFlow drum pulper at Porcari paper mill in Italy

International technology group Andritz has received an order from DS Smith to supply a complete stock preparation line and an innovative reject treatment system for the mill in Porcari, Italy, that produces new packaging papers from 100% recycled paper. The stock preparation line includes Europe’s largest FibreFlow drum pulper.

The equipment provided by Andritz will be used on the new paper machine, due to start up mid-2025, that will provide a range of paper grades for the FMCG and e-commerce sectors serviced by DS Smith.

Metsä Fibre Says Kemi Mill Construction On Schedule; Testing, Trials Underway

Metsä Fibre said construction of its Kemi bioproduct mill is progressing on schedule. Mill test run and trials are currently underway, as is installation work.

Wood deliveries to the new mill began in April, transported by road and rail. The mill’s new electrified private track allows wood to be brought right up to the mill by electric locomotive. The first train carrying a wood load arrived at the mill on 21 April, 2023.

New EU Rules Risk Flood of New Plastic Packaging and Contradict Years of Progress to Curb Plastic in the EU

The EU is close to agreeing new rules around packaging and packaging waste, but amendments proposed to the Commission’s proposal risk flooding the market with millions of tonnes of new plastic and rolling back a decade of measures to curb plastic use, according to DS Smith, the FTSE 100 leader in sustainable packaging, paper products and recycling.

Amendments to the Commission’s proposal for a Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) are being debated by MEPs and Member States, and proposed changes include introducing mandatory reuse targets for all materials.
