The Schumacher Packaging Group is launching Stackpack, a new type of top-seal tray for food. Stackpack is made of 100% solid board, is recyclable, and can completely replace conventional plastic trays.

Smurfit Kappa invests Euro 27 million in lime kiln and gas treatment system at paper mill in Spain

The lime kiln and gas treatment system will have a production capacity of 120 tonnes of lime per day and will provide significant environmental benefits. The new circular system will allow the calcium carbonate waste that is currently generated in the mill’s manufacturing process to be transformed into lime and subsequently reintroduced into the production process as a raw material.

Domtar sells Dryden pulp mill to First Quality Enterprises

Domtar Corporation, a part of the Paper Excellence Group, and First Quality Enterprises, Inc. announced that they have entered into an agreement to sell Domtar’s Dryden pulp mill to First Quality. The Dryden transaction, expected to close early in the Q3, is subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of required regulatory approvals and the closing of the Resolute Forest Products Inc. transaction. First Quality fully intends to continue business operations consistent with past practices.

Strikes at Finnish ports continue

The strikes in Finnish ports are still ongoing. At the latest round of mediation, which ended yesterday evening, the Finnish Transport Workers’ Union (AKT) and the port operators were unable to reach a settlement. The National Conciliator’s Office announced the end of the negotiation day on Twitter, adding that the conditions for a settlement proposal were not yet in place.

Bracell commissions 100% electric truck for pulp transport

Bracell starts the year 2023 with an innovative project: the use of an electric truck to transport pulp. The initiative is unprecedented in this type of operation with heavy vehicles (trucks weighing more than 40 tons) and it is estimated that the company will avoid the emission of 132,000 kg of CO2eq per year from a single truck. In this way, the company reinforces its commitment to sustainable development in all its operations, processes and activities and expands its actions aimed at sustainability also to the logistical stage of the production chain, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and the fight against changes in weather.

Stora Enso invests EUR 30 million in its Heinola mill

Stora Enso will invest approximately EUR 30 million in its Heinola Fluting site in Finland to renew the energy set-up and process equipment. After the investment, the site can replace also the remaining fossil-based fuels with renewable bioenergy. This will reduce the site’s greenhouse gas emissions with more than 90%.

the average price for lumber imported to the United Kingdom grew 10% compared to the previous month and amounted to $376 per m3. This is 34% less than a year ago when it was $565.

CEPI: To support the EU’s most sustainable industries, the ‘fine print’ in the CO2 market revision will be crucial

The EU carbon market forms the cornerstone of Europe’s plan to reduce its CO2 emissions by 55% until 2030, from a 1990 baseline. Final agreements on its mechanisms, published today, show that a number of ‘delegated acts’ will still be required to provide much-needed details. These delegated acts could take another two years before being published. For the EU’s industry, this spells uncertainty for achieving a highly increased target to cut 62% of its CO2 emissions by 2030.
