UPM can start temporary layoffs at mills in Finland

UPM confirmed that UPM Pulp, UPM Timber, UPM Biofuels and the Lappeenranta biorefinery can implement a total of 90 days from 1 January to 30 June this year.  In the Communication Papers division, layoffs can be implemented from 1 March to 31 August. This applies to all for UPM’s pulp mills, sawmills and printing and writing paper mills in Finland. Temporary layoffs can be imposed individually and at intervals.

Wepa Professional acquires Star Tissue UK

Star Tissue, one of the UK’s leading independent manufacturers of hygiene paper products, has 130 employees and runs three fully-automated production lines with a total converting capacity of 27,000 tpy at the Blackburn plant. Stora Enso to negotiate temporary layoffs at Anjalankoski mills in Finland

Stora Enso is going to enter into negotiations on possible temporary layoffs at the Anjalankoski mills industrial complex in southern Finland. The statutory negotations cover a layoff period of a maximum of 90 days in 2024 and involve the entire staff of the Anjalankoski mills. The talks will start on 15 January and are estimated to last two weeks.

UPM finalized the sale of its Steyrermühl site to Heinzel Group

UPM has completed the sale of Steyrermühl site and all related assets to Heinzel Group, thereby closing the transaction announced in June 2022.

UPM Steyrermühl was founded in 1868 and produced newsprint paper until the end of Q2 2023. Production capacity during the last years was 320,000 tonnes annually. The site also includes a sawmill with an annual timber capacity of 370,000 cubic meters.

Fibre Excellence leases Chapelle Darblay site

Fibre Excellence announced that it has leased the site from Veolia and will take over operational management. The lease runs until the end of 2024 and it has also been agreed that Veolia will initially supply the plant, which is to be converted into a recycled corrugated case material mill, with recovered paper for the next ten years.

Weyerhaeuser completes sale of initial carbon credit offering

Weyerhaeuser Company announced an agreement for the sale of nearly 32,000 forest carbon credits at $29 per credit. This agreement marks Weyerhaeuser’s first transaction in the voluntary carbon market and represents the sale of all credits issued by ACR for the first year of the company’s Kibby Skinner Improved Forest Management (IFM) Project in Maine. Weyerhaeuser will immediately retire these credits on behalf of the buyer.

 

“We are pleased to be delivering our first forest carbon credits from our Maine project,” says Russell Hagen, senior vice president and chief development officer for Weyerhaeuser. “This initial sale is an important milestone for Weyerhaeuser and demonstrates our commitment to offering only the highest-quality credits to the market.”

AV Terrace Bay announces temporary idling of operations

AV Terrace Bay announced the temporary idling of its pulp operations in Terrace Bay, Ontario, Canada, with immediate effect.

The company said idling of the mill is “due to prevailing market conditions” and “will affect approximately four hundred employees.”

The pulp mill is located on the north shore of Lake Superior and produces 320,000 Air Dry Metric Tons of Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK) pulp.

The mill will be put into a state of warm idle to facilitate a possible future restart, AV Terrace Bay said.

The Terrace Bay mill is part of Grasim Industries Ltd, an Aditya Birla Group company.

The ecological transformation project of the Grand-Couronne paper manufacturing site in France, formerly Chapelle-Darblay, has reached a new stage in its implementation with the takeover of the operational management of the site by Fiber Excellence.

Veolia, a major partner in the project, is committed to ensuring the supply of recycled paper and cardboard for the stationery industry, in a dynamic local and circular economy.

Since acquiring the site from the Rouen Normandy Metropolis in May 2022, Veolia has been keen to take over to make possible the project to strategically reposition the newsprint factory into a cardboard production site.

The Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC) has promoted Emily Leonczyk to Executive Director and Vice President. A servant leader with a strong business and nonprofit association management career — including

five years in the paperboard industry — Leonczyk will oversee PPC’s operations while facilitating stakeholder collaboration and driving strategic initiatives.

Leonczyk has served PPC since 2018, first as Director of Marketing and Communications followed by a promotion to Director of Operations. Notably, her role in overseeing the 2018 rebrand of PPC underscores her contribution to shaping a modern-day vision for the organization.

Leonczyk was also crucial in guiding PPC through the COVID-19 pandemic, including the successful transition to virtual events and the subsequential resurgence of in-person engagement to pre-COVID numbers.
