Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper acquires Thunder Bay mill from Resolute FP Canada

Atlas Holdings announces the closing of the previously announced acquisition of the pulp, newsprint and directory paper mill operations in Thunder Bay, Ontario from Resolute FP Canada Inc. by Atlas’ affiliate, Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper Inc.

Thunder Bay is a leading northern bleached softwood kraft and northern bleached hardwood kraft pulp, paper, newsprint and directory producer. The Mill has been a landmark in northwestern Ontario for more than a century. Kent Ramsay, who has served as General Manager of the Mill since 2019, has been named President of Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper.

Pixelle CEO Tim Hess to Step Down Due to Health Reasons; Ross Bushnell to Succeed Him

Pixelle Specialty Solutions today announced that Timothy Hess has decided to step down from his position as President and Chief Executive Officer for health reasons, effective August 7, 2023.

In addition, the Company’s Board of Directors announced that following a comprehensive search process, it has selected Ross Bushnell to succeed Hess as Pixelle’s President and Chief Executive Officer. Bushnell has been appointed to the Board of Directors, and Hess will be available to support a smooth transition and will continue serving on the Board.

Ross Bushnell joins Pixelle with more than 25 years of commercial and general management experience. Mr. Bushnell most recently served as President and CEO at Scholle IPN, a global leader in flexible packaging solutions with over $700 million in sales and 2,200 team members in 11 countries. At Scholle IPN, Mr. Bushnell led his team to achieve best-in-class revenue and EBITDA growth that resulted in the very successful acquisition of Scholle IPN by SIG in June of 2022. Since the transaction, Mr. Bushnell has served as President of the legacy Scholle IPN business and as a member of SIG’s Group Executive Board.

Graphic Packaging to acquire Bell Incorporated

Graphic Packaging Holding Company has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Bell Incorporated, a well-capitalized U.S. packaging provider. The proposed acquisition is expected to add approximately $200 million in sales, $30 million in Adjusted EBITDA and will support strategic priorities of increasing integration rates and expanding customers and categories. Annual synergies of approximately $10 million are expected within 24 months of closing. The transaction includes three well-capitalized packaging facilities in the Midwest that consume 95,000 tons of paperboard annually.

The transaction is expected to close in the Q4 2023, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

Mercer International announces temporary curtailment of its Celgar pulp mill

Mercer International Inc. recently announced the temporary curtailment of operations at its Celgar pulp mill located in Castlegar, BC, including wood acceptance. The curtailment is currently scheduled to become effective July 29, 2023, until August 28, 2023.

This temporary curtailment results from a significant loss of rail transport capacity resulting from the Vancouver port job action. The job action has led to a complete halt in railcar circulation, severely impacting the mill’s ability to transport pulp.

Valmet to Deliver Recovery Boiler Upgrade to Lecta’s Torraspapel Mill in Spain

Valmet will deliver a recovery boiler upgrade to Lecta Group’s Torraspapel combined pulp and paper mill in Zaragoza, Spain.

According to Valmet, the primary target of the upgrade is to increase the recovery boiler’s black liquor capacity. The upgrade will also reduce the mill’s emission levels and improve the water side of the boiler, hence enabling the capacity increase. The upgrade will take place during the mill’s annual shutdown in October 2023.

“The project will help Lecta to optimize the energy balance of Zaragoza mill as well as make progress in our medium-term decarbonization plan. It also contributes to eliminate a bottleneck for possible future growth in production and/or use of other eucalyptus species. Valmet has always been a reliable and trustworthy supplier for Lecta, with a high degree of technical capabilities in the pulp and paper areas,” says Primitivo Prados, Mill Manager at Torraspapel mill.

WestRock Announces Plans to Close Pulp and Paper Mill in Tacoma, Washington

WestRock today announced it will permanently cease operating its paper mill in Tacoma, Washington, and will conclude production by September 30, 2023.

WestRock is committed to improving its return on invested capital as well as maximizing the performance of its assets. The combination of high operating costs and the need for significant capital investment were the determining factors in the decision to cease operations at the mill.

Total U.S. Boxboard Production Decreased Eleven Percent in Q2 2023

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its Q2 2023 Boxboard report. According to the report, total boxboard production in Q2 decreased 11% compared to Q2 2022. The boxboard operating rate was 86.6%, down 7.6 points from Q2 2022.

Hood Container acquires Sustainable Printing LLC

Hood Container Corporation has acquired the corrugated packaging business of Dalton, Georgia based Sustainable Printing LLC. The transaction includes all printing, converting, and ancillary equipment located in Dalton. Hood will continue operating these assets in the current facility.

These assets complement Hood Container’s Southeastern footprint creating greater corrugated capacity and enhanced production capabilities in the Georgia and Tennessee region. This acquisition increases Hood Container’s digital print production footprint and will allow the company to continue expanding its corrugated converting capabilities.

Packaging Corporation of America 2Q net sales down to $2 billion

Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) reported Q2 2023 net income of $۲۰۳ million, or $۲.۲۴ per share, and net income of $۲۰۹ million, or $۲.۳۱ per share, excluding special items. Q2 net sales were $۲.۰ billion in 2023 and $۲.۲ billion in 2022.

Excluding special items, the ($.92) per share decrease in Q2 2023 earnings compared to the Q2 2022 was driven primarily by lower volumes in the Packaging ($.90) and Paper ($.07) segments, lower price and mix in the Packaging segment ($.47), higher depreciation expense ($.09), and higher other converting costs ($.03).

DS Smith announced a significant investment plan to be implemented in the next two years across its three packaging sites in Greece. COBAP completes PM1 modernization at mill in Brazil

Brazil’s COBAP completed the modernization process of its PM#1. Hergen has supplied a set of equipment for the modernization of the press section and the installation of a new drive concept for the drying section. The upgrade project provided by Hergen focused on increasing production capacity by increasing the dry content arriving to the drying section, enabling the machine to operate at 600 m/min in the future.

Valmet to supply winder to Gascogne Papier in France

Valmet will supply a new high-capacity winder to Gascogne Papier in France. The winder will be delivered for the paper machine PM 7 at their Mimizan site. The start-up of the machine is scheduled for 2025. The value of the order will not be disclosed.

Valmet’s delivery will include a high-capacity OptiWin two-drum compact winder that has a wide production range with different widths and diameters of shipping rolls. As a key solution for high-quality multi-roll winding, the winder is equipped with pro-active dual spreading.

Manitoba Government supports exploring greener technology at Canadian Kraft Paper Industries’ mill

The Manitoba government and the Community Economic Development Fund are partnering with Canadian Kraft Paper Industries Ltd. (CKP) to explore opportunities for transitioning to a greener economy in northern Manitoba, Natural Resources and Northern Development Minister Greg Nesbitt announced.

“Our government continues to invest in the north, creating and maintaining sustainable jobs,” said Nesbitt. “The use of forest biomass in the north can benefit both the environment and the local economy. It is a potential win-win that is well worth exploring further.”
