Pulp Exports from Brazil Climb to USD 4.1 Billion in First Half 2023; China, North America Main Destinations

The Brazilian Tree Industry (Ibá) reported that for the first half of 2023, pulp exports from Brazil increased by 8.2%, totaling USD 4.1 billion, driven by sales to China and North America (United States and Canada). The balance generated by pulp exports to China increased by 25.4% and to North America by 19.9% in the first half of 2023.
The value of paper exports to North America also increased by 20.8%, reaching R$ 130.8 million between January and June, Ibá reports.
note: The paper segment includes: packaging and wrapping, printing and writing, tissue, newsprint, cardboard, and other grades.
In the first half of 2023, the increase in pulp exports to China positioned that country as the main destination for exports of pulp produced in Brazil, reaching USD 1.8 billion traded in the first six months of 2023, followed by Europe with USD 1 billion.

The owners of the former Verso Paper Luke Mill site in Western Maryland have prepared the property for redevelopment and are now selling the final two parcels, which include the 55-acre main mill site and the 85-acre Beryl Woodyard.
V Luke, LLC is a consortium of three investment firms which purchased the site in April, 2022 and have since conducted a successful internationally marketed sale of all machinery and equipment from the paper mill, repurposed all usable above-ground assets to other manufacturers and assured that the sites are cleared of all discoverable materials, old structures and debris. After an exhaustive above-ground hazardous materials survey, an environmental clean-up of the site along the north branch of the Potomac River is also underway.
The three investment firms which formed V Luke, LLC include CRG Equity, LLC, Rabin Worldwide and Big Shoulders Capital.
Three parcels have already been sold for alternate industrial use, including the 42-acre Savage Woodyard, a 15-acre parcel with a 200,000 square foot converting facility and a 15-acre multi-use parcel in Piedmont, MD.

Valmet has secured a contract to provide Mercer Rosenthal, a kraft pulp mill in Germany, with a Mill-Wide Optimization solution. This comprehensive solution involves a mill-wide production planning application, as well as change management services, designed to streamline decision-making and enhance production optimization across the fiber line, recovery line, and pulp dryer. Notably, the package includes a two-year performance agreement for ongoing remote support via the Valmet Performance Center, ensuring sustained results over the long term.
The order was integrated into Valmet’s second-quarter 2023 orders received, and the optimization solution is slated for delivery in the autumn of the same year. While the order’s exact value remains undisclosed, it marks a pivotal step towards refining Mercer Rosenthal’s operational efficiency.

The wood products company Koskisen will continue to develop Sawmill Industry’s production and has decided to invest in an eight-hectare log yard in connection with the new sawmill in Järvelä. The investment includes a log sorting yard and line with control rooms, as well as a stormwater treatment system. In addition, a new access route to the factory area, a gate environment, access control and a vehicle scale will be built.
The value of the investment is approximately EUR 15 million and the majority of it will be allocated to 2024. The new log yard and related operations are expected to be completed at the beginning of 2025.
Today, logs are sorted in the Koskisen Tehdastie industrial area and transported by trucks to a sawmill about four kilometres away on Mäntsäläntie. The new log yard will significantly reduce transport costs and the carbon footprint of transports.
