PaperWorks Acquires The Standard Group in Louisville, Kentucky

PaperWorks Industries has completed the acquisition of The Standard Group. Founded in 1932, The Standard Group is a converter of custom printed paperboard packaging with a manufacturing location in Louisville, Kentucky.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

PaperWorks Industries Inc. has completed the acquisition of The Standard Group. Founded in 1932, The Standard Group is a converter of custom printed paperboard packaging with a manufacturing location in Louisville, Kentucky.

By integrating The Standard Group’s folding carton facility in Louisville and welcoming 120 team members, PaperWorks will operate an integrated folding carton business including two mills and six converting facilities employing over 1,400 team members.

ABB to supply sectional drive systems to Stora Enso’s Oulu mill in Finland

Stora Enso has selected ABB for supplying sectional drive systems for their Oulu mill in Northern Finland, where their former paper line will be converted into a consumer board line for folding box board and coated unbleached kraft.

Production on the new converted machine is estimated to start during 2025.

Rengo to achieve zero use of coal at manufacturing sites by 2027

The Rengo Group will achieve zero use of coal at manufacturing sites in Japan by 2027. Currently, the Paperboard Production Group’s Kanazu Mill and Marusan Paper Mfg. Co., Ltd. use a total of approximately 125,000 tons of coal each year. Kanazu Mill will convert to the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for fuel in 2026 and Marusan Paper Mfg. in 2027 to fully abolish the use of coal. This will move the Group significantly closer toward achieving the stated target for reduction in CO2 emissions derived from fossil energy.

The Group has also declared in Rengo Group Environment Action 2050 that it is taking on the challenge of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In addition to the plan for zero use of coal, the Group will implement further environmental countermeasures to achieve carbon neutrality.

Stora Enso opens new corrugated packaging production factory at De Lier, Netherlands

Stora Enso opens a new corrugated packaging production factory at De Lier, the Netherlands. The site is part of the recently acquired De Jong Packaging Group, now Business Unit Western Europe in the Packaging Solutions division.

The expansion adds a new, second factory to the De Lier site and equipping the facility with two new corrugators to augment the existing two. As a result of the expansion, the site is now the largest and most modern corrugated packaging facility in Europe. The De Lier site’s products currently include boxes and trays for fresh produce, horticultural and industrial applications, e-commerce and transport.

Stora Enso and Tetra Pak start operation of recycling line for beverage cartons in Poland

With a joint investment of approximately Euro 29 million by Stora Enso and Tetra Pak, a new recycling line for post-consumer beverage cartons is starting operations in Poland.

Stora Enso has invested approximately Euro 17 million into a new repulping line that will recover the carton fibers, and Tetra Pak along with Plastigram have invested a total of approximately Euro 12 million to build the new line. The line has the potential to triple the annual recycling capacity of beverage cartons in the country – from 25,000 to 75,000 tonnes – and provides scope to absorb the entire volume of beverage cartons sold in Poland, as well as additional volumes from neighbouring countries, including the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.

Papierfabrik Palm to build new corrugated board plant in Alzenau

For Papierfabrik Palm’s Wellpappe Alzenau, ground surveys are currently taking place for the new construc-tion of the corrugated board plant in the industrial area of Alzenau-Nord. This is the first step of the project “New construction of the Alzenau corrugated board plant”, which at the same time involves an upgrading of the existing site for the inner city of Alzenau.

The new site of Wellpappe Alzenau is located on the edge of the industrial area Alzenau-Nord. Exploratory drilling is currently underway, which is necessary for the preparation of a building ground report. The soil investigations will be completed within a few days.

Western Forest Products announces temporary production curtailments in British Columbia

Western Forest Products Inc. recently announced plans to temporarily reduce its lumber production over the next month by approximately 19 million board feet due to weak market conditions.

The temporary reduction in lumber production will be spread across certain sawmills in the Company’s British Columbia manufacturing platform through the remainder of June and into early July. Remanufacturing and shipping operations will continue uninterrupted. Lumber production at impacted sites is expected to resume in mid-July  depending on market conditions and available log supply.

PulPac receives three new US patents

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted innovative Swedish company, PulPac, three new US patents, two of which concern the divisional applications from PulPac’s original applications filed in 2016/2017, where one is related to the basic process of Dry Molded Fiber, and the second is related specifically to bottle forming.
