The environmental impact assessment procedure for Kaskinen paperboard mill project completed

The South Ostrobothnia Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment issued its statement on the EIA report for the Kaskinen paperboard mill of Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, on 22 September 2023. This concludes the mill project’s environmental impact assessment procedure.

The results of the impact assessment will be considered in the ongoing planning and decision-making process. The EIA process does not make decisions on the project but aims to provide information to support decision-making and to increase public access to information and influence.

Metsä Board started pre-engineering for the new paperboard mill in Kaskinen in autumn 2022. The pre-engineering is based on fossil free production and world-class resource, production and environmental efficiency. Metsä Board estimates that a possible investment decision can be made in 2024 at the earliest.

PulPac launches the world’s first injection molding machine for fiber-based products

PulPac makes good on its promise to make Dry Molded Fiber more accessible to people worldwide. With the launch of a new machine platform, the PulPac Scala, the company takes a significant step in the Dry Molded Fiber revolution. Dry Molded Fiber is a game-changing fiber-forming technology invented and licensed by Swedish packaging tech company PulPac to replace single-use plastic on a global scale. The technology makes it possible to produce sustainable packaging that’s resource-, energy-, and cost-efficient. Together with turnkey partner Huarong Group from Taiwan, PulPac is now launching a compact and scalable Dry Molded Fiber machine platform.

Obbola paper mill inaugurated: Increased capacity for better business and increased climate benefit

“This marks a significant stride in enhancing the competitiveness of SCA and Obbola, empowering us to better serve a market that is transitioning away from fossil packaging materials,” notes Gustaf Nygren, Mill manager at SCA Obbola.

The capacity for kraftliner production is poised for a notable increase, soaring from 450,000 tons to an impressive 725,000 tons annually. The standout transformation at the facility is the addition of the world’s largest machine, courtesy of German company Voith, specifically designed for kraftliner production. This colossal machine spans an impressive 250 meters in length and boasts an estimated weight of approximately 11,000 tonnes.

As part of this ambitious project, involving an investment of approximately SEK 7.5 billion, several enhancements have been implemented. These encompass improvements in the work environment, the installation of a high-capacity recycled fiber line, and the introduction of a brand-new lime kiln.

Heinzel Group postpones rebuild of PM 11 at its Laakirchen plant

Austrian paper producer Heinzel will continue to produce SC Paper on PM 11 at its Laakirchen mill in Austria until the first quarter of next year and then start the planned the rebuild of the machine. The postponement to September 2024 enables Heinzel to serve its SC paper customers for two more quarters. According to the company, this solution is the the best course of action in view of the current situation.

Originally, the restart was planned for Q2 2024.

With the conversion to packaging papers, the capacity of the rebuilt production line will be increased from 350,000 tpy of SC paper to 500,000 tpy of recycled fluting and testliner.

Georgia-Pacific to close Foley cellulose facility

Georgia-Pacific informed employees at its Foley Cellulose mill in Perry, Florida, that the company plans to permanently close the facility.

All the approximately 525 jobs at the mill will be impacted by this closure.

The Foley mill produces specialty and fluff pulp.

According to Georgia-Pacific, various factors influenced this difficult decision. Ultimately, GP does not believe that the mill can competitively serve its customers in the long term despite the significant investments and commitment by GP Cellulose since the site was acquired in 2013.

Total U.S. Packaging Papers & Specialty Packaging Shipments Decreased 4 Percent in August 2023

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) released its August 2023 Packaging Papers Monthly report. According to the report, total packaging papers & specialty packaging shipments in August decreased 4% compared to August 2022. They were down 3% when compared to the same 8 months of 2022.

  • Shipments of the biggest subgrade in bleached packaging papers — food wrapping — were 25,900 short tons for the month of August, down 16.4% year-to-date.
  • The unbleached packaging papers operating rate was 83.7%, down 9.6 points from August 2023 and down 9.4 points year-to-date.

