Hood Container acquires Sustainable Printing LLC

Hood Container Corporation has acquired the corrugated packaging business of Dalton, Georgia based Sustainable Printing LLC. The transaction includes all printing, converting, and ancillary equipment located in Dalton. Hood will continue operating these assets in the current facility.

These assets complement Hood Container’s Southeastern footprint creating greater corrugated capacity and enhanced production capabilities in the Georgia and Tennessee region. This acquisition increases Hood Container’s digital print production footprint and will allow the company to continue expanding its corrugated converting capabilities.

Södra reported second quarter 2023 net sales of SEK 7,322 million (8,953). Operating profit totaled SEK 464 million (2,325), representing an operating margin of 6 percent (26). Return on capital employed was 13 percent (39) and the equity ratio was 61 percent.

During the quarter, the World-class Efficiency project achieved annual efficiency gains of SEK 500 million.

The EU is close to agreeing new rules around packaging and packaging waste, but amendments proposed to the Commission’s proposal risk flooding the market with millions of tonnes of new plastic and rolling back a decade of measures to curb plastic use, according to DS Smith, the FTSE 100 leader in sustainable packaging, paper products and recycling.

Amendments to the Commission’s proposal for a Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) are being debated by MEPs and Member States, and proposed changes include introducing mandatory reuse targets for all materials.

The industrial site in Alizay, acquired in June 2022, has been converted by VPK into a sustainable development hub for circular economy. The group invested 200 million euros in the site to convert the existing paper machine into a recycled paper production unit based on carbon-free energy. The site strengthens VPK’s position in the French and European markets through higher vertical integration.

Clothing and underwear are among the booming groups of goods in e-commerce. The corresponding shipping packaging must take various factors into account and therefore place high demands on its design.

Südwestkarton created an e-commerce shipping box that makes it impossible to tamper with the packaging unnoticed. The box must be clearly opened to remove the garments. Thanks to this protection against interference, the safety and quality of the goods are maintained and the complaint rate is reduced over the long term.

Mactac is acquiring Label Supply, headquartered in Ontario, Canada. Label Supply has been servicing the Canadian roll label market for more than three decades.

The acquisition is expected to close June 1, 2023, and consists of an established, turnkey facility with 11 finishing assets, a comprehensive transportation/shipping fleet, robust laboratory and technical resource group, and an in-house ink partner. The Leipzig-based manufacturer of testing equipment for the pulp, paper, tissue and board in-dustry will present solutions to automate quality control and improve product quality from June 12-14 at the XV Scientific and Technical Conference and Exhibition INPAP 2023 in Lodz.

The INPAP Conference, hosted by the Centre of Papermaking and Printing at Lodz University of Technology, brings together industry professionals to present scien-tific research regarding new developments in the manufacture of pulp, paper, tissue and board. Emtec Electronic will be attending the event as an exhibitor to present its array of testing solu-tions, including devices for measuring the surface charge (zeta potential) and assessing the min-eral filler content of paper and board. Additionally, Mr. Ulli Kasten will talk during the conference about the softness measurement of hygienic papers and explains the possibilities that raise for the users.

Norske Skog Bruck begins commercial deliveries of containerboard

Norske Skog Bruck announces successful commercial orders of the containerboard grades Testliner 3 and Fluting. This represents the introduction of 210,000 tonnes of competitive containerboard capacity to meet the growing demand for renewable and re-usable packaging. The production is based 100% on recycled fibre and will use steam from the waste-to-energy plant, which opened in April 2022.

Norske Skog Bruck is now ramping up production and expects full utilisation of 95% in the second half of 2025. The successful commercial orders of Strato Testliner 3 and Fluting mark a new era for Norske Skog and strengthen the company’s asset base and cash flow generation for decades ahead.

Arctic Paper announced that the group’s CFO, Göran Eklund, will retire at the end of June and will be replaced, with effect as of May 29, by Katarzyna Wojtkowiak, who is currently Chief Accountant.

Wojtkowiak has been Chief Accountant and Group Treasury at Arctic Paper for over 11 years. Prior to this, she has worked in various roles in accounting and finance at Flexlink in Poland.

Supremex on May 8 announced the acquisition of the assets of Graf-Pak Inc., a provider of folding carton packaging solutions to a variety of commercial markets. The transaction was concluded for a total consideration of approximately $6.0 million, on a cash-free and debt-free basis, subject to customary adjustments, financed through the company’s existing credit facility.

Founded in 1995 and employing close to 25 people, Graf-Pak operates a facility located in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, near Supremex’s primary folding carton plant in Lachine.
