Hamburger Containerboard reaches social plan agreement at Pitten mill

Hamburger Containerboard, part of the Prinzhorn Group, has reached an early agreement with employee representatives on a social plan in connection with the shutdown of a paper machine at its Pitten mill in Austria.

The company confirmed to EUWID that a mutually satisfactory agreement had been achieved. Management stressed that the decision to cut jobs, affecting a total of 52 employees, had been a very difficult one.

Prinzhorn Group said it had initiated comprehensive measures to ease the impact on those affected and their families.

Initial voluntary programmes are already under way to support employees in their transition to new employment. In addition, a labour foundation – similar to a transfer company – will be set up on a voluntary basis to provide intensive support for rapid reintegration into the labour market as well as training and retraining opportunities.

The final social plan was adopted on Thursday 14 August.

Only at the end of July had the company informed staff at a works meeting about the need to reduce capacity in the field of corrugating medium and case-making papers, a step which also had implications for the workforce.