Total U.S. Printing-Writing Paper Shipments Decreased 20 Percent in August 2023

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has released the August 2023 Printing-Writing Monthly report. According to the report, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 20% in August compared to August 2022.

U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers decreased 33% in July compared to the same month last year.

Total printing-writing paper inventory levels decreased 5% when compared to July 2023.

Andritz to supply new debarking and chipping line to Nordic Paper Bäckhammar mill, Sweden

Andritz has received an order from Nordic Paper to deliver a new wood room with chip and bark handling for its Bäckhammar mill in Sweden.

The new wood room contributes to meeting the very high pulp quality standards at the Bäckhammar mill. The plant will have the capacity to process over 1.4 million m³ sob of pine and spruce logs annually. Start-up is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025.

 

The new wood room will be the benchmark in sustainable solutions in the wood handling area. The delivery includes a new debarking and chipping line with steam de-icing in the debarking drum, which ensures a high debarking degree with low wood losses and at the same time saves energy.

International Paper completes sale of ownership interest in Ilim joint venture

International Paper announced that it has completed the sale of its 50% interest in Ilim SA, the holding company for its Ilim joint venture (JV), to its JV partners for $484MM (USD) in cash.

In addition, the Company completed the sale of its outstanding shares in JSC Ilim Group to its JV partners for $24MM (USD) in cash and is divesting other non-material residual interests associated with Ilim.

With the completion of these transactions, International Paper has divested all of its ownership interests in Ilim.

Mondi and Robopac developed sustainable paper wrapping solution

Mondi has partnered with Robopac, a world-leading manufacturer of pallet-wrapping machinery, to offer a seamless and more sustainable paper wrapping solution for pallet storage and transportation.

Arauco’s Licancel Pulp Mill in Chile Shutdown Due to Storm-Related Flooding

Arauco announced that a storm in mid-August, which affected the central-southern area of Chile, forced the company to completely shut down its Licancel pulp mill, located in Licanten, in the Maule Region of Chile.

The shutdown took place August 21 due to the overflowing of the Mataquito River.

Arauco said it is “currently reviewing the consequences and impacts of this force majeure event, quantifying the damages caused, and evaluating the future steps to be taken in relation to the plant itself.”

Smurfit Kappa and Westrock merger deal would create the largest containerboard producer in the world

Smurfit Kappa Group CEO Tony Smurfit said that the combination of Smurfit Kappa and WestRock is a promising and complementary deal.

The two companies signed a definitive agreement to combine in what would create a $34 billion company with 23 million tons of mill capacity and 500 converting plants focused on containerboard, as well as a large consumer packaging business. The combined companies would be the largest containerboard and boxmaking company in the world.

If the deal is finalized, the new combined company is to be called Smurfit WestRock.

“(This) combination has a lot of merit,” said Smurfit from Ireland on Sept. 12.

Dunapack Packaging completes take-over of Scatoloficio La Veggia in Italy

Prinzhorn Group’s Dunapack Packaging has completed the take-over of the corrugated packaging plant Scatoloficio La Veggia s.p.a. located in Roteglia, Italy. The plant has a production capacity of 200 million sqm annually with around 140 employees. Prinzhorn Group had announced its strategic long-term interest in Italy in 2022.

US manufactured goods orders down 2.1% in July

New orders for U.S. manufactured goods in July 2023, down following four consecutive monthly increases, decreased $12.7 billion or 2.1% to $579.4 billion. This followed a 2.3% June increase, as the U.S. Census Bureau reported.

Shipments, up three consecutive months, increased $2.9 billion or 0.5% to $577.2 billion. This followed a 0.2% June increase. Unfilled orders, up seven of the last eight months, increased $7.2 billion or 0.5% to $1,332.0 billion. This followed a 1.8% June increase. The unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio was 6.80, up from 6.74 in June.

Inventories, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, increased $0.6 billion or 0.1% to $852.5 billion. This followed a 0.2% June decrease. The inventories-to-shipments ratio was 1.48, unchanged from June.
