Avery Dennison Corporation has selected five startups for Cohort 02 of the AD Stretch Accelerator Program. AD Stretch tackles crucial challenges in the labels and packaging industry, including connected packaging, materials innovation and sustainability. The program, run in partnership with accelerator builder-operator Highline Beta, received over 300 applications from startups worldwide.

Having started his career at AB Grigeo as a purchasing manager, Tomas Jozonis has held various management positions for the past eight years, and since 2019 served as the general director of the company’s paper business.

Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has collaborated with Silbo to upgrade its pallet wrapping from plastic stretch film to Mondi’s kraft paper Advantage StretchWrap. Silbo has installed the first EW Technology PaperWrap machine at its plant in Zory, Poland and provides more sustainable flexible packaging for its broad range of customers, including those supplying fruits and vegetables.

Performance BioFilaments announced the start-up of the world’s largest nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) commercial production plant at Resolute Forest Products’ Kenogami paper mill in Quebec, Canada.
Nanofibrillated cellulose is a natural, renewable and sustainable biomaterial derived from well-managed, certified forests. It provides a low carbon additive to enhance performance-driven advanced materials and specialty chemicals.

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, will initiate change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs for its paperboard and BCTMP mills in Finland. The negotiations involve a total of 1,100 employees at the Joutseno, Kaskinen, Kemi, Kyro, Tampere, Simpele and Äänekoski mills.
The possible layoffs would last a maximum of 90 days and could be implemented in several installments by the end of this year.

The Leipzig-based manufacturer of testing equipment for the pulp, paper, tissue and board in-dustry will present solutions to automate quality control and improve product quality from June 12-14 at the XV Scientific and Technical Conference and Exhibition INPAP 2023 in Lodz.
The INPAP Conference, hosted by the Centre of Papermaking and Printing at Lodz University of Technology, brings together industry professionals to present scien-tific research regarding new developments in the manufacture of pulp, paper, tissue and board. Emtec Electronic will be attending the event as an exhibitor to present its array of testing solu-tions, including devices for measuring the surface charge (zeta potential) and assessing the min-eral filler content of paper and board. Additionally, Mr. Ulli Kasten will talk during the conference about the softness measurement of hygienic papers and explains the possibilities that raise for the users.

Packaging Corporation of America reported Q1 2023 net income of $۱۹۰ million, or $۲.۱۱ per share, and net income of $۱۹۸ million, or $۲.۲۰ per share, excluding special items. Q1 2023 net sales were $۲.۰ billion in 2023 and $۲.۱ billion in 2022.
In the Packaging segment, total corrugated products shipments and shipments per day were down 12.7% compared to the Q1 2022. Containerboard production was 1,086,000 tons, and containerboard inventory was down 36,000 tons from the Q1 2022 and up 6,000 tons compared to the Q4 2022. In the Paper segment, sales volume was down 23,000 tons from the Q1 2022 and down 6,000 tons compared to the Q4 2022.

Valmet will deliver a new refiner with chip washer capacity of 28 ton/h to Arauco’s new MDF plant located in Zitácuaro, Mexico. The start-up of the system is planned for the last quarter of 2024.
The order was included in Valmet’s orders received of the first quarter 2023. The value of the order will not be disclosed.

Norske Skog Bruck announces successful commercial orders of the containerboard grades Testliner 3 and Fluting. This represents the introduction of 210,000 tonnes of competitive containerboard capacity to meet the growing demand for renewable and re-usable packaging. The production is based 100% on recycled fibre and will use steam from the waste-to-energy plant, which opened in April 2022.
Norske Skog Bruck is now ramping up production and expects full utilisation of 95% in the second half of 2025. The successful commercial orders of Strato Testliner 3 and Fluting mark a new era for Norske Skog and strengthen the company’s asset base and cash flow generation for decades ahead.

KKR, a leading global investment firm, today announced the signing of a definitive agreement under which investment funds managed by KKR will acquire Industrial Physics (or the “Company”), a leading manufacturer of testing and measurement instruments, from Union Park Capital (“UPC”). Clearwater Paper Corporation recently announced that the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) has validated the company’s climate targets. These targets include reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 29.1 percent and absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 25 percent by 2030. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. SBTi is focused on accelerating companies worldwide to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

The pulp and paper industry shares the twin challenge of high energy prices and a need to decarbonize. Across industry, over 90 percent of business leaders believe that rising energy costs threaten their business’s ability to compete, according to an ABB survey from March 2023. The data also reveals that businesses expect lower profitability and plan to cut investment in essential areas such as research, people, marketing, and infrastructure. Concerningly, the research also found that energy prices may impact Net Zero targets – ۵۸ percent of businesses say they may have to move their goals back by as much as five years.
