Sappi Europe to Maintain Prices of Woodfree Coated Paper for Remainder of 2023

In an effort to address prevalent supply chain uncertainties and to maintain the commercial viability of its Graphic Paper business, Sappi Europe will keep prices for its Woodfree Coated Paper grades stable at today’s level for the remainder of 2023.

This commitment facilitates customers’ ability to commit to business in advance of the traditionally busier fourth quarter for the printing industry. Market conditions are similar across the region, but obviously diverge between countries and segments and as such Sappi Europe’s sales personnel is always available for these individual customer specifics.

Sappi Europe remains fully committed to serving the printing business and will work closely with our customers to ensure the best possible outcome throughout the print media value chain.

European Paper Industry Associations Pro Carton and CEPI Cartonboard to Merge

Pro Carton and CEPI Cartonboard recently announced that they will merge into one association under the name Pro Carton. The decision follows a 12-month period of consultation.

The final merger is expected to take place mid-2024 after all legal procedures are successfully completed.

The announcement was made at the Associations’ Annual General Meeting on 16 June 2023.

The merger will create a more effective and efficient group that has a stronger voice throughout the carton industry. This will include several new working streams, each devoted to driving synergies, improving the Associations’ representation and support it offers member organizations.

Pulp Exports from Brazil Climb to USD 4.1 Billion in First Half 2023; China, North America Main Destinations

The Brazilian Tree Industry (Ibá) reported that for the first half of 2023, pulp exports from Brazil increased by 8.2%, totaling USD 4.1 billion, driven by sales to China and North America (United States and Canada). The balance generated by pulp exports to China increased by 25.4% and to North America by 19.9% in the first half of 2023.

The value of paper exports to North America also increased by 20.8%, reaching R$ 130.8 million between January and June, Ibá reports.

 note: The paper segment includes: packaging and wrapping, printing and writing, tissue, newsprint, cardboard, and other grades.

In the first half of 2023, the increase in pulp exports to China positioned that country as the main destination for exports of pulp produced in Brazil, reaching USD 1.8 billion traded in the first six months of 2023, followed by Europe with USD 1 billion.

Voith and Sichuan Huaqiao Fenghuang Paper successfully start up PM6 packaging paper machine

On August 13, Sichuan Huaqiao Fenghuang Paper successfully started up its highly efficient XcelLine packaging paper machine at the Guanghan site. The leading full-line supplier Voith delivered the entire line. The project set a new record for the fastest start-up of such a paper machine. Only six months passed from installation to successful start-up – two months ahead of schedule. The commissioning of the BlueLine OCC stock preparation system and the XcelLine paper machine took just four and five weeks, respectively.

PM 6 has a width of 7.92 meters and a design speed of 1,400 meters per minute. It mainly produces high-quality packaging paper in the range of 90 to 170 gsm and has an annual production capacity of about 400,000 tons. The associated BlueLine OCC stock preparation line has an impressive capacity of 2,200 tons per day and is currently the largest OCC line in the Asian market.

Valmet to supply machine vision systems to Shanxi Qiangwei Paper in China

Valmet has received an order from Shanxi Qiangwei Paper Co., Ltd. to supply machine vision systems for Qiangwei’s paper machine PM 6. The scope of supply includes a Valmet IQ Web Inspection System, a Valmet IQ Web Monitoring System and winder control with target-stop functionality. The investment aims to improve the operating efficiency and optimize the final paper quality of the PM 6.

The order was included in Valmet’s orders received of the second quarter 2023. The delivery will take place in the first quarter 2024. The value of the order will not be disclosed.

“We selected Valmet because of its advanced solutions and extensive project experience. We are confident that Valmet’s state-of-the-art technology and process know-how will elevate the level of intelligence and automation in our operations to a new height. We’ve had very good cooperation with Valmet in previous projects and I am sure this will be another success,” says Huang Wenbin, PM 6 production manager at Shanxi Qiangwei Paper Co., Ltd.

Valmet to deliver diffuser rebuild to Billerud’s Skärblacka mill in Sweden

Valmet will deliver a complete atmospheric diffuser rebuild to Billerud’s Skärblacka mill in Sweden. The delivery is scheduled to take place in May 2024.

