Voith has acquired shares in the sustainability start-up Yangi®, headquartered in Varberg, Sweden. Both parties signed the purchase agreement in December 2022. Yangi’s ground-breaking technology emerges from 10 years of R&D within its sister company, The Loop Factory, which focuses on the megatrends of sustainability and circular economy. As a result, the leading full-line supplier Voith is investing in new, future-oriented technologies to further drive decarbonization in the paper industry.

Voith to convert Stora Enso’s former paper machine into board machine at Oulu site in Finland

The machine at the northern Finnish site in Oulu previously produced coated graphic papers. After the successful conversion, the machine will produce high-quality folding boxboard and coated kraft back (CKB).

Finnish startup Fiberwood, a producer of 100% ecological wood fiber insulation and packaging materials made from mechanical wood industry side streams, has raised a late seed funding round. The round was led by Metsä Group’s innovation company Metsä Spring, and the round included public financing from Business Finland. The Supreme Court of Spain has uphold Ence’s appeal against a previous decision of the National High Court. With this ruling, the court has confirmed the legality of the extraordinary concession extension granted to the Ence Pontevedra pulp mill, Ence says. Under the concession, the company is allowed to operate at the current site until the year 2073.

After signing the contract at the end of December 2022, the competition authority has now given green light for the merger. It was agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

Russian production of wood-based panels falls to level of twelve years ago due to sanctions

In 2022, the production of particleboard and OSB in Russia decreased by 10.5%, to 10.3 million m3, and this of fibreboard and MDF declined by 12.1%, to 649 million m3. Plywood output fell by 28.8% to 3.24 million m3. The reason for the decline in the production of wood-based panels was the closure of the main export destinations due to European sanctions, as well as a drop in demand in the domestic market.
