Industrial Fire at Nippon Dynawave Packaging Mill in Longview Fueled by Woodchip Piles

Crews estimated Wednesday they would continue to battle Tuesday night’s large commercial fire at the Industrial Way paper mill complex throughout the day in Longview, Washington.

Wood chip piles were fueling the blaze at Nippon Dynawave Packaging at 1701 Industrial Way as of Wednesday morning near the entrance on the Longview side of the Lewis and Clark Bridge and Weyerhaeuser’s gate 4 near Oregon and Industrial ways.

A large plume of smoke could still be seen Wednesday afternoon.

Valmet will supply a new high-capacity winder to Gascogne Papier in France. The winder will be delivered for the paper machine PM 7 at their Mimizan site.

Valmet’s delivery will include a high-capacity OptiWin two-drum compact winder that has a wide production range with different widths and diameters of shipping rolls. As a key solution for high-quality multi-roll winding, the winder is equipped with pro-active dual spreading.

Södra Reports Lower Second Quarter Results on Weaker Market Conditions

Södra reported second quarter 2023 net sales of SEK 7,322 million (8,953). Operating profit totaled SEK 464 million (2,325), representing an operating margin of 6 percent (26). Return on capital employed was 13 percent (39) and the equity ratio was 61 percent.

During the quarter, the World-class Efficiency project achieved annual efficiency gains of SEK 500 million.

Grupo Corporativo Papelera to Expand Tissue Manufacturing in Texas

Mexican tissue paper manufacturer Grupo Corporativo Papelera (GCP) is purchasing 32 acres in the East Montgomery Industrial Park in New Caney, Texas, the Houston Business Journal reported.

The estimated $400 million facility will serve as the site for the company’s new manufacturing and conversion facility, marking an expansion of its operations in the United States, the news outlet reported.

Canfor Pulp’s Northwood Pulp Mill Resuming Production after BC Port Strike Ends

Canfor Pulp Products said that production will resume at its Northwood Pulp Mill in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada, this week.

On July 13, Canfor Pulp curtailed production at the Northwood Pulp Mill due to limited storage space for pulp products that could not be transported overseas as a result of the labour dispute at B.C. ports.

The downtime could have reduced the mill’s production capacity by about 11,000 tonnes of market kraft pulp per week.

Manitoba Government supports exploring greener technology at Canadian Kraft Paper Industries’ mill

The Manitoba government and the Community Economic Development Fund are partnering with Canadian Kraft Paper Industries Ltd. (CKP) to explore opportunities for transitioning to a greener economy in northern Manitoba, Natural Resources and Northern Development Minister Greg Nesbitt announced.

“Our government continues to invest in the north, creating and maintaining sustainable jobs,” said Nesbitt. “The use of forest biomass in the north can benefit both the environment and the local economy. It is a potential win-win that is well worth exploring further.”

Runtech to rebuild vacuum system at DS Smith Kemsley Mill

Runtech Systems has received a repeat order from DS Smith Paper Ltd, Kemsley Mill, for a RunEco vacuum system rebuild on PM4. In the rebuild, existing liquid ring pumps will be replaced by four EP600 Turbo Blowers. Delivery also includes detailed engineering, EcoDrop and EcoSep water separators. With the rebuild, PM4 targets significant energy savings and reduction in CO2 emissions.

Saica Group has reached an agreement with the family owners and has acquired a minority share of their corrugated plants in Annone di Brianza and Pietrasanta, Italy. These two plants have a revenue of Euro 105 million in 2022, and provide direct employment to 247 people.

UPM Sells Recovered Paper Sorting Plant in Germany to Fisel Holding

UPM has signed an agreement on the sale of the recovered paper sorting plant ASK Kinsau in Germany to the Fisel Holding GmbH & Co. KG, a recovered logistics and municipal waste disposal company.

The sale and purchase agreement includes the site and buildings. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

All employees of ASK Kinsau will be transferred to the new owner.

Canfor Pulp Temporarily Curtailing Northwood Pulp Mill Due to Ongoing Labour Dispute at B.C. Ports

Canfor Pulp Products is announcing the curtailment of its Northwood Pulp Mill in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada, effective July 13, 2023.

The curtailment is due to limited storage space for pulp products that cannot be transported overseas as a result of the ongoing labour dispute at B.C. ports.

The downtime is expected to remain in place for the duration of the labour dispute and will remove approximately 11,000 tonnes of market kraft pulp per week.

Logson Group acquires majority shareholding in Durham Box

The Logson Group, the UK’s largest independent supplier of corrugated packaging, announces the acquisition of a majority shareholding in Durham Box, an independent sheet plant based in County Durham.

The existing management team will remain with the business, continuing to lead Durham Box as a stand-alone business within the Logson Group.

West Fraser to sell Hinton Pulp in Alberta to Mondi Group

West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. announced an agreement to sell its unbleached softwood kraft pulp mill in Hinton, Alberta to Mondi Group plc, a global company in sustainable packaging and paper.

The transaction establishes a long-term partnership between the two companies in the region. Pursuant to the transaction, West Fraser will continue to supply fibre to the Hinton mill under long-term contract, via residuals from West Fraser’s Alberta sawmills. Mondi’s intention, subject to pre-engineering and permitting, is to invest Euro 400 million in the expansion of the Hinton mill, primarily for a new 200,000 tonne per annum kraft paper machine, anticipated to be operational from the second half of 2027.

The inauguration of the new integrated corrugated plant in Rabat, Morocco, marks Smurfit Kappas first operation in North Africa.

Rottneros secures long-term renewable energy

Rottneros has entered into a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) including Guarantees of Origin (GoOs) with the third largest German energy group Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW). The utility will supply Rottneros with just over 30 GWh/annum of clean energy delivered from the 116 MW Målarberget wind farm in Sweden over an 8.5-year period starting in 2025. The partnership marks an additional step in Rottneros’ ambitions to reduce the environmental impact of its operations and its exposure to the volatile and uncertain electricity market.

Runtech Systems receives repeat order for vacuum systems to Shanying Suzhou Paper, China

Runtech Systems delivers two RunEco vacuum systems to Shanying Suzhou Paper, at its site in Suzhou, Anhui Province, China. The delivery consists of 14 EP Turbo Blowers and parts for the concrete water separators. RunEco systems will provide vacuum for the two new linerboard machines PM71 and PM72 with design speed of 1,300 m/min and reel width of 8,600 mm. The total production capacity of the corrugating medium machines is around 800,000 tons per year.

Mondi’s TankerBox revolutionises sustainable shipping for Aromsa’s flavourful products

Industry-leading Turkish flavour company Aromsa, whose products include sauces, toppings, extracts and seasonings, was faced with a challenge. The company was fully committed to its sustainability strategy, but it had also started to work with a new customer who wanted to use stainless-steel containers for shipping. This would require an investment into approximately 250 stainless-steel containers, which is a costly packaging solution. In addition to high price, there are also the logistical costs of storage and maintenance, washing and sterilising the containers.
