Metsä Board starts change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, will initiate change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs for its paperboard and BCTMP mills in Finland. The negotiations involve a total of 1,100 employees at the Joutseno, Kaskinen, Kemi, Kyro, Tampere, Simpele and Äänekoski mills.

The possible layoffs would last a maximum of 90 days and could be implemented in several installments by the end of this year.

DS Smith and E.ON unveil combined heat and power plant

DS Smith and energy provider E.ON unveiled a new state-of-the-art combined heat and power (CHP) plant at DS Smith’s paper mill in Kent, the largest mill for recycled papers in the UK. Work on the CHP plant began in 2019 with E.ON financing, building and operating the plant.

Packaging Corporation of America’s Q1 net sales down 7.5%

Packaging Corporation of America reported Q1 2023 net income of $۱۹۰ million, or $۲.۱۱ per share, and net income of $۱۹۸ million, or $۲.۲۰ per share, excluding special items. Q1 2023 net sales were $۲.۰ billion in 2023 and $۲.۱ billion in 2022.

In the Packaging segment, total corrugated products shipments and shipments per day were down 12.7% compared to the Q1 2022. Containerboard production was 1,086,000 tons, and containerboard inventory was down 36,000 tons from the Q1 2022 and up 6,000 tons compared to the Q4 2022. In the Paper segment, sales volume was down 23,000 tons from the Q1 2022 and down 6,000 tons compared to the Q4 2022.

Norske Skog Bruck begins commercial deliveries of containerboard

Norske Skog Bruck announces successful commercial orders of the containerboard grades Testliner 3 and Fluting. This represents the introduction of 210,000 tonnes of competitive containerboard capacity to meet the growing demand for renewable and re-usable packaging. The production is based 100% on recycled fibre and will use steam from the waste-to-energy plant, which opened in April 2022.

Norske Skog Bruck is now ramping up production and expects full utilisation of 95% in the second half of 2025. The successful commercial orders of Strato Testliner 3 and Fluting mark a new era for Norske Skog and strengthen the company’s asset base and cash flow generation for decades ahead.

International Paper recommends shareholders reject mini-tender offer

International Paper announced that it has received notice of an unsolicited mini-tender offer by TRC Capital Investment Corporation to purchase up to 3,000,000 shares of International Paper Company common stock from International Paper shareholders. The offer represents approximately 0.86 % of International Paper’s shares of common stock outstanding as of the May 9, 2023 offer date. TRC Capital’s offer price of $30.67 per share is approximately 4.51% lower than the $32.12 closing price of International Paper common stock on the NYSE on May 9, 2023.

Clearwater Paper announces SBTi validation for climate targets

Clearwater Paper Corporation recently announced that the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) has validated the company’s climate targets. These targets include reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 29.1 percent and absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 25 percent by 2030. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. SBTi is focused on accelerating companies worldwide to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

Mondi Announces Modernization Program at Its Dynäs Kraft Paper Mill in Sweden

Mondi announced an upgrade program for its Dynäs pulp and paper mill in Sweden, which will increase efficiency and further improve the overall environmental performance of the mill.

The Dynäs mill produces high-quality sack and specialty kraft papers, used for a variety of paper-based packaging solutions for industrial and consumer industries, and is an important part of Mondi’s Flexible Packaging business.

Supremex Acquires Graf-Pak in Quebec, Canada

Supremex on May 8 announced the acquisition of the assets of Graf-Pak Inc., a provider of folding carton packaging solutions to a variety of commercial markets. The transaction was concluded for a total consideration of approximately $6.0 million, on a cash-free and debt-free basis, subject to customary adjustments, financed through the company’s existing credit facility.

Founded in 1995 and employing close to 25 people, Graf-Pak operates a facility located in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, near Supremex’s primary folding carton plant in Lachine.

Successful start-up of Cascades containerboard packaging plant

Cascades inc. announces that it has produced its first roll of 100% recycled containerboard at its Bear Island, Virginia mill.

With annual production capacity of 465,000 short tons of lightweight, high-quality, 100% recycled containerboard, the state-of-the-art mill is equipped to perform within the top quartile of its industry, and will strengthen the operational flexibility, geographic footprint, and competitiveness of Cascades’ Containerboard platform. The project created 700 jobs in the region during the construction phase, and 180 permanent jobs with the onset of commercial production.

New refiner innovation successfully in operation at Dongguan Jianhui, China

Dongguan Jianhui Paper Co., Ltd. has successfully started up a new mechanical pulping line from Andritz including the world’s first TwinFlo Prime refiner.

The newly developed TwinFlo Prime optimizes the pulp flow to each refining zone thanks to improved refining gap adjustment. This reduces wear on the refiner plates and thus results in longer plate lifetime and lower maintenance cost.
