Billerud’s Q1 net sales increased by 55%

Billerud’s net sales for the Q1 2023 grew by 55% to SEK 11,495 million ($1.1 billion), compared to SEK 7,397 million ($721 million) in Q1 2022. Net sales excluding currency effects increased by 51%, mainly due to the acquisition of Verso, which was completed on 31 March 2022. Billerud North America (former Verso) had net sales of SEK 3,311 million ($332 million) and sales volumes of 235 ktonnes. The total sales volume for the Group in the Q1 was 943 ktonnes, negatively impacted by a softer demand and inventory adjustments by customers. The organic and currency neutral net sales growth for the Group was 6%.

Transatlantic trade lane experiences significant fall in rates, still higher than pre-pandemic levels

The transatlantic trade lane experienced its most significant fall in rates this month since May of last year. However, unlike on fronthaul trades out of the Far East, rates from North Europe to the US East Coast are still considerably higher than their pre-pandemic levels, according to Norway-based transport data firm Xeneta. As of April 24th, spot rates had fallen to $3,090 per FEU, with long-term contracts now at $4,750 per FEU.

Rottneros to cut 24 jobs at Vallvik pulp mill in Sweden

Kamps, Inc. announces the opening of a new pallet facility in San Antonio, Texas. The facility will begin operations immediately. Services provided out of the San Antonio facility include wooden pallet recycling and custom pallet manufacturing, two of Kamps’ core competencies. The latest expansion comes on the heels of strong first quarter growth for the company, and is the seventh facility Kamps has added to its national network in the last three months.

The new location consists of two cross dock buildings, featuring 60 docks, and totals over eight acres. The facilities are outfitted for product storage, repair stations, and state-of-the-art operations equipment. The company plans an initial hire of 40 employees, and currently has 75 trailers available to service the local customer base. With these capabilities, Kamps plans to recycle, repair, and manufacture over 50,000 pallets per month. The new location will allow Kamps to push further south and provide increased local support for its national and regional customer base. The San Antonio location will also serve an important supporting role within Kamps’ overall Texas footprint, providing vital support for the three existing locations in Fort Worth and Dallas.

Stora Enso completes the divestment of its Hylte paper site

Stora Enso has completed the divestment of its paper production site in Hylte, Sweden announced on 27 January 2023, and all related assets to Sweden Timber, a Sweden-based sawmill and planing mill company. The enterprise value of the transaction is approximately EUR 18 million and will result in the reduction of Stora Enso’s annual newsprint paper capacity by 245,000 tonnes. Using 2022 figures as a benchmark, the divestment is expected to reduce Stora Enso’s annual sales by approximately EUR 160 million.

New refiner innovation successfully in operation at Dongguan Jianhui, China

Dongguan Jianhui Paper Co., Ltd. has successfully started up a new mechanical pulping line from Andritz including the world’s first TwinFlo Prime refiner.

The newly developed TwinFlo Prime optimizes the pulp flow to each refining zone thanks to improved refining gap adjustment. This reduces wear on the refiner plates and thus results in longer plate lifetime and lower maintenance cost.
