Metsà Spring invests in fossil-free insulation startup

Finnish startup Fiberwood, a producer of 100% ecological wood fiber insulation and packaging materials made from mechanical wood industry side streams, has raised a late seed funding round. The round was led by Metsä Group’s innovation company Metsä Spring, and the round included public financing from Business Finland. The funding will be used to develop and scale up the production capabilities of its pilot plant as it heads into industrial-level continuous production.

With this ruling, the court has confirmed the legality of the extraordinary concession extension granted to the Ence Pontevedra pulp mill, Ence says. On January 31st 2023, the Austrian Pfeifer Holding GmbH was able to successfully complete the acquisition of the largest private wood processing company in northern Finland, Pölkky Oy, by closing the transaction. After signing the contract at the end of December 2022, the competition authority has now given green light for the merger. It was agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

Russian production of wood-based panels falls to level of twelve years ago due to sanctions

In 2022, the production of particleboard and OSB in Russia decreased by 10.5%, to 10.3 million m3, and this of fibreboard and MDF declined by 12.1%, to 649 million m3. Plywood output fell by 28.8% to 3.24 million m3. The reason for the decline in the production of wood-based panels was the closure of the main export destinations due to European sanctions, as well as a drop in demand in the domestic market.

Nordic Paper receives permit to increase production at Bäckhammar mill in Sweden

The Land and Environment Court in Vänersborg has communicated its decision to grant a permit for increased production output at the Nordic Paper plant in Bäckhammar, Sweden. The new permit allows for Nordic Paper to, after investments, increase its production of paper pulp in Bäckhammar by more than 20% and of kraft papers by more than 10%. The company is now going to analyze the details of the permit in order to determine any impact on potential investment alternatives.

Stora Enso to sell Hylte paper site in Sweden and discontinue sale of Anjala mill in Finland

Stora Enso has signed an agreement to divest its paper production site in Hylte, Sweden and all its related assets to Sweden Timber, a Sweden-based sawmill and planing mill company. The enterprise value is approximately Euro 18 million. The completion of the transaction is expected in the first half of 2023. Concerning the Anjala paper site in Finland, Stora Enso has decided to discontinue the divestment process.
