UPM confirmed that UPM Pulp, UPM Timber, UPM Biofuels and the Lappeenranta biorefinery can implement a total of 90 days from 1 January to 30 June this year.  In the Communication Papers division, layoffs can be implemented from 1 March to 31 August. This applies to all for UPM’s pulp mills, sawmills and printing and writing paper mills in Finland. Temporary layoffs can be imposed individually and at intervals.

Star Tissue, one of the UK’s leading independent manufacturers of hygiene paper products, has 130 employees and runs three fully-automated production lines with a total converting capacity of 27,000 tpy at the Blackburn plant. Yesterday, the group informed the representatives of the trade unions that it would initiate the procedure to wind up production activities at the Villa Santa Lucia plant with the consequent dismissal of 163 employees.

Stora Enso is going to enter into negotiations on possible temporary layoffs at the Anjalankoski mills industrial complex in southern Finland. The statutory negotations cover a layoff period of a maximum of 90 days in 2024 and involve the entire staff of the Anjalankoski mills. The talks will start on 15 January and are estimated to last two weeks.

“This is an important acquisition, allowing us to immediately meet the growing demand, which saw a significant upturn in 2023. We are acquiring a technologically advanced plant that further improves our geographic coverage and creates the conditions to strengthen and sustain growth in our main market,” said Luigi Lazzareschi, CEO of Sofidel.

The paper manufacturing group, best known in Italy and Europe for its Regina brand, has acquired from ST Paper a paper mill in Duluth, in Minnesota, in the Upper Midwest.

The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) has completed its acquisition of a 23% stake in paper products company Mepco, according to Global Gypsum. TradeArabia News has reported that the PIF aims to enable Mepco to expand production, increase efficiency and become more sustainable.

UPM has completed the sale of Steyrermühl site and all related assets to Heinzel Group, thereby closing the transaction announced in June 2022.

UPM Steyrermühl was founded in 1868 and produced newsprint paper until the end of Q2 2023. Production capacity during the last years was 320,000 tonnes annually. The site also includes a sawmill with an annual timber capacity of 370,000 cubic meters.

The company announced that it had concluded talks with employee representatives at the mill on the decision to permanently idle the machine

Fibre Excellence announced that it has leased the site from Veolia and will take over operational management. The lease runs until the end of 2024 and it has also been agreed that Veolia will initially supply the plant, which is to be converted into a recycled corrugated case material mill, with recovered paper for the next ten years.

Kyoto Group announces that it has signed a term sheet for delivering a Heatcube to one of Germany’s major paper and packaging manufacturers—Klingele. The designated site for installing a first Heatcube is at Klingele’s facility in Werne, a corrugated board plant in Germany.
