Stora Enso opens a new corrugated packaging production factory at De Lier, the Netherlands. The site is part of the recently acquired De Jong Packaging Group, now Business Unit Western Europe in the Packaging Solutions division.

The expansion adds a new, second factory to the De Lier site and equipping the facility with two new corrugators to augment the existing two. As a result of the expansion, the site is now the largest and most modern corrugated packaging facility in Europe. The De Lier site’s products currently include boxes and trays for fresh produce, horticultural and industrial applications, e-commerce and transport.

Stora Enso and Tetra Pak start operation of recycling line for beverage cartons in Poland

With a joint investment of approximately Euro 29 million by Stora Enso and Tetra Pak, a new recycling line for post-consumer beverage cartons is starting operations in Poland.

Stora Enso has invested approximately Euro 17 million into a new repulping line that will recover the carton fibers, and Tetra Pak along with Plastigram have invested a total of approximately Euro 12 million to build the new line. The line has the potential to triple the annual recycling capacity of beverage cartons in the country – from 25,000 to 75,000 tonnes – and provides scope to absorb the entire volume of beverage cartons sold in Poland, as well as additional volumes from neighbouring countries, including the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.

The group invested 200 million euros in the site to convert the existing paper machine into a recycled paper production unit based on carbon-free energy. For Papierfabrik Palm’s Wellpappe Alzenau, ground surveys are currently taking place for the new construc-tion of the corrugated board plant in the industrial area of Alzenau-Nord. This is the first step of the project “New construction of the Alzenau corrugated board plant”, which at the same time involves an upgrading of the existing site for the inner city of Alzenau.

The new site of Wellpappe Alzenau is located on the edge of the industrial area Alzenau-Nord. Exploratory drilling is currently underway, which is necessary for the preparation of a building ground report. The soil investigations will be completed within a few days.

Western Forest Products announces temporary production curtailments in British Columbia

Western Forest Products Inc. recently announced plans to temporarily reduce its lumber production over the next month by approximately 19 million board feet due to weak market conditions.

The temporary reduction in lumber production will be spread across certain sawmills in the Company’s British Columbia manufacturing platform through the remainder of June and into early July. Remanufacturing and shipping operations will continue uninterrupted. Lumber production at impacted sites is expected to resume in mid-July  depending on market conditions and available log supply.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted innovative Swedish company, PulPac, three new US patents, two of which concern the divisional applications from PulPac’s original applications filed in 2016/2017, where one is related to the basic process of Dry Molded Fiber, and the second is related specifically to bottle forming. Metsä Tissue announced that it will become a shareholder of “Modellfabrik Papier in Düren,” in Germany, effective July 1, 2023.

Founded in 2020, Modellfabrik is a society for research and development for sustainable paper technologies. It conducts basic research in the field of emission-free paper production. The primary goal is to achieve 80% energy savings in paper production and climate neutrality by 2045 and thus CO2-neutral paper production. This is intended to make an active contribution to achieving the Paris Climate Agreement and to safeguard Germany as an industrial location.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has released the May 2023 Printing-Writing Monthly report. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 22% in May compared to May 2022.

U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers decreased 24% in May compared to the same month last year.

Bracell recently announced the start of civil works for the largest tissue mill in Latin America. The unit is being built next to Bracell’s pulp mill in Lencois Paulista (SP). In all, the company is investing R$ 5 billion in the city, R$ 2.5 billion of which in the construction of the tissue mill, which is expected to start operating in 2024, and the other half of the amount for investment in a plant production of sodium chlorate and hydrogen peroxide, chemical components used in the pulp production process.

Norske Skog announced that the newly converted paper machine, PM 3, at Bruck Mill in Styria, Austria, is now producing Strato Testliner and Fluting.

Norske Skog said PM 3 ‘Emma’ produced her first reel of recycled containerboard at the end of May following a conversion that not only transformed the paper machine, but the entire site of Norske Skog Bruck. The project included the installation of a new multifuel boiler, the construction of a new OCC plant, and an expansion of the facility’s wastewater treatment plant.

Stora Enso is planning to restructure actions to strengthen the Group’s long-term competitiveness, improve profitability and focus capital allocation in strategic growth markets. Stora Enso is also taking the next step in driving a decentralised operating model targeting increased customer centricity, business focus and cost reductions.

The planned restructuring actions, combined with previously initiated negotiations in the Packaging Materials division, would result in total reductions of approximately 1,150 employees.