 

The order was included in Valmet’s orders received of the second quarter 2023. The value of the order will not be disclosed.

 

Skärblacka mill’s original washer was delivered by Valmet in 1973. The rebuild will secure the washer’s performance and availability for years to come and prepare the mill for future capacity increases.

“We have established a long-lasting relationship with Valmet and have learned to trust their expertise. We have confidence in Valmet’s technology and found their solution superior to the alternatives,” says Samuel Wirzén, Project Manager at Billerud’s Skärblacka mill.

“We are happy that Skärblacka chose Valmet to supply washer technology. We believe that our solution will be both valuable to the mill and prolong the lifespan of their machine,” says Lennart Montonen, Sales Manager, Pulp Solutions, EMEA Area at Valmet.

The rebuild will include a complete technology upgrade and an installation of a Valmet Atmospheric Diffuser Kit, leading to optimized washing and increased capacity.

Billerud provides paper and packaging materials made from virgin fiber – passionately committed to sustainability, quality, and customer value. The Skärblacka mill produces white machine glazed kraft paper, brown sack paper and fluting and runs two laboratories specialized in developing packaging for food and medical products.

Billerud introduces new regional organization for Europe and appoints acting CFO

Billerud is introducing a new organization whereby the company harmonizes and operates its business in two distinct geographical regions – Europe and North America. Billerud further appoints Andrei Krés as acting CFO, effective immediately.

Matthew Hirst, previously EVP Commercial, has been appointed President of Billerud Europe and will lead the new European organization consisting of Commercial, Operations and Procurement & Wood Supply functions. Kevin Kuznicki remains President of the North American organization.

In addition, Andrei Krés, has been appointed as acting CFO and will be part of the Group Management Team. Andrei Krés holds a bachelor’s degree in business and economics from Lund University and has held various positions in Billerud, most recently as the Vice President of the Group Finance function.

Billerud is one of the leading manufacturers of packaging paper made from virgin fibers.

Thai Cane PM11 awards order for 3 Dryer Fabric Cleaners to ProJet

ProJet received an order for a total 3 Power Cleaners (dryer fabric cleaners) from Thai Cane (Siam Cement Group) for their PM11 in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The order was received in August 2023 and will delivered in Q1 2024.

Of course, all Power Cleaners will be ProJet’s Power Cleaner 2.0, the upgraded version. The upgrade consists of a smaller cleaner head, more nozzles at higher pressure and improved vacuum/discharge system. The combination of all these improvements is an increased cleaning efficiency, exactly what Thai Cane needed for its Dryer Fabrics.

Total U.S. Boxboard Production Decreased Eleven Percent in Q2 2023

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its Q2 2023 Boxboard report. According to the report, total boxboard production in Q2 decreased 11% compared to Q2 2022. The boxboard operating rate was 86.6%, down 7.6 points from Q2 2022.

Maximising the recyclability of paper sacks

The proposed EU Regulation on Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR) aims to tackle the problem of growing packaging waste. One of the targets is to make all packaging recyclable by 2030. To support sack kraft paper producers, paper sack converters and fillers to maximise the recyclability of all paper sacks placed on the market, EUROSAC and CEPI Eurokraft have published Paper Sacks – Design for Recyclability Guidelines. These guidelines provide recommendations for the materials used and for the physical construction of paper sacks.

International Paper reports Q2 net earnings of $235 million

International Paper (IP) reported Q2 2023 financial results. Net earnings were $۲۳۵ million ($۰.۶۸ per diluted share), Adjusted operating earnings were $۲۰۴ million ($۰.۵۹ per diluted share).

COBAP completes PM1 modernization at mill in Brazil

Brazil’s COBAP completed the modernization process of its PM#1. Hergen has supplied a set of equipment for the modernization of the press section and the installation of a new drive concept for the drying section. Canfor Pulp’s Northwood Pulp Mill Resuming Production after BC Port Strike Ends

Canfor Pulp Products said that production will resume at its Northwood Pulp Mill in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada, this week.

On July 13, Canfor Pulp curtailed production at the Northwood Pulp Mill due to limited storage space for pulp products that could not be transported overseas as a result of the labour dispute at B.C. ports.

The downtime could have reduced the mill’s production capacity by about 11,000 tonnes of market kraft pulp per week.
