Domtar today announced that it has entered into an agreement with First Quality Enterprises whereby First Quality will acquire Domtar’s Dryden pulp mill in Northwestern Ontario, Canada.

The purchase price was not disclosed.

Innovative Andritz partner Rohrdorfer has started up Germany’s first amine-based CO2 capture plant for cement plants at its main site in Upper Bavaria. This technology developed by Andritz will prospectively make a considerable contribution to CO2 reduction and thus to a sustainable circular economy. The special separation process recovers CO2 as a basic material for a large number of valuable intermediate products for further use in hygiene and pharmaceutical products as well as in the beverage and food industries.

Rottneros and Arctic Paper establish JV to produce molded fiber trays in Poland

Rottneros takes the next step for the agreed joint venture project in Packaging in Poland by formally founding the 50/50-owned company together with Arctic Paper. The aim of the company is to build and run the factory to produce molded fiber trays on a large industrial scale. The project is on schedule and the factory is expected to begin operations at the end of 2023.

The lime kiln and gas treatment system will have a production capacity of 120 tonnes of lime per day and will provide significant environmental benefits. The new circular system will allow the calcium carbonate waste that is currently generated in the mill’s manufacturing process to be transformed into lime and subsequently reintroduced into the production process as a raw material.

Domtar sells Dryden pulp mill to First Quality Enterprises

Domtar Corporation, a part of the Paper Excellence Group, and First Quality Enterprises, Inc. announced that they have entered into an agreement to sell Domtar’s Dryden pulp mill to First Quality. The Dryden transaction, expected to close early in the Q3, is subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of required regulatory approvals and the closing of the Resolute Forest Products Inc. transaction. First Quality fully intends to continue business operations consistent with past practices.

Strikes at Finnish ports continue

The strikes in Finnish ports are still ongoing. At the latest round of mediation, which ended yesterday evening, the Finnish Transport Workers’ Union (AKT) and the port operators were unable to reach a settlement. The National Conciliator’s Office announced the end of the negotiation day on Twitter, adding that the conditions for a settlement proposal were not yet in place.

Bracell commissions 100% electric truck for pulp transport

Bracell starts the year 2023 with an innovative project: the use of an electric truck to transport pulp. The initiative is unprecedented in this type of operation with heavy vehicles (trucks weighing more than 40 tons) and it is estimated that the company will avoid the emission of 132,000 kg of CO2eq per year from a single truck. Stora Enso invests EUR 30 million in its Heinola mill

Stora Enso will invest approximately EUR 30 million in its Heinola Fluting site in Finland to renew the energy set-up and process equipment. After the investment, the site can replace also the remaining fossil-based fuels with renewable bioenergy. This will reduce the site’s greenhouse gas emissions with more than 90%.
