Rottneros extends partnership with Sting Bioeconomy

Rottneros is extending its commitment as an active partner in Sting Bioeconomy’s Industri Partner Program. The Industri Partner Program is a platform and catalyst for the crucial green transition aimed at creating a sustainable industry with reduced environmental and climate impact. A significant part of the program involves bringing together startups and industry partners with mutual interests.

“This is an incredibly important collaboration. We always strive to be at the forefront of environmental and sustainability efforts within the group. DS Smith launches global R&D centre

DS Smith recently announced the launch of our global Research & Development (R&D) and Innovation Centre, ‘R8’. The new facility is an industry-first and allows the company, its customers, and partners to accelerate the research and development of radically new packaging fulfillment solutions.

Located near Birmingham in the UK, the R8 facility includes a 4,000m2 pilot hall, four laboratories, conditioning chambers, an ideation and design studio, prototyping areas, and collaboration spaces. As well as being the home of our Group Innovation and R&D teams, it is intended to spearhead research in manufacturing, maximising on the growing demand for sustainable packaging, and the innovation needed to deliver it.

“Our customers are some of the world’s most iconic brands, so innovation and sustainability are high on their agenda. The R8 will facilitate the collaboration that we know is needed to solve some of the industry’s biggest challenges”, says Stefano Rossi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Packaging Division, DS Smith.

Andritz to rebuild Holmen paper machine for flexible production of book and packaging paper

Andritz will rebuild a paper machine at Holmen Paper’s Braviken mill in Sweden to provide maximum production flexibility.

Start-up is planned for autumn 2024.

This order follows Holmen Paper’s recent successful entry into the packaging market with an innovative lightweight corrugated board product. The rebuild of PM52 will enable Holmen Paper to increase the production of fluting for corrugated boxes. ANDRITZ will implement a sophisticated technology concept allowing to easily switch production between the different paper grades.

RYAM to temporarily idle production at its paperboard and high-yield pulp operations

Rayonier Advanced Materials (NYSE: RYAM) is announcing that in order to optimize inventory levels and address lower-than-anticipated demand, its Témiscaming Paperboard operation and one of its High-Yield Pulp lines will be idled for 3 weeks, beginning on October 7.

Customer orders will not be affected, the company said.

The Témiscaming mill, which is located in Quebec, Canada, produces high-purity cellulose, high-yield pulp, and coated paperboard. Its operations are powered by carbon-neutral hydroelectricity, and a renewable biomass power generation system on-site, which produces renewable energy for the Hydro Quebec grid.

The mill employs around 700 people.

RYAM is a global leader of cellulose-based technologies, including high purity cellulose specialties, a natural polymer commonly found in filters, food, pharmaceuticals, and other industrial applications. The Company also manufactures products for paper and packaging markets.

PT. Adiprima, PM1, awards order for 4 power cleaners for dryer fabrics to ProJet

ProJet received an order for a total 4 ProJet High Pressure Cleaners from PT. Adiprima Suparinta for their PM1. Adiprima PM3 already ordered 8 ProJet Cleaners for their PM3 in July of 2023. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The order was received in October 2023 and will delivered in Q1 2024.

The Cleaners will be supplied along with all auxiliary equipment, pumps, control panels, etc. All pumps are provided with redundant systems for maximum reliability. The new ProJet Power Cleaners will provide maximum cleanliness and permeability to the Dryer Section of PM1.

OptiCept enters agreement with a forestry company in Brazil

OptiCept Technologies has entered an agreement with a world-leading forestry company in Brazil. Cuttings will now be boosted with nutrients using a unique vacuum impregnation technology called OptiBoost. The focus is on treating high-yielding cutting clones and maximizing their use in production.

The collaboration was initiated in early 2023 when the company evaluated the method on selected clones. The results achieved motivated the Brazilian company to enter a long-term partnership with OptiCept Technologies and for the implementation of the OptiBoost technology for cuttings.

