Canfor to permanently close Chetwynd facility and curtail Houston sawmill in British Columbia

Canfor Corporation is restructuring its British Columbia (B.C.) operations by permanently closing its Chetwynd sawmill and pellet plant and temporarily closing its Houston sawmill for an extended period to facilitate a major redevelopment on the site. Both facilities will be closed following an orderly wind-down of operations that is expected to conclude early in Q2 2023 and will remove approximately 750 million board feet of annual production capacity.

Norske Skog Skogn invests NOK 180 million ($18.2 million) in new pulp production line

Norske Skog Skogn will invest around NOK 180 million ($18.2 million), after NOK 40-50 million ($4-5 million) in grant funding from the NOx fund, in a new thermomechanical production line (TMP) that will replace expensive recycled paper with fresh fiber. The new TMP line will reduce variable costs, significantly reduce NOx and fossil CO2 emissions, and reduce landfilled waste. Start-up is expected in the first half of 2024.

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) has released its Q4 2022 U.S. Boxboard report. According to the report, total boxboard production in Q4 decreased 3% compared to Q4 2021, but 2022 production was up 1% when compared to the same 12 months of 2021.

Stora Enso to Sell Hylte Newsprint Mill to Sweden Timber for EUR 18 Million

Stora Enso has signed an agreement to divest its paper mill in Hylte, Sweden and all its related assets to Sweden Timber, a Sweden-based sawmill and planing mill company. The enterprise value is approximately EUR 18 million.

The Hylte Mill in southwest Sweden is one of the largest newsprint mills in the world, and has the capacity to produce 245,000 tonnes of high-quality newsprint per year, along with biocomposites and formed fibre products.

Weyerhaeuser Company reported Q4 2022 net earnings of $11 million, or 2 cents per diluted share, on net sales of $1.8 billion. In December 2022, the average price for the logs exported from New Zealand decreased 6% compared to the previous month at $97 per m3. This is 6% less than a year ago when it was $103.
The exports of logs from New Zealand increased 13% year-on-year to 1,672 thousand m3 in December.
