Earthquakes cause production stoppages at Turkish paper mills

The dramatic earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria on 6 February and claimed tens of thousands of victims is also having an impact on the Turkish paper industry. In Kahramanmaras, the epicentre of these earthquakes, Kipas Kagit and KMK Paper do each operate one paper mill. Both sites are now standing still.

CELAB-Europe launches new web hub for liner recyclers

CELAB-Europe, a collaboration of the whole self-adhesive label value chain, has announced the launch of their new website that includes an interactive map that lists liner and matrix recyclers in Europe. Next to brand owners and other label users in general, especially waste managers and HSEQ representatives of production sites are the target audience for the recycling information.

Imports of lumber to United Kingdom expand 32% in December

In December 2022, the imports of lumber to the United Kingdom grew 32% year-on-year to 395.9 thousand m3.
the average price for lumber imported to the United Kingdom grew 10% compared to the previous month and amounted to $376 per m3. This is 34% less than a year ago when it was $565.

CEPI: To support the EU’s most sustainable industries, the ‘fine print’ in the CO2 market revision will be crucial

The EU carbon market forms the cornerstone of Europe’s plan to reduce its CO2 emissions by 55% until 2030, from a 1990 baseline. Final agreements on its mechanisms, published today, show that a number of ‘delegated acts’ will still be required to provide much-needed details. These delegated acts could take another two years before being published. For the EU’s industry, this spells uncertainty for achieving a highly increased target to cut 62% of its CO2 emissions by 2030.

Smurfit Kappa embraces green energy at Spanish paper mill

Smurfit Kappa has announced a €۶ million investment at its Sanguesa paper mill in Spain, which will see the construction and installation of up to 12,000 solar panels on land adjacent to the mill. The solar panels will reduce CO2 emissions by over 3200 tonnes annually and provide significant cost savings.

Södra appoints Magnus Örnberg as new CFO

Magnus Örnberg has been recruited as the new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Södra. He has extensive experience in all areas of finance and most recently served as CFO of SAS.

Magnus Örnberg will take office on 1 May and become a member Södra’s Group Senior Management. Sara Cronholm will continue serving as Södra’s Interim CFO until then.

Metsä Tissue to invest Euro 370 million in Mariestad mill in Sweden

Metsä Group, through its tissue business Metsä Tissue, has made a decision to modernize and expand the Mariestad tissue paper mill in Sweden. The investment will increase the availability of locally and sustainably produced tissue products in the Scandinavian market, in which approximately 40% of tissue usage is currently imported. The value of the investment is Euro 370 million and it is one of the largest in the tissue business in Europe and the largest within Metsä Tissue. The construction works will start during spring 2023 and the renewed mill is planned to be operational in the second half of 2025.

Lumin to invest $136 million in new plywood mill in Uruguay

Lumin, a leading timberland, and forest products company, will invest approx. US$ 136 million to build its third industrial plant in Uruguay, which is expected to create more than 300 jobs and significantly increase the country’s sustainable plywood production. Following approval by Lumin’s Board of Directors, which includes representatives of the BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group (TIG) and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI), construction of the new plant will begin in the Q1 2023, with operations expected to commence the Q1 2026.