The OptiBoost technology is a symbiosis of two technologies. Vacuum impregnation and nanotechnology. Cuttings are impregnated with a functionalized nutrient solution based on the third generation of patented nanotechnology. The process is executed in a small vacuum chamber that can manage up to 15,000 cuttings per hour.

The OptiBoost vauum impregnation (VI) is done with the purpose to improve the rooting and growth of cuttings and thereby decreases losses of eucalyptus and tropical clone cuttings propagation.

Owner of AIP group to discuss progress achieved within the last 6 months

Mr. Reuswich, the owner of AIP group, and Top Management team visit the Advanced Industries Packaging plant in Achern, Germany, to discuss the progress achieved within the last 6 months since the acquisition and future strategy of AIP group development.

The visit also included a comprehensive tour of the production floor, led by the Plant Director, who provided insights into the plant’s current operational activities. This hands-on experience allowed the participants to gain a deeper understanding of the plant’s day-to-day operations and the dedication of the AIP team in delivering top-quality packaging solutions.

In addition to these activities, a highly productive meeting was held between the Works Council of the AIP plant in Achern and the Top Management team. This collaborative dialogue served as a testament to our commitment to fostering strong relationships with the company’s workforce, ensuring that their voices are heard and valued.

Smurfit Kappa inaugurates pioneering industrial water treatment plant in Serbia

Smurfit Kappa has inaugurated a pioneering purification and wastewater treatment plant in Belgrade, Serbia, the first of its kind in the country. The state-of-the-art plant is located on the site of Smurfit Kappa’s Belgrade paper mill, which was acquired in 2019.

The Group’s €۵ million investment in the plant enables it to purify water to the highest standards before it can be returned to the environment. Purified water can also be partially reused in the process, further reducing water consumption by up to 90%. This innovative treatment also reduces electricity usage and CO2 emissions by up to 80%.

The environmental impact assessment procedure for Kaskinen paperboard mill project completed

The South Ostrobothnia Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment issued its statement on the EIA report for the Kaskinen paperboard mill of Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, on 22 September 2023. This concludes the mill project’s environmental impact assessment procedure.

The results of the impact assessment will be considered in the ongoing planning and decision-making process. The EIA process does not make decisions on the project but aims to provide information to support decision-making and to increase public access to information and influence.

Metsä Board started pre-engineering for the new paperboard mill in Kaskinen in autumn 2022. The pre-engineering is based on fossil free production and world-class resource, production and environmental efficiency. Metsä Board estimates that a possible investment decision can be made in 2024 at the earliest.

Heinzel Group postpones rebuild of PM 11 at its Laakirchen plant

Austrian paper producer Heinzel will continue to produce SC Paper on PM 11 at its Laakirchen mill in Austria until the first quarter of next year and then start the planned the rebuild of the machine. The postponement to September 2024 enables Heinzel to serve its SC paper customers for two more quarters. According to the company, this solution is the the best course of action in view of the current situation.

Originally, the restart was planned for Q2 2024.

With the conversion to packaging papers, the capacity of the rebuilt production line will be increased from 350,000 tpy of SC paper to 500,000 tpy of recycled fluting and testliner.

UPM Specialty Papers now offers compostable label face papers for fruit and vegetable stickers

UPM Specialty Papers now offers a compostable solution for paper-based food stickers. UPM LabelCoatTM and UPM LabelCoatTM Prime label face papers are certified as both industrially and home compostable, helping customers and brand owners meet EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation proposal (PPWR) requirements.

PPWR aims to ensure that all packaging in the EU must be reusable or recyclable by 2030. It also sets out the requirements that sticky labels attached to fruits and vegetables need to be compostable in industrially controlled conditions.

“We are happy to provide a compostable solution, which helps our customers to meet this regulatory change as well as their sustainability targets,” says Juhani Ylikoski, Sales Director at UPM Specialty Papers.

In addition to fruit stickers, UPM LabelCoatTM and UPM LabelCoatTM Prime can be used for a variety of other pressure-sensitive labelling applications.
