Silbo upgrades all its pallet wrapping to paper with Mondi

Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has collaborated with Silbo to upgrade its pallet wrapping from plastic stretch film to Mondi’s kraft paper Advantage StretchWrap. Silbo has installed the first EW Technology PaperWrap machine at its plant in Zory, Poland and provides more sustainable flexible packaging for its broad range of customers, including those supplying fruits and vegetables.

Mactac Acquires Canadian Roll Label Distributor, Label Supply

Mactac is acquiring Label Supply, headquartered in Ontario, Canada. Label Supply has been servicing the Canadian roll label market for more than three decades.

The acquisition is expected to close June 1, 2023, and consists of an established, turnkey facility with 11 finishing assets, a comprehensive transportation/shipping fleet, robust laboratory and technical resource group, and an in-house ink partner. Russia increases 51.3% newsprint supplies to China in 1Q 2023

The first quarter of 2023 has seen a year-on-year decrease of 4.5% in China’s newsprint imports, which totalled 103.1 thousand tons. The value of these imports has fallen by 18.4%, settling at $57.1 million. This contraction correlates with the average price of newsprint, which also witnessed a 14.5% decrease to $554.1 per ton.

Brazil’s Production and Export of Pulp Increased in Q1 2023, China Remains Top Destination

According to the Brazilian Tree Industry (Ibá), Brazil’s pulp production for the first quarter of 2023 increased by 2.6%, while the volume of exports grew by 12.9% compared to the same period in 2022.

In monetary values, the sector brought foreign exchange to the country that totaled US$ 2.9 billion between January and March (+17.3%). This result favored the trade balance of the sector, which totaled US$ 2.6 billion (+16.5%).

Performance Biofilaments Starts Commercial Production of Nanofibrillated Cellulose

Performance BioFilaments announced the start-up of the world’s largest nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) commercial production plant at Resolute Forest Products’ Kenogami paper mill in Quebec, Canada.

Nanofibrillated cellulose is a natural, renewable and sustainable biomaterial derived from well-managed, certified forests. It provides a low carbon additive to enhance performance-driven advanced materials and specialty chemicals.

US printing-writing paper shipments down 25 per cent in April

Total U.S. printing-writing paper shipments decreased 25% in April 2023 compared to April 2022. U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers decreased 21% in April compared to the same month last year. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels decreased 1% when compared to March 2023, according to the American Forest & Paper Association.

Metsä Board starts change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs

Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, will initiate change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs for its paperboard and BCTMP mills in Finland. The negotiations involve a total of 1,100 employees at the Joutseno, Kaskinen, Kemi, Kyro, Tampere, Simpele and Äänekoski mills.

The possible layoffs would last a maximum of 90 days and could be implemented in several installments by the end of this year.

Emtec Electronic to attend INPAP Conference in Poland

The Leipzig-based manufacturer of testing equipment for the pulp, paper, tissue and board in-dustry will present solutions to automate quality control and improve product quality from June 12-14 at the XV Scientific and Technical Conference and Exhibition INPAP 2023 in Lodz.

The INPAP Conference, hosted by the Centre of Papermaking and Printing at Lodz University of Technology, brings together industry professionals to present scien-tific research regarding new developments in the manufacture of pulp, paper, tissue and board. Emtec Electronic will be attending the event as an exhibitor to present its array of testing solu-tions, including devices for measuring the surface charge (zeta potential) and assessing the min-eral filler content of paper and board. Additionally, Mr. Ulli Kasten will talk during the conference about the softness measurement of hygienic papers and explains the possibilities that raise for the users.
